Nick Reiner, who didn’t enter a plea Wednesday, faces murder charges after, authorities say, he killed his parents at their Los Angeles home over the weekend.
Two of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s children asked for “respect and privacy” Wednesday after their brother appeared in a Los Angeles courthouse in connection with their parents’ murders.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” Jake and Romy Reiner said in the statement.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” the statement added.
Rob Reiner, 78, the legendary actor and filmmaker, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found fatally stabbed in the master bedroom of their Los Angeles home Sunday, authorities said.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, authorities found their son Nick Reiner, 32, in University Park and took him into custody, authorities said.
Nick Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with his parents’ deaths, with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, as well as using a deadly weapon — a knife. He did not enter a plea during a brief court hearing in Los Angeles, and his arraignment has been pushed back to Jan. 7.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” Jake and Romy Reiner added in the statement Wednesday. “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
Nick Reiner’s defense lawyer, Alan Jackson, said Tuesday that Reiner was not medically cleared in time for his initial hearing that day but did provide further details.
Jackson told reporters outside court Wednesday that there are “very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case.”
“We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward … not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves and that the family deserves,” he added.

Close friends of Rob and Michele Reiner release statement on their lives and work
The full statement about the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner by several of their close friends.
The statement was released Tuesday to The Associated Press.
It is signed by Billy and Janice Crystal, Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry and Diana Levinson and Ambassador James Costos and Michael Smith.
Here is the statement in full:

“Going to the movies in a dark theater filled with strangers having a common experience, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, or watching an intense drama unfold is still an unforgettable thrill. Tell us a story audiences demand of us. Absorbing all he had learned from his father Carl and his mentor Norman Lear, Rob Reiner not only was a great comic actor, he became a master story teller. There is no other director who has his range. From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentary he was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant. For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.
“Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better and with his loving wife Michele, he had the perfect partner. Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens… They were a special force together-dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.
“There is a line from one of Rob’s favorite films, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ ‘Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?’ You have no idea.”

Rob and Michele Reiner’s Children, Romy and Jake Reiner, Break Silence After Their Parents’ Deaths
Romy and Jake Reiner are speaking out after their brother, Nick, was charged with killing their parents.
Romy and Jake Reiner have issued a public statement about the grisly deaths of their parents, late Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner.
The couple were found slain Dec. 14 in their Los Angeles home, police said Dec. 16. They had been fatally stabbed in the early morning hours, according to the district attorney’s office.
The couple’s son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and charged Dec. 16 with killing his parents.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” Romy and Jake Reiner said in a joint statement Dec. 17. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life.
“We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave,” their statement concluded.
Rob Reiner, 78, who was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, shot to his own stardom in the 1970s playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the sitcom “All in the Family.” He went on to become one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, helming “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” When Harry Met Sally,” “Misery” and “A Few Good Men,” among others.
He also collaborated with Nick Reiner on a semi-autobiographical movie, “Being Charlie,” released in 2016, about a troubled young man who struggles with recovery from substance abuse.
Nick Reiner reportedly struggled with addiction and had been in and out of rehab since he was a teenager, NBC News reported.

On Dec. 13, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, where the younger Reiner was reportedly disruptive, two people familiar with the matter told NBC News.
Nick Reiner was charged Dec. 16 with two counts of first degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.
Nick Reiner appeared Dec. 17 in a Los Angeles courtroom where a judge decided to push his arraignment back until Jan. 7, marking the second time it was delayed since his Dec. 14 arrest. His arraignment was initially postponed on Dec. 16 because he was not medically cleared in time for the hearing, according to his lawyer, Alan Jackson.
If convicted of his parents’ murders, Nick Reiner faces a maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, officials said Dec. 16.
Rob Reiner’s oldest child, Tracy Reiner, whom he shared with his late ex-wife, actor and director Penny Marshall, reacted with horror to the deaths of her father and his wife.
“I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know what to say, I’m in shock.”
