Sydney’s story could have ended in heartbreak… but instead, it became a powerful reminder of second chances. ![]()
She was found curled up on top of a dumpster in Fayetteville, North Carolina—small, scared, and surrounded by trash. Then known as Sadie, she was taken in by Cumberland County Animal Services, but her situation was urgent. She had an upper respiratory infection, and due to a reported bite incident after being physically disciplined, she couldn’t be placed for regular adoption.

Time was running out.
That’s when Victoria McGonigal, founder of Dochas N Gra Animal Rescue, stepped in. Knowing Sydney needed patience and care, she brought her to safety and gave her the chance she had been denied.
At the sanctuary, Sydney received medical treatment and slowly began to trust again. Day by day, she started to change. The fear faded. Her personality began to shine.
Now, Sydney is thriving.
She spends her days on the farm, playing with other dogs, soaking up affection, and even bonding with the horses—who she happily accepts kisses from. What was once a life of uncertainty has turned into one filled with comfort, purpose, and love.
From a dumpster to a place she can finally call home, Sydney’s journey is proof of what can happen when someone chooses to help instead of walk away
