In an excerpt from her forthcoming memoir, The Woman In Me, Britney Spears provides an explanation for why she chose to shave her head in 2007 following an incident with paparazzi.
In the memoir the singer shares, “I’d been eyeballed so much growing up. I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager”. For Britney becoming bald was a kind of protest act, “Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back.”
In February 2007, Britney Spears had several troubling public incidents. Notably, she shaved her head during this time, which garnered significant media attention. Additionally, she was involved in other concerning events, such as hitting a photographer’s car with an umbrella and reportedly driving with one of her infant sons on her lap.
The year prior, in 2006, Britney Spears had filed for divorce from her husband, Kevin Federline. This divorce marked a challenging period in her personal life, and it was followed by a series of highly publicized issues and apparent emotional breakdowns.
Britney also opened up about the control she had in her life. The singer writes in her memoir that it made her “sick” that her father and his associates had control of her body, and explains that while living under their rules, she lost her passion for performing.
“I would do little bits of creative stuff here and there, but my heart wasn’t in it anymore. As far as my passion for singing and dancing, it was almost a joke at that point,” she writes. “Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself.”
Recently, Britney Spears, 41, and her husband Sam Asghari, 29, have decided to part ways. It has been reported that the fitness trainer has filed for divorce from the star, and the reasons behind their split are said to be heartbreaking.
