Arnold Schwarzenegger gets real: ‘Life is too short to let pain, fear and uncertainty hold you back’

Arnold Schwarzenegger has spent his life redefining what’s possible, whether in bodybuilding, Hollywood, or politics. Today, he’s bringing that same focus to a new mission: encouraging people to stay active and protect their mobility as they age. As Chief Movement Officer for Zimmer Biomet, Schwarzenegger is helping shine a light on a global health issue that often goes overlooked. With more than 500 million people worldwide living with arthritis—and many delaying treatment until their quality of life has suffered — he hopes to change the conversation around joint health.

In partnership with Zimmer Biomet, a leader in orthopedic innovation, Schwarzenegger is speaking out about the importance of movement and early action. Advances like smart knee implants and AI-assisted surgeries are making it easier for people to return to the activities they love. In this Q&A, Schwarzenegger reflects on his own experiences with joint health, how he’s adapted his fitness routine over the years, and why he believes movement is essential to living fully at any age.

You’ve conquered so many different worlds—bodybuilding, Hollywood, politics. What lessons from your career do you think apply to maintaining mobility and staying active as we age?

I have dedicated my life to fitness, so I know the power of movement. My priorities have changed, but my need to never stop moving hasn’t.

Even when I was competing in Mr. Universe, I was taking ballet lessons to perfect the way I moved my body. Now I’m focused on skiing every year with my family, playing with my grandchildren and my animals on the weekends or riding my bike and lifting, but I’ve never wanted to stop moving or sacrificing my mobility.

As I’ve gotten older, I have thanked myself for all the work and movement I’ve done my whole life, because I see how other people who are 78 are moving, and I can tell that the foundation I built has protected me. But I have to keep pushing myself and moving every day so I don’t rust.

I never want to get to a point where I can’t do the things that bring me happiness. You have to fuel your body so it moves properly—and if there’s something wrong, don’t wait. Act. Make an appointment with your doctor.

You’ve always been known for pushing your limits physically. Have you personally had to adjust your fitness routine over the years to accommodate aging joints, and if so, what changes have you made?

I’m no stranger to health issues. I’ve had my own health issues – shoulder surgery, hip replacement, and all of my heart surgeries from my congenital valve issue.

Right after my first heart surgery the doctor told me to stop the heavy weights to protect my new valves. I could have used this as an excuse to quit – but I didn’t. You can either have results, or you can have excuses, not both.

Now I use lighter weights, with more reps – and less rest between my set.

Why did you decide to partner with Zimmer Biomet to raise awareness about joint health, and what makes this initiative so important to you personally?

It’s important for me to be useful and use my platform to encourage people to be champions of their own health and to never stop moving.

I love Zimmer Biomet’s mission because it aligns with my own – I believe, “if you rest, you rust,” and my goal with working with this MedTech powerhouse is to continue to encourage people to see that movement creates joy and extends the quality of our lives. I hope to create a community and encourage anyone living with pain or mobility challenges to share their story with me and my team at YoullBeBack.com.

Many people don’t think about joint health until they start experiencing pain. What do you think needs to change in the way people approach joint care and joint replacements?

Most people want to be healthy. They want to move, but there are so many obstacles that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Vision is so important to me and has been since the beginning of my fitness journey five decades ago. If you don’t have a vision – a purpose – you will fail.

Vision helps you cut through the bullshit and take the next step. If your obstacle is pain, then I challenge you to envision your life without it. What would you be able to do? How would it affect your work, your hobbies—your life? Use that vision to overcome fear and uncertainty about talking to a doctor. That’s one of the main reasons why I’ve taken on this role with Zimmer Biomet so we can get these conversations started.

Don’t wait, act! That’s my message. I want anyone living with pain in their joints to know they are not alone and get them the information they need to fuel their comebacks.

There have been major advancements in joint replacement technology, including smart knee implants and robotic-assisted surgery. What excites you the most about these innovations, and how do they help people get back to their active lives faster?

There are so many innovations in the orthopedic space. Zimmer Biomet developed the world’s first and only “smart knee” (Persona IQ®) that can share information like step count walking speed and range of motion directly with your doctor.

