“I should have bought a lotto ticket that day!” said dad Neal Radia upon learning that he and his wife were having triplets
NEED TO KNOW
- California couple Stacie and Neal Radia learned during an ultrasound visit that they are the parents of triplets
- The odds of having triplets are 1 in 10,000 pregnancies
- The girls — identical twins Alyx and Ella and fraternal twin Charlie — were born in October
A California couple got the surprise of their lives when they came in for an ultrasound to make sure everything was okay.
“They were like, ‘Everything’s good, um, there’s three,” mom Stacie Radia recalled to CBS affiliate KFMB upon being told by medical staff that she was going to have triplets.
“She was like, We’re not having twins, we’re having triplets! I should have bought a lotto ticket that day!” Stacie’s husband, Neal, added.
The pair, who married in March, became parents of girl triplets seven months later — identical twins Alyx and Ella and fraternal twin Charlie — just in time for the family to celebrate the holidays together, KFMB reported.
The odds of having identical twins are 1 in 250 pregnancies, but the odds of having triplets are 1 in 10,000, the outlet reported. And incredibly, the Radias’ triplets were conceived naturally.

“There were three babies, two placentas. Two babies sharing [the] same placenta can create a lot of risk with one baby taking more of the blood from the other and not receiving enough back,” said Dr. Sean Daneshmand, medical director of perinatology at Scripps Clinic La Jolla, who was part of the team involved in Stacie’s care.
The couple, who said they had always wanted to have possibly three kids, told KFMB they had no history of twins or multiples in each of their families’ histories.

“She made it to 32 weeks walking into the OR,” Neal said.
Stacie also underwent a procedure so her cervix can provide additional support and avoid preterm labor.
The triplets were born at 3 lbs., in October, and spent three weeks in the NICU before being discharged, KFMB reported. Their birth weights are nearing 7 lbs.
“We’ve had many people call it a miracle, just the fact that it was spontaneous,” Stacie told KFMB.
