A mom was shocked to discover that her mother-in-law had switched her baby’s formula when she was on a trip.

The original poster (OP) shared their story on Reddit and explained that she had to leave for a few days, so her mother-in-law came and stayed with her young baby. However, when she got home from her trip, she was surprised to see that there was a different brand of formula in the cabinet.

“She bought a ton of it and said it was a better brand for the baby,” OP wrote. “My baby was doing great on the formula he was on, a standard formula probably the majority of parents use, and he pediatrician confirmed he had 0 problems.”

OP said that her husband told her she should be thankful because his mom bought them a ton of formula. But instead, she feels “undermined as a mother.” She added that she doesn’t know why her mother-in-law would risk her baby having troubles switching formula when he was doing well on the one he was on.

“I feel like my opinion as a mother just doesn’t matter and there was no reason for all of this,” OP wrote. “Feeling like a failure because I couldn’t breastfeed in the first place isn’t helping my emotions in this situation. I love that formula exists and he’s happy with it but I have some postpartum guilt on top of everything.”

In her comments, OP was told by many to just switch back to her baby’s old formula.

“Switch it back and tell her she won’t be needed to watch your child anymore,” one person wrote. “Tell [her] do not undermine me as a parent as that’s what you’ve both done to me and I won’t stand for it.”

Another person told OP that her mother-in-law was out of line and she should feel empowered to cut off her “unsupervised alone time” with the baby.

“MIL is not a pediatrician or your baby’s parent, she was thoroughly out of line and your husband is wrong to back her up,” another said. “No you should NOT be grateful and he should have ripped her a new one for overstepping. What if the baby had had an allergic reaction? No more unsupervised alone time with your baby anymore for untrustworthy MIL.”

A third said that it was an overstep by OP’s mother-in-law and that her husband needs to understand it was a “power play.”

“This is a major overstep. What if baby had a reaction or stomach issues with the new formula,” they wrote. “Your spouse needs to understand that the baby could have ended up in ER. This was a power play on her part and your husband is falling for it.”
