Britney Spears has entered a treatment facility following her DUI arrest last month.

A rep for the pop star confirmed to PEOPLE on Sunday, April 12, that Spears, 44, voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility.

Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI) in Ventura, Calif., on March 4. She was released the next day, and a rep for the singer told PEOPLE in a statement that the “unfortunate incident” was “completely inexcusable.”

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” the statement read. “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

Spears shares sons Sean Preston and Jayden James with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

The arrest marked yet another setback for Spears, whose erratic social media presence has drawn concern from fans in the wake of her conservatorship ending in 2021. In October 2025, Federline, 48, expressed urgent worry for the pop star in his memoir You Thought You Knew, writing that he felt it was “time to sound the alarm” on her behavior.

“It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour,” he wrote. “Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”

A representative for Spears responded to the claims made in Federline’s book in a statement shared with PEOPLE, writing that her children and their “well-being during this sensationalism” are “all she cares about.”

Spears was previously placed under two psychiatric holds — which police, social workers and other mental health professionals have the authority to use if a person is considered a danger to themselves or others — weeks apart in January 2008.

The first hold came after Spears locked herself in Federline’s bathroom with the couple’s son Jayden, who at the time was just over a year old. The incident in part led to Federline eventually being awarded sole custody of the boys.

Spears recounted the night in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, writing that she “didn’t want anyone taking [her] baby,” and was “feeling desperate to keep my own children for a few more hours.”

Elsewhere in her memoir, Spears wrote about her experience under her conservatorship, which was terminated by a judge in 2021.

“This is what’s hard to explain, how quickly I could vacillate between being a little girl and being a teenager and being a woman, because of the way they had robbed me of my freedom,” she wrote. “The woman in me was pushed down for a long time.”

The “Piece of Me” singer has also been candid about her health, and opened up about being on the “right medication” on Nov. 29, 2021. She’s also said she “still needs lots of healing.”

In August 2022, Spears posted a 22-minute video to YouTube and Twitter that candidly reflected on the “trauma” of allegedly being forced to work and spend time in a mental health facility under the thumb of her father, and also accused her mother and sister of enabling the controlling aspects of the conservatorship. They have denied wrongdoing.

“I was scared, broken, [and] I’m sharing this because I want people to know I’m only human,” Spears said in the video, which was posted via an unlisted link and later deleted. “I do feel victimized after these experiences and how can I mend this if I don’t talk about it?”
