Prince Harry ‘Lacks Basic Awareness’ With Money; Meghan Markle Realizes They Need To Be ‘Careful’ — Insider

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing a possible cash crunch in the near future. As their lavish lifestyle spirals out of control, their expenses seem to be outpacing their income.

After a string of failed Hollywood deals reduced the ex-royals’ cashflow to a trickle, they could soon be in real financial straits.

Unfortunately, the couple’s Montecito mansion is a major money drain. They’re believed to have taken out multiple mortgages to pay for the $14 million home in 2020.

“They should have bought a $7 million house free and clear,” a source told Celebrity Intelligence newsletter. At the time they bought the home, reports claimed they put down $5 million, with the remaining $9.5 in a mortgage.

In addition, the couple’s extreme security demands are also draining their resources. An insider reported that their bodyguards cost $3 million a year. They have four security personnel at home and add another three when they travel.

In an effort to economize, the Sussexes have slashed their staff of 16 full-time employees to only five between their home and their Archewell business. The remaining staff includes a chief of staff, two TV execs, a UK press rep and a U.S. PR agency.

After losing their moneymaking deals with Netflix and Spotify, a source shared that Meghan “has a sense of how careful they need to be” with their money. But Harry, who was raised amid the royal family’s massive wealth “lacks basic awareness of what things cost.”

Meanwhile, the millions of dollars Harry received from his late motherPrincess Diana, his grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his great grandmother are dwindling. With no reliable income on the horizon, the Sussexes are bracing themselves for a stark reality.

“Five years, roughly,” a source predicted. “That’s the window before their lifestyle looks a lot different.”

Sussexes Are Fired! How Harry and Meghan Are Now Totally Exiled From Hollywood And Frozen Out of Netflix

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been exiled from Hollywood amid their Netflix fallout.MEGA

Less than two weeks after the Duchess of Sussex and Netflix announced they were ending their year-long partnership with her As Ever lifestyle brand, which both claimed was always the plan, Meghan Markle unveiled her first product drop as she goes it alone, RadarOnline.com can reveal.

On March 18, the 44-year-old released a Bloom Box collaboration with luxury floral company High Camp Supply featuring fresh gardenias, white peonies, mint and jasmine alongside her As Ever peppermint tea and sage honey, a package designed to “bring the feeling of the garden inside.”

Honeymoon’s Over

But while Meghan Markle is forging ahead on her own, a very different narrative is emerging. Her latest launch came just hours after Variety, a respected Hollywood trade publication, released a blistering March 17 report packed with bombshell claims Markle and husband Prince Harry‘s overall deal with Netflix deal is under strain.

The story also detailed mounting frustrations aimed at Meghan and Harry behind the scenes, suggesting their entertainment empire ambitions may have hit a wall amid whispers the magic around the couple has started to fade.

They were once expected to be major players after signing a reported $100 million contract with the streamer in 2020, which the outlet later revealed was worth closer to $60 million.

Those hopes flourished after the success of their 2022 docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which chronicled their decision to leave Britain’s royal family amid U.K. media attacks they said were fueled by Harry’s family.

But since then, their other projects, including the 41-year-old Duke of Sussex’s Polo docuseries and the former Suits star’s cooking and entertaining show, With Love, Meghan – which debuted in the Top 10 a year ago before a subsequent season and holiday special saw a massive ratings drop – have failed to deliver the viewership the streamer expected.

Last summer, five years in, their agreement was downgraded to a first-look deal. As one Netflix insider told Variety, “The mood in the building is ‘We’re done.'”

Sarandos Frustration Claims Spark Netflix Denial

Multiple insiders further told the mag that Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos – who socializes with the Sussexes, his neighbors in posh Montecito, Calif. – has grown frustrated with the couple and recently said he wouldn’t take the duchess’ call without an attorney present, though it was unclear whether he was joking.

Either way, the response was swift: A Netflix spokesperson called the claim “absolutely inaccurate,” while Markle’s lawyer, Michael J. Kump, in a letter to Variety, termed the allegation “blatantly false,” adding that “Meghan texts and speaks with Mr. Sarandos regularly, and has been to his home, sans lawyers.”

