The Queen spoke about the health issue the palace originally announced she had on Nov. 5
Queen Camilla is opening up about her health after reducing her duties for the Qatar state visit while recovering from a chest infection.
On Dec. 3, the Queen, 77, told guests at the Buckingham Palace festivities for the incoming state visit that her recent chest infection was a form of pneumonia. It’s understood that Queen Camilla is recovering well, but continues to experience episodic symptoms of post-viral fatigue from the chest infection that the palace announced she had on Nov. 5.
The Queen seemed to be in good spirits as she arrived by car at Buckingham Palace on Dec. 3, where she stepped out solo and fixed the front of her jacket as she ascended the steps. It was announced on the eve of the Qatari state visit that King Charles‘ wife wouldn’t be at the traditional kickoff at Horse Guards Parade in London, where she would have been out in the cold and likely traveled back to the palace by carriage (which are known to be bumpy!).

Instead, the Queen was driven to the palace later in the day for the luncheon welcoming the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, and viewing of objects after that have ties to Qatar.
It was confirmed on the eve of the state visit that the Queen was also reducing her role at the glam state banquet later on Dec. 3 in light of her health. Queen Camilla is expected to pose for photos with the Amir and Sheikha Jawaher, but will retire during the traditional receiving line. She is expected to attend the dinner, and will participate in farewells on Dec. 4, the final day of the two-day stay.

The Amir of Qatar and his wife are in the U.K. at the invitation of King Charles, 76, and state visits are a key way for Britain to boost diplomatic bonds. The incoming state visit from Qatar was announced in October, and it was revealed in November that Kate Middleton and Prince William would help with the welcome on Dec. 3. It was significant to see Princess Kate, 42, participate in the pageantry, from greeting the guests of honor to the Horse Guards Parade pomp to the carriage ride back to the palace and beyond as she gradually resumes royal duties after completing chemotherapy.

The Princess of Wales has been outside of the spotlight for most of 2024 after announcing in March that she was undergoing treatment for cancer and said in September it was a “relief” to have completed chemo.
Princess Kate isn’t expected at the state banquet this evening, but Queen Camilla will be there. The Queen shifted her schedule for the specifics of the state visit in accordance with doctors’ advice, and is experiencing diminished reserves of energy.

It’s understood that there has been no change to her diagnosis or treatment following the Nov. 5 announcement about her chest infection, and she returned to work just a few days later on Nov. 12. There, she spoke about having “a bit of sort of coughing going on” as a lingering symptom, and has since skipped the Gladiator II premiere on Nov. 13 and Royal Variety Performance on Nov. 22 as she continues recuperating.
The Queen is thought to be taking each day as it comes in light of the chest infection, aligning with doctors’ advice, and post-viral fatigue symptoms can linger for weeks. Tomorrow, she is due to appear at the Entente Littéraire Prize Ceremony with Birgitte Macron, the First Lady of France, in London.
What’s Going on With Queen Camilla’s Health? Concern as Her Majesty Cancels Another Appearance
Queen Camilla has been unwell with a chest infection for a full month.
Queen Camilla has pulled out of more scheduled appearances amid an ongoing chest infection that’s caused her to miss weeks of events.
Her Majesty first canceled multiple engagements at the beginning of November, and Buckingham Palace even issued a statement saying, “Her Majesty The Queen is currently unwell with a chest infection, for which her doctors have advised a short period of rest. With great regret, Her Majesty has therefore had to withdraw from her engagements for this week, but she very much hopes to be recovered in time to attend this weekend’s Remembrance events as normal. She apologizes to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”
She ended up having to cancel the Remembrance events as well, at which point the Palace said, “Following doctors’ guidance to ensure a full recovery from a seasonal chest infection and to protect others from any potential risk, Her Majesty will not attend this weekend’s Remembrance events. While this is a source of great disappointment to the Queen, she will mark the occasion privately at home and hopes to return to public duties early next week.”
Queen Camilla ended up attending an event on November 12, saying, “I’m obviously getting much better, bit of sort of coughing going on.”
But then the Palace announced that she’d be canceling some of her multiple appearances at the Qatar state visit. Example? She didn’t attend the arrival ceremony, instead arriving at Buckingham Palace by car:
Her Majesty also opted out of the receiving line—although she will attend the official dinner. The good news? Per People, “It’s understood that there has been no change to her diagnosis or treatment” and Queen Camilla is “simply taking more time to recuperate.”
Queen Camilla Cancels Major Appearance as Palace Issues Health Update
The Queen is changing her plans for the incoming state visit
Queen Camilla is changing her plans for the incoming Qatar state visit as she continues recovering from a chest infection.
The palace said on Dec. 2 that the Queen, 77, will no longer partake in the official kickoff of the Qatar state visit to the U.K. on Dec. 3. It’s understood that King Charles‘ wife is continuing to experience lingering side effects from the chest infection that Buckingham Palace announced on Nov. 5 and has diminished reserves of energy.
In accordance with doctors’ advice, Queen Camilla has adjusted her itinerary for the state visit that starts tomorrow, welcoming the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani.
She will no longer appear at the arrival ceremony at Horse Guards Parade (which Kate Middleton and Prince William are expected to attend) but will appear at the traditional Buckingham Palace lunch and viewing of objects after.
The first night of the two-day state visit will be capped with a glittering state banquet, where Queen Camilla will pose for photos with the Amir and Sheikha Jawaher, but retire during the traditional receiving line. The Queen will then attend the dinner and join the farewells on the final day of the stay.
It’s a pivot from the original plans for Queen Camilla, but it’s understood that there has been no change to her diagnosis or treatment following the early November announcement about her chest infection. State visits are synonymous with packed schedules, and the Queen is simply taking more time to recuperate.