There’s use of AI to help doctors and surgical robots are doing really cool things, too. They call it ROSA. ROSA helps doctors plan before surgery and works with skilled physicians during surgery, sharing data-driven insights based on the patient’s individual anatomy. How cool is that? It’s a robot that helps surgeons terminate pain. I know a thing or two about robots.

Celebrities have played a big role in educating the public about various health conditions, yet joint replacement hasn’t been widely discussed until now. How do you hope your involvement will change the conversation?

I want people to understand that joint health and mobility are essential to your physical fitness. If you don’t have your mobility your overall health can suffer and can get in the way of doing the things you love to do.

I hope that using my platform to raise awareness of joint health and the importance of movement will inspire change. That people living in pain will talk to their doctors and discuss what treatments may be right for them.

As someone who has built a career on strength, discipline, and movement, what advice would you give to people hesitant about joint replacement surgery or those unsure of their options?

This is a great question. People typically wait up to five years to talk to their doctor about joint paint. I get it. It’s scary. I’ve been there myself and I understand what they are going through. This is why our You’ll Be Back campaign is so important.

Life is too short to let pain, fear and uncertainty hold you back. If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. With You’ll Be Back, I want to create a community so that people don’t feel alone. Anyone living with pain or mobility challenges can share their story with me and my team at YoullBeBack.com.

What’s the next big challenge or passion project on your horizon?

The work I’m doing with Zimmer Biomet and the recent introduction of the You’ll Be Back campaign is a top priority for me right now. People are submitting their joint pain stories – and I want to see more. I want to inspire them to make their comebacks! I get passionate about any project that lets me help people live healthier, stronger lives.

For Schwarzenegger, the message is personal: staying active isn’t just about fitness—it’s about maintaining the freedom to do what you love. Through his work with Zimmer Biomet and the “You’ll Be Back” campaign, he’s encouraging people not to ignore pain or delay care, but to envision a future where they can move without limits. As technology advances and the population grows older, Schwarzenegger’s call to prioritize joint health feels less like a challenge and more like an invitation—to invest in ourselves, to stay in motion, and to keep building the lives we want to live.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Mourns Charlie Kirk: ‘A Great Communicator’ Assassinated for Having a Different Opinion

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 24: EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks onstage at a

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) reacted to the assassination of conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, pointing out that a “human life is gone.”

During a discussion with University of Southern California (USC) Interim President Beong-Soo Kim, Schwarzenegger described Kirk as being a “great father” and a “great husband” who was also a “great advocate” for Republican and conservative causes, according to the Los Angeles Times. Schwarzenegger’s comments come after Kirk was fatally shot in the neck on Wednesday at Utah Valley University (UVU), while taking part in a Q&A with students.

“I was very, very upset that someone’s life was taken because they have a different opinion,” Schwarzenegger stated. “I mean, it’s just unbelievable. I mean, this was a great communicator, a great advocate for the right, for Republican causes.”

Schwarzenegger continued to highlight how Kirk had “such a great way of communicating” with students, even if they agreed or disagreed with him.

“And, I just thought, it’s a human being. A human life is gone. He was a great father, a great husband. I was thinking about his children — they will only be reading about him now, instead of him reading to them, bedtime stories,” Schwarzenegger continued.

Arnold Schwarzenegger warns America is approaching democracy 'cliff' after Charlie Kirk assassination

Schwarzenegger continued to talk about how since Kirk’s assassination, there has been “endless amount of debates” about how to stop and prevent political violence, and pointed out that social media, the mainstream media, and both the Republican and Democrat parties are dividing Americans.

“We have to acknowledge that the cause of all of this is the social media companies that are dividing us. The mainstream media companies that are dividing us. The political parties, the Democrats that are dividing us. The Republicans that are dividing us,” Schwarzenegger said. “So, we’re getting hit from so many different angles.”

Breitbart News’s Paul Bois reported that celebrities such as Schwarzenegger, Schwarzenegger’s son-in-law Chris Pratt, pop star and actress Mandy Moore, and Candace Cameron Bure issued statements condemning the assassination of Kirk.

Lawmakers from both sides of aisle such as President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), and Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) have mourned the loss of Kirk and the loss of an advocate for free speech.