At a March 18 Next on Netflix event, chief content officer Bela Bajaria also pushed back on the report, saying, “Don’t believe whatever you read,” reiterating that Netflix still has an ongoing relationship with the Sussexes, with “things in development on the TV and film side,” including two book-to-film projects.

Ruffling Feathers

There was also pushback against Variety‘s depiction of Markle’s behind-the-scenes style, including that she “tends to talk over or recast Prince Harry’s thoughts, sometimes while he is mid-sentence,” often “preceded by a touch to the arm or thigh.”

Harry quickly called the claim “categorically false,” with Meghan’s lawyer accusing the mag of playing into “the misogynistic characterization of her bossing her husband around.”

The mag further alleged that the duchess sometimes “disappeared” from Zoom calls, citing sources who claimed: “Her absence was due to her being offended by something that was said.”

The former actress’ legal team insisted there’s a far simpler explanation: She’s juggling work from home with young children – Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4 – and, like many parents, sometimes has to briefly step away during meetings.

Also disputed by the streamer or the Sussexes: Variety‘s claims that Netflix was blindsided by the couple’s bombshell-filled March 2021 CBS interview – the one in which the couple revealed that someone in Harry’s family made racist comments about their future children and that the Princess of Wales made Markle cry before her 2018 wedding.

Plus, there was friction over a perception the couple was holding back information from their late-2022 docuseries so it could come out in Harry’s bestselling January 2023 memoir, Spare.

Netflix wouldn’t be the only company to change its mind about the Sussexes. In June 2023 – the same month Spotify announced it had ended its deal with the couple after they produced just a single season of Meghan’s Archetypes podcast – the company’s head of talk strategy, Bill Simmons, called them “fking grifters.”

He’d previously mocked them on a 2022 episode of his podcast: “You live in fking Montecito, and you just sell documentaries and podcasts, and nobody cares what you have to say about anything unless you talk about the royal family, and you just complain about them.”

Family Friction

At the same time, criticism from within royal circles is intensifying.

In his new bookBetrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, out March 26, author Tom Bower writes that Prince William, 43, and Princess Kate, 44, decided early on that Markle was “a divisive agent” and “a threat” to the royal family, alleging that the American divorcee was disappointed that she and Harry would never be king and queen.

In another passage, he claims Queen Camilla, 78, told a friend, “Meghan’s brainwashed Harry,” who he said was deeply changed by the relationship. “To please [Meghan], Harry was ignoring his old friends,” Bower writes, even “changing his telephone number without telling his family.”

The Sussexes again swiftly fired back, accusing Bower of having “long crossed the line from criticism into fixation” and dismissing his claims as “deranged conspiracy and melodrama.”

The timing couldn’t be worse. “It’s very difficult, if not obstructive, that Harry finds himself in this position at a time that he’s still desperately trying to build a bridge with his family” and continue efforts to reconnect with his cancer-stricken father, King Charles III, 77, the source explained.

“He could well do without the distracting drama… because he gets judged by association.”

Even so, Harry will always choose Markle.

“To him, Meghan’s his soul mate… he will always be indebted and in awe of her,” the source said, noting Harry’s focus remains on “being a dad, playing polo and promoting his philanthropy” – even as “all this noise… is painful and tiresome.”

Paying The Price

Markle, as usual, is brushing off the criticism and doubling down, the source said.

“She’s sticking up for herself and saying these are classic spite tactics from people who are trying to tear her down – in no small part because she’s a strong, ambitious woman,” explained the source.

“She’s way past the point of letting the scrutiny affect her. In her mind, it’s critical to keep her chin up and not allow haters to distract from her goals.”

She may be able to keep her eye on the prize, but that doesn’t mean the backlash isn’t growing. Following the release of Variety‘s report, Bower said he felt vindicated, telling the U.K.’s Daily Express on March 18 that he believes the Sussexes “are reaching the end of the road in Hollywood.”

Bower also suggested any attempt to regain their standing back in Britain – amid reports they’re eyeing a return this summer to mark the one-year kickoff to Harry’s next Invictus Games, set for Birmingham, England, in July 2027 – are doomed.

“Their behavior, lack of original talent and suffocating self-importance has made it even more important for them to return to Britain… and be revalidated as royals,” Bower said of their desire to claw back power.

