A mom isn’t sure she’s doing anything wrong after her husband tells her it’s “weird” to breastfeed their baby in front of their older son.

The original poster (OP) shared their story on Reddit and explained that she’s been breastfeeding her baby in front of her 8-year-old son. She said her son was initially curious and had “started to stare,” so OP answered his questions and told him not to stare. She added that her son seemed to move on and didn’t pay it mind again.

However, now OP said her husband has “taken issue” with their older son watching her breastfeed. She said he’s been asking their son to leave the room when OP breastfeeds to “give me privacy.” Although OP said she told her husband that she often has her son in the room, he told her that he feels their son is at an age that makes it “weird.”

She asks for some perspective from the community and wants to know if she’s doing something weird or potentially inappropriate.

In her comments, one person said that the only person making this situation weird is OP’s husband.

“No, it’s not. You taught your son exactly how to behave. Your husband is the one making it weird,” they wrote. In the same thread as that comment, another person wrote, “Literally! Using breasts for what they’re made for is not inappropriate. Sexualizing it is inappropriate.”

Another person echoed similar sentiments and said that they feel like OP’s husband is setting a bad example for the couple’s son.

“No, it’s not weird. You are literally taking care of your baby the way nature/God/whatever designed you to do this. It’s entirely appropriate,” they said. “It’s also a good chance to teach your son about what’s normal and appropriate behavior.”

“Chances are he’ll encounter breastfeeding at some point, whether in public or with a partner, and he will learn from the example you’re setting,” they continued. “Should he judge the woman (or his partner) for caring for her child? Or should he understand it’s a normal part of existence and not a big deal to encounter?”

A third person said that if OP is answering her son’s questions and making sure he’s aware of what’s happening, then there’s nothing weird about it.

“It’s entirely appropriate. If you answer his questions, and treat it like it’s a normal, natural way to feed a baby, that’s how your son will view it,” they wrote. “No reason to make it weird, because it’s not weird.”
