She Spent Years Chained and Alone… Then She Discovered a Toy
For years, Violet knew only one thing.
A chain.
She lived outside, tied down and forgotten, with almost no chance to experience the world beyond the small space she had been given.
Her life wasn’t supposed to be this way.

In December 2016, a passerby came across Violet and five other dogs in Miguel County, New Mexico.
All of them were chained.
All of them had been neglected.
And Violet’s condition immediately showed just how long she had been suffering.
Her neck had been badly rubbed and irritated by the heavy chain.
She was dangerously thin.
Her skin had been damaged by the harsh New Mexico sun.
And she had been left to survive without the care she desperately needed.
Someone couldn’t simply walk away.
The Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico was alerted, and the county sheriff’s department became involved.
Soon, help finally arrived.
Violet and the other dogs were freed.
But rescuing her from the chain was only the beginning.
She was taken to a veterinary clinic, where the rescuers discovered that her condition was even worse than they had first realized.
Violet was suffering from flystrike — a painful and dangerous condition in which fly larvae feed on damaged skin.
After years of being neglected, her body had become a reflection of everything she had endured.
But she was finally in the hands of people who cared.
She was treated.
She was fed.
She was protected from the sun.
And, perhaps most importantly, she was finally allowed to discover what life could be like without a chain around her neck.
At first, Violet was understandably nervous.
People were still unfamiliar to her.

After spending so much of her life confined and neglected, she didn’t immediately know how to trust.

She simply needed what every dog should have had from the beginning.
A safe home.

And someone who would finally see her as a member of the family.