“That option, I believe, will be denied to them. They face an increasingly tough future. That’s the price of betraying the royal family.”

Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Most Explosive Fight Yet – And How Their Kids are Caught in the Middle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's most explosive fight has caused a parenting rift.MEGA

The day was picture-perfect. On April 5, the Duchess of Sussex shared a sunny “Happy Easter” glimpse into life at the $14.65 million Montecito, Calif., estate she shares with husband Prince Harry – feeding chickens, collecting freshly laid eggs and watching their kids, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, race across the lush lawn on an Easter egg hunt.

In one scene, Lili, in bunny ears, clutched a stuffed rabbit as she traipsed down a garden path. In another, Archie focused intently on decorating an egg.

Trust Issues

But behind the carefully curated scenes, a far less idyllic reality is unfolding. With pressure mounting on every front – from their relationship to their careers to their children – insiders worry Harry, 41, and Meghan [Markle], 44, may be nearing a breaking point.

“People in their world are starting to have very real fears that the marriage will not survive,” a source told RadarOnline.com. “The tension is getting worse all the time.”

Scrutiny only intensified as the pair prepared to head to Australia in mid-April for a series of private, business and philanthropic engagements – their first trip Down Under in more than seven years.

The scheduled visit was set to begin just two weeks after flirty private Facebook messages Harry exchanged with Mail on Sunday journalist Charlotte Griffiths were made public on March 31 as his unlawful information gathering court case against the outlet’s publisher, Associated Newspapers Limited (which has denied his claims), wound down in London.

While Griffiths playfully nicknamed the royal “Mr. Mischief” and praised their “fun weekend of naughtiness” in the countryside in the 2011 and 2012 exchanges, Harry – who claimed he cut off contact after learning she was a reporter – told her, “I WISH I was there sugar,” and “I[I] miss our movie snuggles,” even signing one message “Mwah xxx.”

Aside from being “embarrassing” for Harry and his wife, the revelations left Markle “humiliated” as she was “blindsided” by their release, said the source. “Naturally, she’s wondering what else he may have hidden from her. Truth is paramount to Markle, so him being dishonest or at best evasive about his past is hitting her hard.”

The couple has long fostered an “‘us against the world’ mantra that’s defined their marriage,” the source continued, but secrets being revealed “has given her cause to question that. It’s dramatically affected her level of trust.” (A rep for the couple denies the story.)

Some critics, however, think it’s Markle who can’t be trusted. “She’s less inclined to run things by him or pander to his sensitivities right now,” the source explained. “The way she’s handling the kids and showing them off on social media is a prime example of that.”

According to the source, Harry’s made his stance clear. “He does not want them paraded around or thrust into the spotlight and yet Meghan continues to totally defy his wishes.”

Some believe the shift is intentional, with speculation Meghan is pushing back in her own way by sharing more frequent peeks at the children – and more of their faces – despite years of keeping them out of view. That issue, says the source, is feeding a question that’s long haunted the couple: Is this an equal partnership?

“Meghan is very much the boss in the relationship. She controls almost every aspect of Harry’s life both personally and professionally,” said the source. “And the way she’s bulldozing ahead with putting the kids on social media is a prime example of Meghan doing what she wants, whether Harry likes it or not.”

He most definitely doesn’t. “It’s triggering. As a kid, he hated it when he and [brother Prince William] were forced to pose for photographers during their private moments,” said the source. “The fact that his own kids are now being trotted out by Meghan in a similar fashion is not OK with him, but ultimately, what can he do? This [is] how Meghan controls him.”

As Daily Beast royal editor Tom Sykes pointed out in his April 6 The Royalist column on Substack, the former Suits actress is increasingly incorporating her children into her public image.

Tom Sykes claimed Archie and Lilibet are becoming central to Markle's public image strategy.MEGA

They’ve become, he wrote: “A central plank of Meghan’s public myth building. Every new post featuring Archie or Lilibet deepens the sense that the Sussex children are being folded into a public brand architecture built on attention.”

Some observers have also noted the posts – particularly when tied to Meghan’s As Ever brand – echo the playbook of social media mom influencers, where family life becomes a product. That perception, said the source, is only fueling tensions behind closed doors. “Meghan has really changed in Harry’s eyes,” said the source.

