The 9-5 singer is mourning the loss of her husband Carl
Every time Dolly Parton’s social media team shares a new glamour shot of the Queen of Country fans hold their breath.
In the days since her beloved husband Carl Dean passed away in early March, Dolly’s posts have taken on a heightened significance. On July 28, when Dolly, 79, appeared in a softly filtered portrait surrounded by floating pink orbs, some followers feared the worst before they even read the caption.
The image, which showed Dolly’s trademark honey‑blonde hair framing a radiant smile, was instantly recognisable as one of her signature snapshots. The caption read simply “The magic is inside you. There ain’t no crystal ball.”
It was the kind of uplifting message Dolly fans have come to expect from the “9 to 5” singer. Yet for many the emotional wounds of 2025 are still fresh. Dolly’s husband of more than six decades, Carl Dean, died on March 3 at the age of 82. His passing prompted an outpouring of sympathy around the globe.
Within minutes of the July 28 post, comments began to flood in. “Terrified every time a Dolly photo is on my timeline,” one Instagram user wrote. Another fan admitted “my heart dropped at first” before realising Dolly had not actually been taken ill.
A third fan left a direct plea for Dolly’s handlers: “Dear Dolly Social Media team… We already lost Ozzy only a week ago… don’t scare us like this.” Some even confessed they assumed the photo was part of an obituary. “This really looks like an obituary photo,” one follower posted.
“It’s a pretty typical post for Dolly,” another fan pointed out, recognising the singer’s habit of pairing a glamorous portrait with a positive motto. Yet the mere sight of Dolly’s face on the feed feels laden with worry. In recent months every new post has brought both relief and a moment of panic. “My timeline flashed her picture and I thought it was bad news,” shared one devoted listener.
Dolly herself has addressed the fragility of life and career on the Khloé in Wonderland podcast. She revealed that her songwriting process has ground to a halt since Carl’s death.
“I can’t do it right now because I got so many other things that I can’t afford the luxury of, you know, of getting emotional right now,” she admitted. The country icon went on to say that when the time is right she hopes to write again. “I’ll write something else, though, if it comes. I’m just putting that all on hold.”
Just days after sharing the sad news Dolly unveiled her first song since Carl’s death. Titled “If You Hadn’t Been There,” the ballad is a tender tribute to the man she married when she was just 18 years old.
In a letter to her fans she explained: “I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old. We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story and I dedicate this song to him.”
Dolly Parton puts career ‘on hold’ amid major heartbreak
Dolly Parton opened up about working through her grief following the death of her husband of 59 years, Carl Dean, in March.
The iconic performer revealed that his passing has profoundly affected her songwriting ability, and brings up too many raw emotions.
Living with loss
Speaking on the Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, Dolly shared that she had put her recording career “on hold” as it made her too emotional to write about her late husband.
“I can’t do it right now ’cause I got so many other things that I can’t afford the luxury of, you know, of getting emotional right now,” she said on the podcast.
After revealing that her songwriting had “stalled”, she added: “I’ll write something else, though, if it comes. I’m just putting that all on hold.”
Carl passed away in March aged 82, prompting an outpouring of love for the country star.
“Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He is survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie,” she shared in a social media statement.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time.”
Just days later, Dolly released a song dedicated to her fiercely private husband, titled “If You Hadn’t Been There”.
“I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old,” she told her fans. “We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end.”
“They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him,” she added.
Moving on
Despite putting her songwriting career on hold, Dolly is preparing to return to Las Vegas for a limited run of shows at Caesar’s Palace in December, 32 years after her last Vegas residency. Dolly: Live in Las Vegas will feature six performances running from December 4-13.
“To say I’m excited would be an understatement,” the “Jolene” singer said in a statement. “I haven’t worked [in] Vegas in years and I’ve always loved singing there. I’m looking so forward to the shows in The Colosseum at Caesar’s and I hope you are as well. See you there!”
In the wake of her announcement, Dolly shared that she still holds Carl close to her heart and is determined to keep their traditions alive. “We got married down in Ringgold, Georgia,” she told Fox News. “And we would always go down to Ringgold in and around our anniversary every year since we were married.”
She continued: “And so I went down there the other day on our anniversary. And they put a big plaque up in the yard of that church where we got married. It talks about us getting married there.”
“So anyway, that’s where I spent my anniversary, our first – my first – our anniversary without him, the first one. So I thought, well, I have to go back and just take a picture on the same steps at that same church,” she added.
Dolly brought their wedding rings along for the emotional moment, sharing that it was “just so sweet” and made her feel that Carl “was there with me”.

