Members of the royal family adhere to a strict protocol that also affects their appearance. For instance, the men of the British royal family are always clean-shaven. However, Prince William recently surprised the public by appearing with a beard.

The Prince and Princess of Wales appeared in a social media clip to celebrate the end of the Paris Olympics. They took a break from their summer vacation to congratulate Team GB on their achievements.

While many famous faces like Snoop Dogg and David Beckham were featured in the video, William, 42, stole the spotlight with his new beard. Princess Catherine, who is currently battling cancer, accompanied him.

William and Kate have been enjoying their summer time off with their three children — Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

People can’t stop talking about William’s relaxed new look. “I had to watch that again, just to see William’s stubble — wowza!” commented a fan. “Pardon me ladies…I need to cool down. Prince William looks so handsome with a bit of facial stubble,” added another.

One wrote, “Great to Catherine again, and William unshaved haha, it’s been years since we’ve seen that, what a sight!” Another added, “William with a tan and a beard!!!! 😍” “I had to watch that again, just to see William’s stubble — wowza! 🙌 … and I’m waaaaaay too old to be writing that!” someone noted. “What a sight!” another commenter summed it up.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are getting ready to move into their new home, Forest Lodge, and have chosen to pay for the renovations themselves.

This decision comes after the backlash the Duke and Duchess of Sussex faced for using public money to renovate Frogmore Cottage.

William and Kate’s new home, Forest Lodge, is an eight-bedroom, Grade II listed property in Windsor Great Park.

The couple will move there later this year and reports suggest that work has already started on the property, including planting trees, adding hedges, and building fences for more privacy.

Speaking on the matter, royal expert Jennie Bond told The Mirror, “By ordinary standards, it is, of course, pretty grand. With eight bedrooms, beautiful gardens, and a tennis court, it would probably be worth around £16million on the open market.

She continued, “It needs a bit of renovation, but it’s reported that, to their credit, the prince and princess intend to fund any work themselves.”

“Lessons have clearly been learned from Harry and Meghan‘s extravagant, taxpayer-funded refurbishment of the home they so briefly occupied, Frogmore Cottage – although, to be fair, after leaving the UK, they finally paid the money back.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales put childhood first when it comes to Prince George’s modern path to the crown

Prince George isn’t just any 12-year-old — he’s the future king. Yet it’s thought that Kate Middleton and Prince William didn’t tell their eldest son of his royal fate until he was around 7 years old.

“He really has had a period of a normal childhood,” royal author Robert Lacey tells PEOPLE in this week’s exclusive cover story.

“William deliberately delayed this news until the last possible moment. It shows special care and thoughtfulness — it also tells us something about how William felt about the weight of the crown,” Lacey adds.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have succeeded in giving all three of their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, a childhood largely away from the cameras, putting their family first.

“William takes his role as father of the future King as seriously as he takes his role as future King. That’s key,” says royal biographer Robert Hardman. “His overarching priority is making sure they enjoy it rather than fear it.”

With King Charles still undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, questions about the future are inevitable. If George becomes heir to the throne before finishing school, William may delay any bestowal of the Prince of Wales title.

“They would want him to focus on having freedom before giving him any royal titles,” says a palace insider.

“I imagine that when William talks to George about things like this, he uses words like ‘destiny’ rather than ‘duty.’ ‘Duty’ has a sense of being trapped; ‘destiny’ has a sense of choice,” adds Lacey.

Indeed, times have changed. While King Charles was called “Sir” at school, William went by his first name, and George followed suit.

“It’s evolution, rightly so,” notes the close insider.

It reflects the modern vision William is defining for his son, who turned 12 on July 22. The milestone was marked with a portrait, in which he resembled his father with a country shirt and vest and a Taylor Swift-inspired friendship bracelet, and a playful video with his siblings.

He enjoys front-row seats in the royal box at Wimbledon, has had nearly a decade of balcony waves at Buckingham Palace and took his first step into royal duty by joining his parents at a Buckingham Palace tea honoring WWII veterans in May. At the same time, Prince George is also a big brother and a schoolboy, with a close-knit circle of friends at his coed school.

Unlike previous heirs, George has always attended coed day schools, a careful move by William and Kate that royal author Sally Bedell Smith says is significant.

“That chimes with William wanting to do things in a more modern way, putting all three children in the same school,” Bedell Smith says. “It’s a new direction — groundbreaking for the royal family.”

The pivotal decision of where Prince George will continue his education next year lies ahead. Eton College, the all-boys boarding school where William thrived, is the front-runner. It’s also located conveniently close to the family’s new home, Forest Lodge, in Windsor Great Park, where they plan to settle by year’s end.

But for now, Prince George will be focused solely on the carefree rhythms of childhood and will soon return to Lambrook School in September for his final year alongside Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Away from the spotlight, he leaps to his feet at soccer matches, cheering alongside his dad.

 

“He does the right things at the right moment, as any 12-year-old would — and that’s all that matters,” says a source close to the palace.