Trump, who has stated that he will be awarding Kirk, “posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” has also said that he will be attending Kirk’s funeral.

Throughout his career, Arnold Schwarzenegger, bodybuilding icon and seven-time Mr. Olympia champion, has often spoken about one food that has become a cornerstone of his daily diet: lentils.

The “magic legume” that keeps Schwarzenegger healthy

The actor and former governor of California says this simple dish, paired with grains and vegetables, not only strengthens his muscles but may also contribute to a longer life.

According to an international study that examined the diets of older adults in countries such as Japan, Sweden, Australia, and Greece, regular legume consumption is linked to greater life expectancy.

The report found that increasing daily intake by just 20 grams reduced mortality risk by up to 8 percent.

Lentils stand out among legumes thanks to their richness in plant-based protein, potassium, iron, and soluble fiber—nutrients that strengthen the heart and regulate blood sugar levels.

In addition, their polyphenols help fight inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which accelerate aging and the development of chronic diseases.

Lentils: an affordable and versatile food

For Schwarzenegger, incorporating lentils into his diet doesn’t mean overcomplicating things in the kitchen. “I love eating lentils with grains and vegetables for breakfast, but I have many more recipes,” he said a few months ago.

His advice is to prepare a large batch at the start of the week and use them as a base for salads, soups, or side dishes. With just garlic, lemon, and a drizzle of olive oil, they become a quick, heart-healthy meal.

The global impact of lentils

Communities in Okinawa, Japan, and Sardinia, Italy—both recognized for having some of the highest life expectancies in the world—also rely on legumes as a dietary staple.

This parallel underscores what science confirms and what Arnold has embraced in his own life: simple foods can make a big difference in long-term health.

Ultimately, lentils are not only a cost-effective and highly nutritious option but also a powerful tool for those seeking strength, energy, and longevity.

Arnold Schwarzenegger shares honest thought on why Charlie Kirk was killed

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been praised for his eloquence after sharing an impassioned speech in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death.

The Hollywood star and former Republican politician told students at the University of Southern California he was very upset that someone’s life was taken because they have a different opinion.

He attributed the blame for Kirk’s death, suspected to have been committed by Tyler Robinson, to division caused by social media companies, mainstream media and both Democratic and Republican politicians.

“We’re getting hit from so many different angles and we have to be very careful that we don’t get any closer to the cliff because when you fall down that cliff, there is no democracy,” he said.

He called upon students with differing political beliefs to unite and start communicating to show the world how “people power” can make a difference.

“Imagine you get together and start having communications together, you will be an example to the rest of the nation, for all universities – how you get together, how you do not see the other side as the enemy or to fight fire with fire or to declare war on each other,” he said.

Schwarzenegger added: “People power is the ultimate power – that’s what democracy is all about. Not politician power – it’s people power.”

Fans have been quick to praise the Terminator star for his measured response, with one writing: “Well said Arnold. More discussion, less rage.”

Another added: “Well stated… I’m not the biggest Arnold fan (politics wise) either, but he’s spot on with the problem and the solution!!!”

Elsewhere, another viewer stated: “I couldn’t agree more with Arnie. Social media can so easily warp the humanity out of your reality. Don’t let it.”

Kirk, the co-founder of the conservative youth movement Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while hosting an event at a Utah college on 10 September, as he responded to a question about gun violence and mass shootings.

Suspected gunman Robinson has since been taken into custody on suspicion of capital murder, weapons and obstruction offences.

After Schwarzenegger shared his comments online, the actor wrote on his social media page: “There’s something more important than my message in this video. It’s what you don’t hear. No heckling. No disrespect. No shouting.”

He continued: “I know that social media shows us the worst of humanity, and a few people celebrating a death will get more attention than hundreds of respectful people. Don’t let these companies and the rage influencers that profit from them convince you the worst of us are the most of us. They are a tiny minority that gets too much attention because anger makes you post, repost, and like.”

He praised the audience of almost 500 USC students for showing him no disrespect while he answered, stating: “That’s how most of the real world outside of the internet is. If you find yourself falling for the anger, go out in the real world and make yourself human again.”
