Donald Trump has made it clear that he is not a fan of Pope Leo XIV, and the numbers suggest he might want to reconsider.

CNN data analyst Harry Enten broke it down this week using NBC’s latest polling, and it looks like things are not going the president’s way in this one.

“Maybe President Trump is jealous of Pope Leo XIV because it is a blowout,” Enten said pulling up the results from the net approval rating poll. “This is just the American public at large, and look at this, it is a blowout. Pope Leo XIV is at plus-34. Look at where Donald Trump is at minus-12.

“It’s not even close,” Enten continued. “It’s a nearly 50-point blowout amongst the American public at large. Pope Leo XIV is absolutely crushing President Trump when it comes to how popular they are at least as of the last month.”

Enten added that Pope Leo XIV “was the most popular person tested” by NBC News.

“I believe the president is making a humongous mistakes going against the most popular guy in America,” Enten said.

He then showed polling that was aimed specifically at Catholics.

“Among American Catholics, President Trump is struggling,” he said. “Maybe this is the reason why he is going after the Pope”

Enten showed that Trump was at +20 with American Catholics in Nov. 2024.

“Down he goes,” Enten said revealing the numbers. “Down he goes into the Dead Sea. Minus-4 points. That is a nearly 25-point switcheroo in the wrong direction. The president has been struggling with Catholics, and I must say, in my expert opinion, I’m not quite sure that going after the Pope is the way to recover with Catholics.”

Enten then moved on to Trump’s polling with American Catholics on the war in Iran. The polling showed that the military action has a minus-10 approval rating, and that Trump has an overall minus-20 approval rating on how he has handled Iran.

“The bottom line is this, the Pope is emblematic of Catholics here in the United States,” he said. “The Pope is far more popular with the American public than Trump is her in the United States, and Trump has been struggling with Catholics here in the United States very much so losing a lot of ground.”

After Pope Leo XIV spoke out against the war in Iran, Trump lashed out on him on Truth Social on April 12.

“Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He talks about ‘fear’ of the Trump Administration, but doesn’t mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian Organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services, even when going outside, and being ten and twenty feet apart. I like his brother Louis much better than I like him, because Louis is all MAGA. He gets it, and Leo doesn’t!

“I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela, a Country that was sending massive amounts of Drugs into the United States and, even worse, emptying their prisons, including murderers, drug dealers, and killers into our Country,” Trump continued. “And I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I’m doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do, setting Record Low Numbers in Crime, and creating the Greatest Stock Market in History. Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise. He wasn’t on any list to be Pope, and was only put there by the Church because he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump. If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

Trump was not through.

“Unfortunately, Leo’s Weak on Crime, Weak on Nuclear Weapons, does not sit well with me, nor does the fact that he meets with Obama Sympathizers like David Axelrod, a LOSER from the Left, who is one of those who wanted churchgoers and clerics to be arrested,” the president wrote. “Leo should get his act together as Pope, use Common Sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a politician. It’s hurting him very badly and, more importantly, it’s hurting the Catholic Church! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
