iPhone 17, iPhone Air, AirPods Pro 3, and new wearables just unveiled

Apple (AAPL) on Tuesday unveiled its iPhone 17 lineup during an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., including its all-new iPhone Air.

Apple’s iPhone is its most important product, and major redesigns like the iPhone Air generally work to help power sales well into the year ahead. The change comes after years of what was more or less the same design styling across iPhone generations.

In addition to the iPhone Air debut, Apple announced major improvements to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, including upgraded cameras and batteries and better overall durability. But the Air is easily the star of the show.

Shares in Apple were little changed in Wednesday’s premarket after ending about 1.5% lower on Tuesday.

iPhone Air

The $999 iPhone Air brings the biggest changes to the iPhone since the company unveiled its iPhone X in 2017, when Apple implemented its edge-to-edge screen design.

Apple said the Air’s frame, constructed out of titanium, is both light and durable. The company also uses its Ceramic Shield protection around the entire phone to make it its strongest phone yet.

At just 5.6 millimeters thick, the iPhone Air is the company’s thinnest iPhone to date. It packs a 6.5-inch display, along with the company’s always-on display and Pro Motion technology.

Inside, the Air features Apple’s new A19 Pro chip, with improved AI acceleration via neural accelerators built into each of the chip’s 5 GPU cores.

The Air also comes with Apple’s N1 chip for wireless and Bluetooth, plus its C1X modem, which Apple said uses 30% less power, which, the company claimed, makes the iPhone Air its most power-efficient yet.

Apple said the Air’s rear 48-megapixel Fusion camera allows you to capture 2x telephoto-like images. The Air also gets Apple’s new Center Stage camera, which the company said can capture landscape and portrait photos without having to rotate your camera.

You can also now record video from the rear and front cameras simultaneously, so you can capture your reaction during a sporting event or concert.

Still, it will be interesting to see if consumers will be OK with the iPhone’s 2x telephoto-like camera when they can opt for a true telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

As far as battery life, Apple claimed the Air will be able to last all day.

The iPhone Air is seen as the first step toward the company’s plans for a foldable iPhone, expected to hit the market in 2026, according to reports from Bloomberg and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

iPhone 17

Apple’s $799 iPhone 17 doesn’t get the same wholesale redesign as the Air, but it does come with a larger 6.3-inch display and Apple’s Pro Motion, with a refresh rate up to 120 hertz that drops to 1 hertz on the lock screen.

The 17 also gets improved glare resistance and Apple’s Ceramic Shield 2, which the company said makes the display two times more scratch-resistant.

Inside, the iPhone 17 gets the company’s 3nm A19 chip, complete with a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU for graphics. Apple said that makes the iPhone 17 20% faster than the iPhone 16.

Around back, the iPhone 17 gets an improved 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with up to 2x software zoom. The phone also gets a new 12-megapixel wide-angle camera.

Up front, the iPhone 17 comes with Apple’s Center Stage camera. AI tracking also keeps everyone in the frame in selfies. Video shot using the front camera is also more stabilized for when you want to shoot selfie videos on the run.

The phone starts with 256GB of storage rather than iPhone 16’s 128GB.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max

Apple’s premium $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max both come equipped with the company’s A19 Pro and a new aluminum unibody design.

Apple is promoting the Pro and Pro Max’s new built-in vapor chamber, which it said will help move heat away from the phone’s internal components and prevent slowdown. That, Apple said, will allow the phone to have 40% better sustained performance than prior-generation iPhones.

The iPhone 17 Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max get enhanced batteries, with the Pro Max getting the longest-lasting battery in an iPhone yet.

Apple’s Pro line is always the company’s camera showcase, and it’s no different for the iPhone 17 Pro. The phone’s cameras feature upgraded front cameras with the same Center Stage capabilities as the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air.

Around back, all three of the Pro’s cameras are 48MP, and each is now one of Apple’s Fusion cameras. The telephoto camera now gets up to 8x optical zoom with a 56% larger sensor for better shots taken from afar.

Apple’s iPhone is its biggest revenue generator, making up $201.2 billion of the company’s $391 billion in sales in 2024. Even Apple’s second-largest business, its Services segment, made just $96.2 billion.

Apple reveals Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3 with hypertension detection, improved durability

Apple (AAPL) unveiled its latest Apple Watch lineup during its annual iPhone event on Tuesday at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

The watches, which include the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3, get blood pressure monitoring, improved cellular connections, improved durability, and a number of additional features.

Apple Watch Series 11

Apple said the $399 Series 11 is now two times more scratch-resistant than its Series 10 predecessor. The watch also now gets 5G connectivity for the first time and uses less battery for cellular connections.

Apple is adding new capabilities to the watch’s heart health and sleep functions. The Series 11 can now detect patterns of high blood pressure when worn for 30 days. Apple said it expects to get clearance from the FDA soon, which the company claims will allow it to alert up to 1 million users about potential hypertension.

A new sleep score feature will help users better understand their sleep patterns over time.

The Series 11 now has up to 24 hours of battery life. Apple Watches can already provide a bit more than 24 hours of usage, so expect the Series 11 to last longer than that.

And like the AirPods Pro 3, the Apple Watch Series 11 gets live translation.

Apple Watch Ultra 3

Apple also unveiled its high-powered Apple Watch Ultra 3. The $799 watch has a larger, brighter display with improved refresh rates so you can see seconds in the always-on screen.

Like the Series 11, the Ultra 3 gets 5G connectivity. It also comes with satellite connectivity, allowing you to seek emergency help if needed, send messages, and track your location via the Find My app. Apple said emergency SOS will be available for free for two years.

The Ultra 3 gets up to 42 hours of battery life.