“The Meghan he fell in love with had higher aspirations. He finds it pretty appalling that Meghan seems hell-bent on being this momfluencer character.”

Showbiz Setbacks

It’s all coming to a head. Just weeks before Meghan’s Easter post, a blistering March 17 report from Variety raised fresh questions about the couple’s standing in Hollywood, describing mounting frustrations behind the scenes at Netflix and suggesting their once-promising entertainment empire may be faltering.

Their initial deal – reportedly worth around $60million – was downgraded to a first-look arrangement last year, while the duchess’ With Love, Meghan series saw declining ratings after its initial success and now will only return as seasonal specials.

In early March, the streaming giant and Markle also ended their year-long partnership in her As Ever brand, though both sides insisted the move was planned. One insider quoted in the report claimed: “We’re done.”

Both Netflix and the couple’s camp have pushed back strongly, with reps and Markle’s lawyer calling the claims false and executives confirming the couple has multiple projects in development.

Back To Britain

Yet the perception of waning industry support has added yet another layer of pressure, making it feel as if “their living and working situations are rapidly becoming untenable,” said the source, with Meghan moving forward with her Hollywood ambitions and Harry leaning further into his beloved philanthropy.

“Harry doesn’t understand or enjoy the culture or mentality of Hollywood,” adds the source, and “he’s fed up” with the constant drama.

He’s also grappling with a very different pull – toward home. As RadarOnline.com has previously reported, the British army vet has been exploring ways to repair his relationship with his cancer-stricken father, King Charles III, 77, and in recent months learned he could soon regain government-funded security in the U.K., potentially paving the way for a return with Markle and their children.

Markle, however, is far less enthusiastic. While she supports Harry’s desire to reconnect with his father, sources have long said that’s where her willingness ends, especially as a wave of new royal biographies has only revived painful narratives.

Harry Feels ‘Stuck’

In Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, which came out March 26, author Tom Bower claims Meghan was seen as “a divisive agent” and a threat by William, 43, and his wife, Princess Kate, 44, while Queen Camilla, 78, allegedly griped to a friend, “Meghan’s brainwashed Harry.”

Meanwhile, in Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, royal historian Hugo Vickers alleges that Harry was “reluctant” to leave royal life in 2020 and suggests the prince had “bitten off more than he could chew” in marrying Markle, who the author paints as controlling.

For Markle, it all reinforces what she’s long feared – that any return to the U.K. would mean “walking back into the lion’s den,” as a source previously told RadarOnline.com.

While Markle remains wary of reopening old wounds, Harry is feeling increasingly stuck.

EXCLUSIVE: Why Prince Harry’s Latest Outburst Against Trump is the True Reason King Charles Won’t Reunite With Royal Exile Son in America

Prince Harry and King Charles aren't expected to cross paths.Mega

Prince Harry‘s outspoken remarks on global politics – including a pointed call for US leadership under President Donald Trump – have deepened tensions with the Royal Family, with sources telling RadarOnline.com the intervention is a key reason King Charles is not meeting his son during the monarch’s US visit.

Harry, 41, made the comments during a recent surprise appearance in Kyiv, where he addressed world leaders and military officials at a security forum.

The Duke of Sussex, a former British Army officer, used the platform to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and directly appeal to both Vladimir Putin and Trump.

His intervention came just ahead of Charles, 77, taking his high-stakes state visit to the United States alongside Queen Camilla, 78, with the trip focused on strengthening diplomatic ties amid strained relations between Washington and London as the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Speaking in Ukraine, Harry said, “President Putin, no nation benefits from the continued loss of life we are witnessing. There is still a moment, now, to stop this war, to prevent further suffering for Ukrainians and Russians alike, and to choose a different course.”

He also urged greater US involvement, stating: “This is a moment for American leadership, a moment for America to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations – not out of charity, but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”

Royal Visit Complicated by Remarks

Sources close to the royal household said Harry’s remarks have complicated an already delicate diplomatic landscape.

One palace aide told us: “Comments of this nature, even when driven by genuine concern, inevitably create complications for the monarchy – especially when they intersect so directly with US leadership at a time when the King is undertaking a formal state visit.

