Richard Gere hospitalised with pneumonia in Mexico

Actor Richard Gere has been hospitalised with pneumonia while on holiday with his family in Mexico.

Gere had travelled to the country to celebrate his wife Alejandra Silva’s 40th birthday. The couple have been married since 2018, and share two children together, who are also on the trip. According to TMZ, the actor was diagnosed with the infection after visiting a hospital near their residence in Nuevo Vallarta as a precautionary measure.

The facility decided to keep Gere in care overnight, but he’s since been discharged from the hospital and his health is reportedly on an upwards trajectory. According to the aforementioned publication, Gere has been given antibiotics to help with him his recovery after leaving the hospital.

According to a prior Instagram post from Silva, both of their children were also ill on the trip to Mexico. She wrote on Thursday: “Thank you all for the birthday wishes.. after almost 3 weeks of everyone being sick in our family today finally I feel much better! Thank you for all the love [heart] I give it all back to you!”

On Saturday, Silva shared another photo from their holiday which pictured Gere looking healthy, wearing a mask, and walking hand-in-hand with one of their sons. Despite TMZ reaching out to representatives of the actor for a comment, his team are yet to respond to the reports.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported Gere will star in the English remake of 2017 Hebrew language movie Longing. In the film, he plays a single bachelor whose life is transformed when he discovers an ex-girlfriend gave birth to his son two decades prior. Longing first premiered at the Venice Film Festival and at TIFF in 2017.

Executive producer Lisa Wilson said in a statement: “I am thrilled to be working with Richard Gere for the third time after Arbitrage and Norman. When I read the script of Longing I knew immediately that this would be perfect casting and thankfully Richard concurred.”

Richard Gere is recovering and “feeling much better” after being hospitalized with pneumonia during a family trip, according to his wife.

Alejandra Gere (formerly Silva) shared an update on Feb. 19 on Instagram that the worst is over after the 73-year-old actor came down with pneumonia while vacationing in Mexico with his wife and their children in celebration of her 40th birthday.

“I woke up this morning and I saw the news and all your kind and worry messages, he is recovering ❤️‍🩹 he is felling much better today!” she wrote. “The worst has already pass! Thank you all for you sweet messages we really appreciate them! ♥️♥️ #thankyou“

Alejandra Gere shared the update with a photo of the couple walking with their son while on vacation.

On Feb, 17, she shared in an Instagram post of her on the beach with their two children that the whole family had been dealing with illness.

“Thank you for all the birthday wishes..after almost 3 weeks of everyone being sick in our family today finally I feel much better,” she wrote on Feb. 17, one day after her birthday.

Richard Gere came down with a bad cough that worsened to the point where he checked into a hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia, according to a report by TMZ. A representative for Richard Gere confirmed the report in a statement via email to NBC News but declined to comment further.

The couple have been married since 2018 and have two sons together. The “Pretty Woman” star also has a 23-year-old son, Homer James Jigme Gere, with ex-wife Carey Lowell, and Alejandra Gere also has a son from a previous relationship.

“And we’re equally responsible for that. We thought it would be okay if we just flew in from Paris to L.A. to get together for a night to see each other. It wasn’t,” she said.

And, of course, there were those pesky — and unproven — rumors that Gere was gay. The tabloids had a field day with that story in the 1990s. She defended her husband to Rolling Stone in 1993, “It’s amazing to me, considering the number of women he’s associated with. Like, when does he have time to be gay?”

It felt like the odds were against them, and in the end, the relationship did not last. However, they probably never thought their future children with other partners would somehow link them back together. It’s a tale only Hollywood could tell.
