WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Teddy the comfort dog’s third birthday was filled with time in the sun, belly rubs and plenty of stuffed animals — but the toys weren’t for him.
The University of Hartford celebrated Teddy’s birthday on Tuesday with Teddies for Teddy, a campaign that collected stuffed animals to be donated to Connecticut Children’s.
Teddy, who joined the university last year, responds to mental health calls and visits homesick students.
“We try to make the kids feel at home, let them know that we have a dog here,” said Mike Calderon, a public safety officer and Teddy’s human partner. “We have Teddy. We’re here for comfort, for wellness, for support. If they want to talk to us, spend time with us, we’re here for them.”
