A woman checked her pet camera during the workday, after recently rescuing a canine named Charlie, and what she saw her black Labrador doing with their newly adopted rescue left her in tears.
“Our shelter dog, Charlie, was days away from being euthanized at a kill shelter in Oklahoma,” owner Mare told Newsweek via TikTok. “So our local shelter went and picked him up and brought him back to where we live in Illinois.”
Charlie spent about a week at the animal shelter before Mare and her husband arrived looking to adopt another dog. He was the first one they brought out to them, as he was not adjusting well to being in the kennel. The couple instantly fell in love with him, welcoming him into the family along with their black Labrador, Rambo.
Because both owners had to work the next day, they set up a camera to check in on the dogs, Mare said. In a December 23 TikTok video posted to @mare_ewing, Mare captured the moment her Lab took it upon himself to comfort Charlie—gently sniffing his bed before climbing in beside him. The pair then curled up together, waiting for their humans to return.

Mare said she checked the camera every hour to make sure the dogs were settling in, and was stunned to see Rambo naturally take on an older-sibling role.
“I couldn’t wait to get home to see them,” she said. “Now, they are best friends!”
Rambo has continued showing Charlie the ropes of life in a home filled with love. In another TikTok video, the Lab tried teaching Charlie how to use the doggy door. He ran outside and repeatedly poked his head back through the flap, trying to coax Charlie to follow—though the lesson is still a work in progress.
