‘He Came Out of Me?’ Mom Delivers Record-Breaking Baby That Stuns Maternity Ward

“It’s just more to love.”

Daniella Hines got more than just a surprise in the delivery room, she got a big one: a baby boy tipping the scales at 13 pounds, 15 ounces, nearly twice the size of an average newborn.

“He was the talk of the maternity ward!” Hines, 40, tells TODAY.com of her son Annan, born Sept. 3 at BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in Riverview, Florida, just south of Tampa. According to the hospital’s media relations department, he is believed to be the largest baby ever delivered there.

The entrepreneur and her husband, Andre Sr., are both tall. She’s 6 feet, and he edges her out by two inches, and she suspects genetics played a role in Annan’s size.

While Hines was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, she says her glucose levels were strictly controlled, an important factor since the condition can sometimes lead to unusually large babies.

During Hines’s C-section, she recalls a strange sensation, unlike the surgical delivery she experienced with Annan’s brother, Andre Jr., who weighed 12 pounds, 11 ounces.

“I remember thinking, ‘What are they pulling out of me?’ What is going on here?’ I felt so much pressure,” Hines says with a laugh.

Moments later, she caught her first glimpse of Annan and it all made sense.

“He was so big. I was like, ‘Whose baby is this? He came out of me?'” Hines says. “Then everybody starts coming in because it’s not every day you see an almost 14 pound baby pop out. He was like a little celebrity.”

“I can’t wait to show him when he gets older: ‘Look you were in the news!'” she adds.

Annan’s mother describes him as “really chill,” except when he’s ready to eat, which, she notes, is completely understandable.

“We didn’t expect such a big blessing,” Hines tells TODAY. “But it’s just more to love!”

In 2023, a woman in Brazil welcomed a 16-pound baby boy, who measured 2 feet long.

The Guinness World record for the heaviest baby to survive infancy belongs to a boy weighing 22 pounds, 8 ounces, who was born in Aversa, Italy, in 1955.
