Selena Gomez Wants Children After Wedding but Cannot Carry Pregnancy Due to Lupus

Following her marriage, Selena Gomez hopes to start a family soon with musician Benny Blanco; however, she ironically cannot carry a pregnancy due to health issues related to lupus.

According to Page Six, on the occasion of the series finale of the sequel Wizards Beyond Waverly Place (a follow-up to Wizards of Waverly Place), Selena Gomez shared an emotional message on her Instagram Story on November 10.

“Alex Russo is a mom now. Hopefully one day that will be me,” she captioned a clip from the season two finale, referring to her character.

Selena Gomez’s Longing for Children

Selena Gomez, 33, appears in several brief guest roles in the Disney+ series, which revolves around a new generation of wizards at Waverly Place, including Billie—a young girl sent to live with Alex’s older brother, Justin, for training.

The post from the “Kill Em with Kindness” singer was shared nearly two weeks after she married music producer Benny Blanco in an intimate wedding in California.

Earlier in March, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco shared on Jay Shetty’s podcast that they were very eager to start a family.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I love kids. I love making kids laugh; they are truly adorable. So when that day comes, I will be incredibly excited,” Selena Gomez told Jay Shetty.

Benny Blanco, who went public with his relationship with Selena Gomez in December 2023, also emphasized that whenever the singer meets children, she will “immediately go to them and talk for hours.”

He also underscored his desire to have children in an interview with InStyle magazine in June.

“I love kids; I love being an uncle. But I want to be a dad, God willing. I’m just dreaming and praying every day,” he said.

The Cruel Battle with Lupus

However, last year, the Emilia Perez actress revealed she cannot carry a pregnancy due to health issues related to lupus.

And due to the medications used to treat the disease, Selena Gomez admitted to experiencing complications including hand tremors, difficulty controlling her grip on objects, and weight fluctuations.

Despite this, in October 2024, she confirmed to Vanity Fair magazine that she still wants to have children through surrogacy or adoption.

“It makes me truly grateful that there are other paths for people who long to be mothers. I am one of those people; I am very excited for this journey, even though it will look a little different,” she said.

Following a high-profile engagement in December 2024 featuring a diamond ring and a viral Taco Bell picnic, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco finally officially tied the knot on September 27 in Santa Barbara, California.

The ceremony took place under a floral arch inside a tent draped in soft white chiffon, with floors covered in multicolored vintage-style rugs. The reception featured shimmering candlelight, tables decorated with dahlias, and velvet sofa seating areas that created a luxurious and cozy atmosphere.

In addition to close friends Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, the wedding gathered a star-studded guest list: Steve Martin, Martin Short, Paul Rudd, Paris Hilton, SZA, Camila Cabello, Cara Delevingne, Eric Andre, Finneas, and the Emilia Perez cast—Edgar Ramirez and Zoe Saldaña.

Six years. $30 million raised. And somehow, Selena Gomez is just getting started.

Her brand, Rare Beauty, is not just another celebrity makeup line – it’s quietly outpacing heavy hitters like Rhode, Haus Labs and Kylie Cosmetics in market share.

The only one still ahead? Fenty Beauty – though Rare just claimed the title of most Googled beauty brand this past year.

Not for a brand built on feelings.

“It’s important we continue to expand our mission and vision,” the Single Soon singer said, doubling down on her pledge to donate one percent of sales to mental health causes through the Rare Impact Fund.

And it’s working. Between Sephora and Ulta Beauty—yes, both— the brand is everywhere. The Ulta rollout alone helped raise over $2 million.

“Together we’ve already raised over $2 million in support of youth mental health… We’ve been able to reach over 3.5 young people annually,” she added.

But Gomez insisted this was always bigger than blush. “I’ve been in a makeup chair since I was seven… I wanted to create a welcoming space in beauty, where people can feel good about themselves.”

Her philosophy? Refreshingly simple: “I believe makeup is something to enjoy, not something you need.”

This week she picked up the Excellence in Beauty Philanthropy Award, proving her point – beauty cans sell and mean something.

Or, as Robert Redford once put it: “The glory of art is that it cannot only survive, it can lead.”

Selena Gomez Kisses Benny Blanco’s Foot, Says Their ‘Healthy’ Relationship Is ‘One of the Greatest Things of Life’

The pop star planted a smooch on her husband’s toe one week after he became the subject of online scrutiny for his dirty feet

NEED TO KNOW

  • Selena Gomez kissed Benny Blanco’s foot in the March 3 episode of his Friends Keep Secrets podcast
  • The singer also called her “healthy” relationship with her husband “one of the greatest things of life” in the episode
  • The foot kiss came a week after Blanco’s feet became the subject of online scrutiny for being dirty in the first Friends Keep Secrets episode

Never mind kissing the ground Benny Blanco walks on — Selena Gomez is going straight for the foot.

In the latest episode of Friends Keep Secrets, Blanco’s podcast with Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco, Gomez, 33, kissed her husband’s foot, a gesture that comes a week after social media backlash to the 37-year-old producer’s dirty feet. During the appearance, she also shared some insight into the music power couple’s “healthy” relationship.

Nearly 50 minutes into the new episode, published Tuesday, March 3, Gomez, who was sitting on the floor, leaned over and planted a smooch on a lounging Blanco’s index toe mid-conversation. The kiss gave the producer, who was speaking, pause. He looked down, slyly smiled, and turned to co-hosts Dave Burd, 37, and Batalucco, who is the rapper’s wife.

