Former first lady Michelle Obama said during a podcast on Wednesday that America was going through its “janky” era as she spoke with comedian Hasan Minhaj, who agreed.
“Well, that’s the 2.0 of life and when we talk about, how do you feel about the country? You know, there are versions of the country that happen, right? And the new version doesn’t make the old one bad. It’s necessary for growth. And I think we’re in just a janky version,” Obama told the comedian during an interview on her “IMO” podcast.
Minhaj agreed and asked the former first lady if he could curse.
“S— is jank right now. It’s super jank,” he said, as Obama agreed.

Obama said with each version of America, the country learned something about itself, before pointing to the ICE shootings in Minnesota and the community’s response.
“But with each, you know, with each version, we learned something about ourselves as a country. And you know I’m, right now I’m kind of digging the way folks are beginning to respond, right? I mean, Minnesota, powerful stuff. I mean it was a powerful reminder of what a community of people can do and are willing to do to protect one another,” she said.
She argued that when the country isn’t as “janky,” it doesn’t have to prove it.
“You know, when you’re not so janky, you don’t have to prove that, right? And so we haven’t been this janky for a while. And I think our muscle of understanding our truth just got a little lax. We started taking things for granted, right,” she said.
The former first lady said in November that the country was not ready for a woman president.
“As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” she said to a crowd of women at the Brooklyn Academy of Music while promoting her new book, “The Look.”
“That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not,” she continued.

The former first lady went on to say that she does not believe men in America are comfortable with a woman leading them.

Michelle Obama tells Colbert she feels ‘lost’ about current White House norms and standards under Trump
Former first lady says she’s confused about norms and standards while discussing East Wing changes
Former first lady Michelle Obama said she felt “lost” during a conversation with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday about the East Wing of the White House.
Obama joined “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to discuss her new book, “The Look,” which explores how she used fashion to express herself as a public figure and first lady.
Colbert asked Obama about President Donald Trump having the East Wing — which the late-night host said was the “heart” of the building and now “lost” — demolished to make room for a new ballroom to hold events like state dinners.
“Every family, every administration has a right and a duty to maintain the house, make investments and improvements and there are plenty of things that needed fixing there, but the thing, it makes me confused,” Obama said. “I am confused by what are the norms? What are the standards? What are the traditions? I just feel like what is important to us as a nation anymore?” she added.

The former first lady continued, “Because I am lost. There were a whole standard of norms and rules that we followed to a T, that we painstakingly tried to uphold, because it was bigger than us.”
“That East Wing, that is not mine. My feelings about that, it is not mine, it is ours. But we have to, as a country, decide what rules are we following? And who is to abide by them, and who isn’t? I am lost. And I hope that more Americans feel lost in a way that they want to be found again, because it is up to us to find what we are losing,” she added.
Earlier in the discussion, the former first lady described the East Wing as where “life happened.”
“The West Wing was work. It was sadness, it was problems, it was the guts of the White House, and the East Wing was where you felt light. That’s where children came. We had puppies. I mean, literally apples, and it was important distinction, because West Wing team, they needed that break. They needed to come to a place where they could be reminded of the reason we were doing this,” she said.

She also said she never viewed the White House as their house, but as the people’s house.
“I never viewed it, we never viewed it as our house. We were there for a time. We had a job to do, we always felt it was the people’s house,” she said.
Obama spoke to NBC’s “Today with Jenna & Friends” on Tuesday as well, and joked about the White House construction.
“There’s no guidebook,” Obama said of the challenges of being first lady. “There’s barely a staff. Now we don’t have a building.”

Michelle Obama shared a series of old photos from her childhood and teen years, revealing her journey of style discovery—and it all prompted the same reaction from fans.
Though she is now a fashion icon, Michelle Obama was once like everyone else: taking years of experimenting with every look to find her “signature style.”
Michelle Obama Took Years to Find Her Own Style
According to Hello! Magazine, Michelle Obama just took viewers back in time through never-before-seen photos, capturing moments when she tried various hairstyles such as braids, short bangs, and bouffants, alongside a bold fashion sense featuring denim, vibrant colors, and even bodycon dresses.
However, Michelle Obama did not post the photos merely for nostalgia. She attached a lengthy reflection on confidence and how fashion taught her that “appearance and power are often linked,” while also introducing her new book, The Look.

Michelle Obama wrote: “Long before I knew that my style could mean something to others, I spent years understanding what it meant to myself.”
“Whether it was choosing a first-day-of-school dress as a little girl, designing my own prom dress that my mother handmade, or walking across a college campus with braids and a denim outfit, those early choices taught me that how you show up is sometimes just as important as what you say or do.”
“Over time, I understood that confidence isn’t something anyone gives you; it’s something you have to choose for yourself every day. My new book, The Look, is a reflection of a lesson we all must learn in our own way: Power comes from showing up as your true self.”
Fans of Michelle Obama loved the series of past photos and her powerful message, with many agreeing that she has “always been a fashion icon.”
One person commented: “Oh, here is our Internet Momma with those Flashback Friday moments! You had such great confidence back then and are even more radiant now. I’m truly happy to have a fashion icon to look up to. Every single photo is truly top-tier.”

Michelle Obama Bluntly Describes The ‘New Version’ Of America With A 5-Letter Word
Former first lady Michelle Obama shone a light on the current state of the U.S on Wednesday, quipping that the country is in its “janky” era, but that Americans can grow from it.
“You know, there are versions of the country that happen, right? And the new version doesn’t make the old one bad,” Obama told comedian Hasan Minhaj on the show she co-hosts with her brother, “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson.”
“It’s necessary for growth, and I think we’re in just a janky version, right?” she said.
Minhaj agreed and then asked, “May I curse, Mrs. Obama?”

“You may,” she replied.
“Yeah, **** is jank right now,” he said. “Super jank.”

Obama put an optimistic spin on things, adding that “with each version, we learn something about ourselves as a country.”
“Right now, I’m kind of digging the way folks are beginning to respond, right?” she continued. “I mean, Minnesota, powerful stuff. I mean, it was a powerful reminder of what a community of people can do and are willing to do to protect one another. You know, when you’re not so janky, you don’t have to prove that, right?”
The Trump administration notoriously deployed federal agents to Minnesota at the end of last year as part of its aggressive deportation campaign. The massive public outcry over the operation intensified after federal agents killed U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good in January.
Former President Barack Obama warned that month that Pretti’s killing should serve as a “wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.”
Michelle Obama noted that as a country, “We haven’t been this janky for a while, and I think our muscle of understanding our truth just got a little lax.”