As with the Series 11, the Ultra 3 comes with hypertension and sleep apnea detection.

Apple’s $249 entry-level SE also gets upgrades, including an always-on display, wrist temperature tracking, and more. Apple said the watch also gets sleep apnea tracking and the company’s new sleep scoring, as well as a speaker that can play music.

Fast charging allows the watch to charge two times faster than the prior-generation SE 2, and like the Series 11, it comes with up to 24 hours of battery life.

Everything Apple just announced: iPhone 17 Air, AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11 and more

Everything you need to know about Apple’s launch:

  • Apple launched new iPhonesApple Watches and AirPods on Tuesday. They will hit store shelves and ship to homes on Sept. 19.
  • Apple announced four new iPhone models, including the newest model, called the iPhone 17 Air. It is thinner and lighter than Apple’s other devices, and it’s based on a new titanium body. It starts at $999.
  • The entry level iPhone, called iPhone 17, is still $799, and it got an improved display with a higher refresh rate, and camera. The phone’s screen is also slightly larger, while the phone itself has stayed the same size.
  • Apple’s iPhone Pro got a $100 price bump and the iPhone 17 Pro now starts at $1,099. However, Apple says that users will get 256GB of storage space on the entry-level, as opposed to 128GB starting.
  • Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max did not get a major update to its pricing, and remains at $1,199 and up, although Apple did add a new highest-end model with 2TB of storage.
  • The new AirPods Pro 3 have improved audio quality and noise cancelling. One new feature is that they will be able to translate conversations in foreign languages in real time. They cost $249, the same price as their predecessor.
  • The company released three new Apple Watch models, called Series 11, including updating its low-end SE and high-end Ultra models. The prices didn’t change. Apple added a new health feature to the devices that will use machine learning to determine if the user is at risk for high blood pressure.
  • Apple’s iOS 26 will be available as a free software update on Monday.

Apple is charging $200 to double the iPhone’s storage

While Apple tweaked the starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro, raising it by $100, it said that part of the reason was that it has the same amount of storage as an upgraded version from last year.

“iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099, the same great price as last year’s 256GB iPhone 16 Pro,” said Apple’s marketing chief Greg Joswiak during the launch event.

But now, the first upgraded storage option on iPhone 17 models costs $200, instead of $100. For example, an iPhone 17 Air with 256GB of storage costs $999 while the one with 512GB of storage costs $1,199, according to Apple’s website.

For the iPhone 17 Pro models, Apple is only charging $200 to upgrade from 512GB of storage to 1TB, but it will charge an extra $500, bringing the total price to $1,999, for 2TB of storage space.

Apple previously charged $200 to upgrade devices from 256GB of storage to 512GB. Now that all of Apple’s iPhone models this year start with 256GB of storage space, it will cost more to upgrade them. — Kif Leswing

Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman said that the iPhone 17 launch comes at a “really tough” moment for Apple as the company is facing questions about its artificial intelligence efforts.

“The problem with Apple is that everything that’s showing up today is, in fact, pretty incremental,” he told CNBC’s “Power Lunch.” “Yes, the phone is thinner, and yes, it looks great. We haven’t had a big supercycle in four years.”

Newman said that last year’s promise of Apple Intelligence driving a big cycle didn’t really pan out, but the company does have “the longest on-ramp” to get AI right with its massive user base.

Apple’s new iPhone operating system comes out on Monday

The software, iOS 26, will be released to the public on Monday, Apple said in press releases for the new iPhones.

For most people, the biggest change in iOS 26 will be a complete visual redesign. Apple calls its new iOS look “liquid glass,” and has replaced static opaque buttons and menus throughout the operating system with new animations and transparent designs that are intended to flow like water as the user navigates the software. — Kif Leswing

In addition, Apple’s mid-range phone, the $899 iPhone 16 Plus, was discontinued. It’s been replaced by a $999 iPhone Air.

Apple’s entry-level iPhone 17 remains at $799 and up. Meanwhile, Apple’s high end Pro Max phones will cost $1,199. — Kif Leswing

Apple says it has updated the GPUs in its chips for AI, can run LLMs locally

Apple’s new chip in the iPhone Air and Pro models, called the A19 Pro, has several improvements for artificial intelligence, the company said on Tuesday.

The new chip has a second-generation caching architecture that helps to double its ability to do math, the company said. It also adding parts called “machine learning accelerators” into its graphics processors, or GPUs, which are typically used for AI, in addition to graphics.

Apple’s chief marketer Greg Joswiak said the chip will enable its devices to run local large language models.

The company says these updates will allow its new phones to have three times the GPU computation as last year’s phones. Apple also said that the phone’s computation performance compares to its MacBook Pro laptops. — Kif Leswing

Apple improves the screen on entry-level iPhone 17

In previous years, one way Apple distinguished its entry-level iPhone from its “Pro” models was a feature it calls ProMotion, or the display’s refresh rate, which makes the entire interface smoother.

On Tuesday, Apple said its entry-level iPhone 17 will get the feature, and will also get a slightly larger 6.3-inch screen with smaller bezels. That means the screen is getting bigger, but the size of the phone is staying the same as that of the iPhone 16.

Apple positions its Apple Watch as a health aid, and its biggest medical improvement this year in its Series 11 models is that it can now monitor people with hypertension, or high blood pressure.

The company said that its algorithm looks for chronic high blood pressure in the background, by reviewing data over 30-day periods. Apple said its technology was based on a series of medical studies with 100,000 participants.

“Using data from the optical heart sensor, the algorithm looks for chronic high blood pressure by analyzing how your blood vessels respond,” said Sumbul Desai, Apple’s health vice president. However, she warned that it won’t detect all instances of hypertension.