“You like that?” Blanco jokingly asked the duo, as Gomez playfully slapped his leg and said, “Oh, don’t make it a moment!”

Blanco then responded, “No. I wasn’t. I liked it. It made me feel good. I love you so much.”

As he expressed the sweet sentiment, the Only Murders in the Building star then doubled-down on the foot affection, this time resting her cheek on her husband’s toes.

After the gesture, Burd told the pair, “I was just thinking about back in Malibu when I first saw you guys display any public display of affection for the first time, and I thought, ‘I think this is going to work out.’ ”

On PDA with his wife, Blanco then added, “In interviews with her — because I know she likes to keep it professional — I try not to show too much, like … ‘cause she’s her own entity. I want her to shine and be her own independent woman. So I try so hard. I use every bone in my body not to be googly-eyed over her and not want to kiss her and jump her bones all the time.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Gomez told Blanco that their relationship “is probably so healthy and one of the greatest things of life.”

The “Who Says” singer’s foot kiss comes after Blanco set social media ablaze with his feet in the first episode of his new podcast, which debuted on Feb. 24.

As the producer and songwriter lounged, barefoot, on a couch in the episode, his feet appeared to be covered in dirt and placed on the couch cushions in Burd and Batalucco’s home, where cameras captured them. The internet didn’t hold back on their opinions in the YouTube comments section, calling Blanco’s feet “filthy” and urging him to wash the appendages.

Afterward, Gomez seemingly reacted to the foot-inspired uproar by sharing a sweet video of herself giving Blanco a smooch on her Instagram Stories and writing, “I fall more and more in love with you every day my love.”

Blanco also responded to the backlash over his feet while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! two days later, on Feb. 26.

Kimmel, 58, raised the subject at the end of the interview, even showing a photo of Blanco’s dirty feet on a screen display. Said the host, “Dave and Benny are here, and I neglected something important because there is something that turned up as people were watching your multimedia experience. People seem to be fascinated with the idea that Benny’s feet are very dirty.”

Blanco’s response? Take off a sock to show off a clean foot.

“I have great feet. Someone zoom in on my foot,” he fired back in the late-night show appearance. “Look at that clean foot. Are you kidding me?”

Selena Gomez says she was ‘misdiagnosed’ before receiving bipolar diagnosis

See the warning signs of the commonly overlooked condition

Actress and singer Selena Gomez continues to be outspoken about mental health following her diagnosis with bipolar disorder.

The former Disney star announced her diagnosis in 2020 during an Instagram Live video call with fellow Disney Channel standout Miley Cyrus. Gomez has since described this discovery as a relief, although not an easy path.

In a recent episode of the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Gomez – the co-founder of mental health publication Wondermind – shared details about her journey to diagnosis.

Fellow musician and husband Benny Blanco asked his wife if she knew she was bipolar before being officially diagnosed.

“I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” she responded. “I think people were just assuming – and I would try multiple therapists.”

“It’s actually really hard when we’re talking about these things, and for me to go, ‘Go get a therapist.’ All of it is so … complicated.”

Gomez detailed how her diagnosis required talking to “multiple different people,” stressing the importance of not giving up.

“I’m so grateful I went to four different rehabs because it all helped me understand it,” she said.

Blanco revealed that Gomez sometimes experiences a manic episode without recognizing it.

“She’ll start to realize she’s having it after it’s happening, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it’s happening,” he said.

“It’s such a delicate thing because … you’re not supposed to, technically, talk to the person about it while they’re deep in it.”

Blanco added that Gomez is “so hyper aware” of when she’s experiencing mania.

“I’m equally proud to say that I do have moments of mania,” she said. “I’m not ashamed at all, because I can catch them a bit quicker.”

“It is helpful to have a partner who will understand … and meet you where you are,” the singer added.

Since her diagnosis, Gomez said she lives life more “freely.”

“The whole hypocrisy of shaming people for therapy, or people not understanding it, is that it’s just not for you,” she said. “But for me, it finally allowed me to go, ‘Oh, that’s why I handled things the way I [did]. That’s why all the other people were able to get over things quickly, and I wasn’t.'”

Gomez added, “I’d act out of fear, I’d act out of love, I’d act out of passion, it was all inconsistent. It was crazy.”

The actress encouraged others that no matter the diagnosis, “you are not defined by a term.”

“It’s just informative to seek and talk and listen to podcasts or listen to certain things that will help you get information,” she said. “I do believe there is a lot of hope.”

Signs of bipolar disorder

About 2.8% of adults in the U.S. have experienced bipolar in the last year, while 4.4% experience it during their lifetime, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Formerly called manic depression or “manic-depressive disorder,” bipolar disorder is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy and activity levels, affecting the ability to carry out daily tasks.

This can include emotional highs, referred to as mania or hypomania, and lows, known as depression, per Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms can differ depending on bipolar type.

“You are not defined by a term.”

Manic and hypomanic episodes typically include three or more of the following symptoms:

  • Increased activity, energy or agitation

  • Needing less sleep than usual
  • Speaking quickly or being unusually talkative
  • Having racing thoughts or jumping from one topic to the next
  • Being easily distracted
  • Making poor decisions

Seeking diagnosis

Mayo Clinic encourages anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek help from a professional.

Diagnosis can be made through a physical exam and lab testing, as well as mental health assessments and tracking of moods, sleep patterns and other factors.

After diagnosis, Mayo Clinic recommends paying attention to warning signs to prevent episodes. Getting enough sleep, taking medications as directed, and abstaining from drugs and alcohol can also help.