Though the Queen isn’t expected to make any other tweaks to her calendar in light of the latest health announcement, it’s thought that she will take each day as it comes, in accordance with doctors’ advice. While post-viral fatigue symptoms can linger for weeks, Queen Camilla is due to appear at the Entente Littéraire Prize Ceremony with Birgitte Macron, the first lady of France, on Dec. 4.
Queen Camilla missed the royal family’s Remembrance events on Nov. 9 and 10 to prioritize her health following the initial announcement about her chest infection, and spoke about a persistent symptom when she returned to royal duties on Nov. 12.

“I’m obviously getting much better, bit of sort of coughing going on,” the Queen remarked in a video shared on X by Rebecca English of the Daily Mail at a reception for The Booker Prize Foundation.
“I really wanted to come,” Camilla said of the soiree, held at her Clarence House home in London.
Queen Camilla’s ‘hatred’ that divides her from the royal family
King Charles’ wife has a strong aversion to winter sports
In the same interview in The Times, Tom revealed his mother “hates” skiing – a hobby the other royals revel in.
“My mother hated skiing, so she’d send us up the mountain with a guide while she sat and read her book. She’d come up in the ski lift to meet us for lunch,” Tom said.
This is in stark contrast to King Charles, and his children and siblings, who all adore skiing and are known for taking to the mountains whenever possible.
Camilla’s sisters-in-law, Sarah Ferguson and Duchess Sophie, partners of King Charles’ brothers Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, even took jobs on the slopes in their youth, with Duchess Sarah working as a chalet maid and Sophie doing a season as a ski rep.
Duchess Sarah was often seen skiing with Princess Diana too, who was also a keen skier despite not being as competent as her husband. Watch the throwback clip below to see Sarah and Diana’s silliness on the slopes bemuse King Charles.
Queen Camilla isn’t the only ski hater…
While the majority of the royals are ski bunnies, Queen Camilla’s avoidance of the sport is shared with Meghan Markle. Though the Duchess of Sussex has not claimed to hate skiing, Prince Harry admitted the snow sport was something he cherished with his ex, Cressida Bonas.
In his memoir, Spare, Prince Harry revealed that he and Cressida, whom he dated for two years, had a shared love of skiing, going so far as to call the activity “sacred” and “symbolic”.
“Skiing was so sacred for us, so symbolic, especially after our previous skiing holiday, in Switzerland, when she’d miraculously opened me up,” Harry wrote.
Though the Duke of Sussex loved skiing with Cressida, he added that the pair split during a ski holiday, writing: “At some point during that ski trip I’d realised that we weren’t a match,” Harry said. “How odd, I thought. Every time we go skiing… a revelation.”
Despite his love of snow sports, Prince Harry has never been known to ski with Meghan Markle, even though the couple has visited snowy locations.
Perhaps Meghan and Camilla could enjoy apres ski together while the other royals take to the mountains…