The country icon’s happy career news comes after she revealed she is keeping her husband, Carl Dean’s memory alive following his death in March 2025.
Dolly recently made the emotional decision to honor a tradition she and Carl had throughout their marriage – marking their anniversary at the church where they were married.
The “Jolene” singer revealed that she and Carl would visit the church where they tied the knot every year on their anniversary, but this was the first time she made the trip by herself.
“We got married down in Ringgold, Georgia,” Dolly told Fox News. “And we would always go down to Ringgold in and around our anniversary every year since we were married.”
She continued: “And so I went down there the other day on our anniversary. And they put a big plaque up in the yard of that church where we got married. It talks about us getting married there.

Despite the swirling emotions on the day, Dolly said she felt like Carl “was there with me”.
Dolly Parton opens up about suffering ‘loneliness’ after husband Carl Dean’s passing
Dolly Parton got candid about how she is moving on from her husband Carl Dean’s tragic passing in March after she revealed he had been “ill for quite a while”.
The country legend spoke to The Independent about finding peace without Carl by her side after they had been married for almost 60 years.
Grieving his loss
“I really feel his presence,” she told the publication. “I just try to go on, because I know I have to.”
“And he was ill for quite a while, and part of me was at peace that he was at peace and not suffering anymore. But that still doesn’t make up for the loss and the loneliness of it,” she continued. Dolly then explained how her faith was helping her come to terms with his death, sharing, “I truly believe that I’m going to see him again someday.”
“And I see him every day in my memories and in my heart, and in all the things that we used to do and all the things that we’ve built together,” she added. “You just kind of have to learn to kind of make new plans – but that’s the hardest part.”
Working through it
Since his death, the “Jolene” singer has been working steadily while dealing with her grief. “I just think that I’ve always had dreams and I’m always working,” she said. “My husband understood that. Carl knew that better than anybody and he was all about it. He was very proud of me.”
Dolly added that she had decided to “take all of that energy” and “put that back into other things” in order to “keep him ever-present in everything that I do.”
She recently celebrated the 40th anniversary season of her theme park, Dollywood. The 79-year-old also released a song soon after Carl’s passing titled “If You Hadn’t Been There”, which she dedicated to her late husband.
“Like all great love stories, they never end,” she wrote on social media. “They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him.”
Longtime lovebirds
Dolly and Carl first met at a laundromat in Nashville on the day that she moved to the city in 1964.
They were married in Georgia two years later, and Carl was happy to give his wife the spotlight while he worked on his asphalt business.
While they never had kids, they were proud of their army of nieces and nephews, and Dolly is a loving godmother to singer Miley Cyrus.
The Grammy winner announced her husband’s passing via Instagram, writing: “Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He is survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie.”
The statement continued: “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time.”

Dolly Parton Reveals She’s Putting New Music ‘on Hold’ After Her Husband’s Death: ‘I Won’t Finish It’
The country star’s husband Carl Dean died in March 2025
Dolly Parton is waiting to pay tribute to her late husband, Carl Dean, with new music.
The 79-year-old singer appeared on Khloé Kardashian’s podcast, Khloé in Wonder Land, on Wednesday, July 9, and spoke about how her writing process has been impacted by the death of her husband.
Parton and Dean were married for almost 60 years before his death in March 2025. Since then, Parton has sparingly made comments about him and their long-lasting relationship.
But, during Kardashian’s podcast, the TV personality, 41, asked if Parton ever suffers from writer’s block or has begun writing a song without finishing it. Parton replied by remarking that her husband recently died, and “[There are] several things I have wanted to start, but I can’t do it.”

“I will later,” she continued. “I’m just coming up with such wonderful beautiful ideas, but I think I won’t finish it. I can’t do it right now, because I got so many other things.”
“I can’t afford the luxury of, you know, getting that emotional right now,” she said. “There are times like that, things like that, that will stall you a little bit. But I’ll write something else though, if it comes.”
“I’m just putting that all on hold,” she added.
At the start of the summer, the country legend revealed that she honored Dean for what would have been their 59th anniversary by visiting the Ringgold, Ga., church where they were married on May 30, 1966. Parton revealed how her “faith” has helped her cope with the loss of Dean.
“We would always go down to Ringgold so — in and around our anniversary every year since we were married,” she told FOX News’ America Reports. The legendary singer recalled how she and Dean used to enjoy a picnic together for their anniversary.
“So, anyway, that’s where I spent my anniversary, our first — my first — our anniversary without him, the first one,” she continued. “So I thought, well, I have got to go back and just take a picture on that — on the same steps at that same church.” Parton felt like “he was there with me.”
“I am a person of faith, even though I lost him on this earthly plane, and I will miss him every day, having to learn new patterns, new habits, but knowing that I will see him again and knowing that he’s in God’s arms now and not mine,” she told the outlet.
Parton shared that her late husband is “still in my heart and in my memories.”