“There is a careful balance that has to be maintained between personal expression and diplomatic neutrality, and moments like this can make that balance harder to sustain.”

The insider continued: “The King’s program in the United States has been meticulously planned with a clear focus on statecraft, international relations, and reinforcing strategic ties. It is a tightly managed schedule where every engagement carries significance, and introducing personal or family considerations into that framework risks diverting attention from the core objectives of the visit and potentially undermining its broader diplomatic impact.”

Harry emphasized he was speaking in a personal capacity in Kyiv, saying: “I am here as a soldier who understands service, as a humanitarian who has seen the human cost of conflict, and as a friend of Ukraine who believes the world must not grow used to this war or numb to its consequences.”

He went on to frame the conflict as a broader struggle, adding, “What’s happening here is not simply a war about territory. It’s a war about values, about sovereignty, about whether the principles that underpin our shared democracy still hold meaning.”

Despite the personal tone, his remarks were widely interpreted as political, particularly his insistence “the United States has a singular role in this story.”

He added: “Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders would be respected.”

Buckingham Palace has confirmed no meeting between Charles and Harry will take place during the visit, with a spokesperson noting that the trip is a working engagement rather than a private occasion.

The visit, scheduled from April 27 to 30, will include a state banquet at the White House and a historic address to Congress.

Charles’ visit carries significant diplomatic weight, particularly given current geopolitical tensions.

Meanwhile, sources indicated there is a mutual understanding between both sides the focus must remain on state matters.

Harry also delivered a stark condemnation of Russia’s actions during his speech, accusing it of “deliberate attacks on civilians, mass killings, torture, sexual violence, and the forced deportation of entire populations.”

He hit out: “We must be absolutely clear about the nature of this war. This is not an accident, nor misunderstanding, nor the inevitable fog of conflict. It’s the product of sustained, deliberate policy, planned, executed, and defended at the highest levels.”

A source familiar with the situation said: “There is a clear reluctance within official channels to allow private family issues to intersect with what is a highly sensitive and strategically important diplomatic visit for Charles. The view is that the two must remain firmly separate, particularly given the global attention and political nuance surrounding the trip.

“The overriding priority is to ensure that the visit unfolds smoothly and remains focused on its intended purpose, without any unnecessary distractions. In that context, it naturally reduces the scope for personal engagements or attempts at reconciliation, as the emphasis is entirely on maintaining a disciplined and carefully managed diplomatic agenda.”

Prince Harry is ‘desperate to return to the royal fold’

Prince Harry might want to return to his role within The Firm.

According to commentator Rafe Heydel-Mankoo, the Duke of Sussex’s recent comments seem to hint that he wants to make amends with his relatives after his and Meghan Markle’s dramatic exit from the U.K. in 2020.

“The more distant and disconnected he is from the monarchy, the more his relevance wanes. This is why he is undertaking these faux ‘royal’ engagements,” Heydel-Mankoo said.

“It’s the only thing in civilian life he knows how to do; it is the best way of attracting media attention and, ultimately, I suspect he hopes it will somehow open a path for his return to the royal family,” he added.

After Harry made it clear he was “always” a part of his family, Heydel-Mankoo emphasized that he’s still “not a working royal.”

“Creating his own version of a royal engagement does not make him a working royal,” the journalist noted.

“Especially not when these trips are also designed alongside commercial operations for private financial gain,” Heydel-Mankoo said.

While the 41-year-old might want to customize what being a working royal is, the reporter recalled the boundary that Queen Elizabeth II made clear to Harry and Meghan before they moved to America.

“The position of Queen Elizabeth and King Charles II is quite clear: if the Sussexes wish to pursue private commercial ventures, they can never be working royals,” Heydel-Mankoo noted.

During the Spare author’s visit to Ukraine, an ITV reporter asked him if he sees himself as “not a working royal.”

“No. I will always be part of the royal family,” Harry replied.

“I am here working doing the things that I was born to do,” he gushed. “You know, I enjoy doing it. I enjoy coming to do these trips and supporting that I’ve ever before, the friends that I’ve made, and hopefully, bringing attention to issues that, for one reason or another, drop out of the news because something else has popped up.”
