Moms across the country have been getting a big surprise in the delivery room.

This year, moms have delivered babies weighing nearly double the average size — about 7 lbs., according to the University of Rochester Medical Center — setting new hospital records. Whether they were giving birth for the first time or expanding their family with another little one, each woman had one thing in common: they were shocked by the size of their new bundle of joy.

Here’s a look at some of the record-breaking babies born in 2025.

Paris Halo

In Alabama, first-time mom Pamela Mann gave birth to her baby girl Paris Halo on Tuesday, March 4, at Grandview Medical Center, according to Fox affiliate WBRC-TV and NBC affiliate WVTM-TV. While the baby had measured large on an ultrasound by both an ultrasound tech and her OB/GYN, Mann told WVTM that the extent of the newborn’s debut caught everyone by surprise.

“Everybody in the ER — they were amazed,” the 31-year-old delivery driver said about her baby, who entered the world weighing 13 lb., 4 oz.. “They were like, ‘OMG, oh, this is a big baby!’”

During her delivery, Mann faced some trepidation.

“The doctor pulls her out of me, and all the nurses are like, ‘Oh God!’ ‘Wow!’ ” Mann told Today. “Then I started freaking out because I had no idea what was happening.”

Speaking with WVTM, she recalled asking, ‘Is something wrong? What’s wrong?’ And once they actually just said she’s just big, I just broke out into tears.”

Annan

Back in September, Florida-based mom Daniella Hines got a big surprise when she delivered her son Annan at St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in Riverview, Florida. According to Today, the newborn came out weighing 13 lbs., 15 oz., which was the “biggest baby” in the hospital’s 10-year history.

“We didn’t expect such a big blessing,” she told Today. “But it’s just more to love!”

Unlike when she delivered her older son, Andre Jr., who came into the world weighing 12 lbs., 11 oz., Hines felt something different this time around.

“He was the talk of the maternity ward!” Hines, 40, told the outlet. “I remember thinking, ‘What are they pulling out of me?’ What is going on here?’ I felt so much pressure.”

After seeing the newborn for the first time, the strange feeling made more sense to her.

“He was so big. I was like, ‘Whose baby is this? He came out of me?’ ” Hines told Today. “Then everybody starts coming in because it’s not every day you see an almost 14-pound baby pop out. He was like a little celebrity.”

She added, “I can’t wait to show him when he gets older: ‘Look, you were in the news!'”

Cassian

Tennessee-based mom Shelby Martin had her birth plan meticulously mapped out — but life had other plans in store for her. In July, the boy mom of four delivered her son, Cassian, at HCA Healthcare’s TriStar Centennial Women’s Hospital in Nashville. The newborn entered the world weighing 12 lbs., 14 oz. becoming the largest newborn delivered at that location in three years, according to hospital personnel.

“We had a heads up that he was going to be big, but I would have never guessed almost 13 pounds,” Martin told PEOPLE in October. “Looking back on bump pictures, I probably should have known.”

Martin said when her little one was born, everyone in the room “lit up.” While she admitted that she was nervous before laying eyes on her newborn because it was her first C-section, she added that the moment her baby boy arrived, the energy in the room shifted.

“Everyone was amazed by his size! He made such a big impression that nurses and doctors from all over the hospital came by the NICU just to meet him,” she shared. “He quickly became a little celebrity during his stay.”

Now settled at home, Martin told PEOPLE that her son is “the brightest rainbow” that the family has been waiting for, as the happy news came one year after she experienced a pregnancy loss. Her son Cassian entered the world a year later on her 30th birthday, which Martin said brought back the color that the family had been missing.

“He truly is the brightest rainbow we had been dreaming of,” she added. “Of course, we still mourn our angel we lost, but being able to get him Earthside has filled something in all of us. His brothers are over the moon.”
