Their marriage may have ended decades ago, but Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere’s split is back in the spotlight — all thanks to their children.

If you missed the jaw-dropping news, Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber’s daughter Kaia Gerber, 24, and Richard Gere and Carey Lowell’s son Homer Gere, 26, are starring in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX series, The Shards. Seeing the kids on the red carpet has some fans longing for ’90s nostalgia when Crawford, the hottest supermodel at the time, and Gere walked down the aisle in an unexpected age-gap romance.

The dynamic duo was only married for four years, walking down the aisle in 1991 and divorcing in 1995, and their relationship has been described as “chilly” over the years by a Globe source. Still, the kids’ on-screen roles are shining a light on their divorce and why it happened in the first place.

The easy place to start is their 17-year age gap. She was 25 years old when she married the then-42-year-old Gere. Crawford said on Oprah’s Master Class in 2013 that she was OK with the older actor making the decisions in their relationship at the time.

“I was still 22, and at 22 — as a young woman — I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be,” Crawford explained. “I just think your 20s for women is such a time when you’re starting to come into your own and feel your own power and connect to your inner strength, and it’s hard to do that — it’s hard to change — in a relationship, because what one person might have signed up for, all of a sudden, you’re not that anymore.”

That wasn’t the only reason, though. Crawford was at the height of her career, and she was traveling the world for photo shoots, appearances, and struts down the catwalk. She told Porter magazine, via People, in 2015, that their careers didn’t allow them to “spend enough time together.”

“And we’re equally responsible for that. We thought it would be okay if we just flew in from Paris to L.A. to get together for a night to see each other. It wasn’t,” she said.

And, of course, there were those pesky — and unproven — rumors that Gere was gay. The tabloids had a field day with that story in the 1990s. She defended her husband to Rolling Stone in 1993, “It’s amazing to me, considering the number of women he’s associated with. Like, when does he have time to be gay?”

It felt like the odds were against them, and in the end, the relationship did not last. However, they probably never thought their future children with other partners would somehow link them back together. It’s a tale only Hollywood could tell.

Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird.
