A woman is asking for advice after she and her husband can’t agree about screen time for their kids.
The original poster (OP) shared their story on Reddit and explained that she and her husband are in a “major disagreement” about their teenagers’ screen time usage on their phones. OP said her husband thinks their kids should have a maximum of two hours per day with no exceptions, but OP said there are situations in which she’s okay with her kids having more screen time.
She explained that one of the major problems with this disagreement is that her husband travels for work two to three weeks out of the month. OP also added that her husband has other hobbies that take him away from home on the weekend, leaving her home “99% of the time.”

OP said that if she’s the one at home with the kids most of the time, she feels like she should be the one to manage screen time as she sees fit. However, her husband has been disagreeing with her and the two have been fighting for many hours.
She continued, saying that her kids are really busy and involved in a lot of activities, so they don’t have much downtime anyway. OP said if they have a day where they don’t have much going on, she doesn’t have a problem with them using their phones more. As long as their homework and chores are done, she thinks it’s fine.
In her comments, many agreed with OP and also said it depends on what kind of screen time it is.
“I would agree with you, if they are busy and active, high screen time makes sense,” said one person. “Only thing I would add is that it also depends on what the screen time is for? Playing video games is different than scrolling through TikTok.”
“Documentary vs YouTube of Mr beast. Take into account what is being consumed as a variable in the calculation of time allotment,” they added.

Another person said that in their house, the person who has to enforce the rules is the one who gets to make them.
“In our house, the person who makes the stringent rules is the one who is responsible for upholding the rules. If he isn’t there to make sure that the rules are being followed, he doesn’t make the rules,” the commenter wrote.
“This is absolutely something where I would tell him, we can follow that when you’re home, when you’re not, it is up to my discretion,” they continued. “And when he’s home and starts getting upset about the phone time, tell him that he can take the phones away. Then direct them to him when they complain.”
A third said that if screen time was that important to OP’s husband, then he can be home to enforce the rules.
“If it’s important to him then he needs to enforce it himself. He’s not your manager,” they wrote. “He doesn’t get to dictate how you parent the kids while he’s gone the majority of the time. Tell him that it sounds like he needs to be home more so that he can parent his children instead of ordering you around.”
