Donald Trump suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz to the “Trump Strait” in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Sept. 2
The strait is a critical oil transport route and a key location for military operations amid the ongoing Iran War
Trump has previously renamed bodies of water on U.S. maps, including Lake Ontario to “Lake America” and the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”
President Donald Trump is now floating the possibility of naming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” amid the Iran War.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump, 80, wrote in a Truth Social post shared on Wednesday, Sept. 2. “Like America itself, it would be “hotter” than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The announcement comes amid a decline in public support for the war in Iran as the conflict drags on. A July poll conducted by Politico found a steep 13-point drop in support for the war among Trump’s voter base from when the war began in February, when the U.S. and Israel began large-scale airstrikes in Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, has historically been an important transport route for oil to be shipped to other countries and a significant location for military operations.
Iran has frequently closed the strait or impeded traffic in the busy shipping channel amid the conflict, causing oil and gas prices to increase.
On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the country “blacklisted” more than 40 oil transport vessels, a move that is “likely to further constrain efforts to export oil via the strait,” Reuters reported.
Trump’s idea to change the Strait of Hormuz to the “Trump Strait” comes amid several recent instances of renaming bodies of water after America. The latest occurred on Aug. 27, when Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, to “Lake America.”

Both New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney voiced opposition to the name change.
“An acronym for the Great Lakes used to be HOMES,” Hochul, 68, wrote in a post on X above a new map of the Great Lakes posted by the White House on Thursday, Aug. 27. “Thanks to Donald Trump, it’s now SHAME,” the governor of New York pointed out.
The move came after Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” in January 2025.
