Diana Reportedly Wanted Harry to Be King Over William Due to 1 Never-Been-Revealed Reason: ‘When His Mother Was Still Alive…’

What did she say?

Princess Diana passed away long enough ago that, at this point, we don’t really know what she would have thought of most of the things going on with the British royal family today. They all seemed so far-fetched almost 30 years ago, when she passed away. But one thing we do know is that she was a devoted mother who wanted the best for her two kids, Prince William and Prince Harry.

And according to a friend, she was even preparing Harry to be king. This was reportedly due to the fact that, as much as Prince William was aware of his duty from a very early age, he was a little apprehensive about stepping into the responsibility.

Hoàng tử William qua các năm

Veteran royal writer Richard Kay recounted how Diana felt on the Daily Mail‘s Palace Confidential podcast. “I think William has been a bit of a surprise. He was a shy young man,” Kay said. “Certainly, when his mother was still alive, she would tell me that she never really thought that William wanted the ‘top job,’ as she called it. The idea that he would one day wear the crown.”

“She, in her mind, was preparing the way for the possibility that it would be Harry who succeeded his father,” he added. “She had a nickname for Harry: She used to call him ‘Good King Harry’ — a throwback to medieval days.”

Of course, Prince William these days doesn’t seem like he is in any way unsure about his future, and Prince Harry is living in the United States. Two things Princess Diana probably could not have predicted.

Kay also brought up how, back in the day, people speculated that Princess Margaret would be better suited for the throne than Princess Elizabeth. That also changed later. “The consensus was ‘we got the right one.’ And, I think we got the right one in William as Prince of Wales,” he said.

Kay also spoke about how William has “grown into” the role. “What I quite like about him is that he is coming up with some quite different ways to approach royalty,” Kay added. “He recognizes that some of the aspects of modern monarchy is antediluvian and doesn’t resonate well with the modern public, and I think he is aware that he’s going to have to make some big changes to ensure its survival.”

Kay and Dana reportedly became close friends after he began covering the royal beat, with the princess privately sharing things with Kay to get her perspective out.

Prince Harry and Prince William are said to be estranged these days and have reportedly not met in person for years. Harry recently met up with his father, King Charles, and there are rumors that the two will meet up again when the king visits the US for a state visit in April. There are reportedly no plans for the brothers to meet at that time, even though William is reportedly also coming on the state visit alongside his father.

Prince William is paying tribute to Princess Diana on Mother’s Day in the U.K.

The Prince of Wales, 43, marked Mothering Sunday on March 15 by sharing a photo taken during his childhood on Instagram. The snap taken in a field of flowers at Highgrove in 1984 showed Prince William, then age two, holding hands with Princess Diana, who would’ve turned 65 on July 1.

“Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W,” he captioned the photo from his private collection.

Prince William was 15 when his mother died in 1997.

As families across Britain honored mothers and maternal figures, King Charles and Queen Camilla also shared a tribute on Instagram.

“Wishing Mothers everywhere, and those who might be missing their Mums today, a restful Mothering Sunday,” they captioned photos of Queen Elizabeth II and a snap of Queen Camilla with her late mother Rosalind Shand.

Princess Kate, who shares Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, with Prince William, didn’t post a public Mother’s Day tribute on the Instagram account she shares with the Prince of Wales.

However, she has long spoken about how central motherhood is to her life — something that has become even more meaningful following her cancer diagnosis and amid her recovery.

In 2025, the princess used the holiday to reflect on the healing power of nature during a difficult year.

“Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary,” she wrote in an Instagram post at the time, alongside a video of peaceful outdoor scenes.

“This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognize how our bond with the natural world can help not only nurture our inner selves, but remind us too of the role we play within the rich tapestry of life,” she continued, concluding the post with. “C.”

The nature video came a year after Kate made headlines when she released a new photo taken by William that showed her seated in a chair surrounded by the couple’s three children.

The image received extra attention as it marked the first time seeing the princess in several weeks, as she was recovering from a “planned abdominal surgery” that took place in January 2024. However, less than 12 hours after the photo was shared, major agencies began pulling the photo due to suspicions of manipulation.

A spokesperson for the Associated Press released a statement to The Telegraph, saying, “The photo shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand,” while others noticed alignment issues on clothing as well as blurred areas on the image.

Kate publicly addressed the Photoshop controversy a day later, saying in a statement shared on social media, “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day.”

Shortly after the holiday of 2024, Kate revealed she was receiving treatment for cancer, contributing to her absence from the public eye. In September 2024, she announced that her chemotherapy had ended and, in January 2025, Kate revealed that she was in remission.

Kate’s focus on family life has remained clear even as she gradually returned to public duties amid her recovery. Throughout it all, sources close to the royal household say that maintaining a sense of normalcy for her children has remained a top priority for both Kate and William.

Despite their growing roles within the royal family, the couple are known for being hands-on parents — often doing school drop-offs and pickups at Lambrook School themselves and regularly appearing on the sidelines at their children’s sporting events and school activities.

Kate recently returned to public duties alongside Prince William, including a visit along the River Thames on March 12 where she even stepped behind the counter at a market stall to try her hand as a barista.

During the outing, she also shared a rare personal reflection on her health, revealing that she has been more mindful about alcohol consumption since her cancer diagnosis.

Looking ahead, Kate and William are set to return to a major royal stage in the coming week when they help King Charles host the President of Nigeria for a state visit beginning March 18.

Princess Diana Was Preparing Prince Harry to Be King, Believing ‘Shy’ Prince William Didn’t Want ‘Top Job,’ Friend Says

Richard Kay, a journalist and friend of Diana’s, said the late Princess of Wales would call her younger son “Good King Harry”

Princess Diana thought she should also prepare Prince Harry to be king one day, according to her friend.

As the older brother, Prince William, now 43, was aware of his destiny. However, he was also shy and somewhat reticent about his future royal role, something his mother sensed and appreciated.

Her confidante and friend, the veteran royal writer Richard Kay, recounted how Diana felt on the Daily Mail‘s Palace Confidential podcast.

But the veteran royal writer went on, “Things haven’t worked out like that, and I think we are all rather grateful that they haven’t.”

He raised the subject of how some people used to speculate about Princess Margaret being better suited for the role of monarch than Princess Elizabeth.

“The consensus was ‘we got the right one.’ And, I think we got the right one in William as Prince of Wales,” he said.

Kay noted how Prince William has “grown into” his role and embraced that destiny, with his wife, Kate Middleton, by his side.

The journalist and Princess Diana became close friends after he began covering the royal beat and reporting on her life. She would brief him privately when she wanted her perspective conveyed in the often-critical newspapers of the time, and the two even went to the movies together.

Diana died in August 1997 at age 36 following a car crash in Paris, and Kay has spoken before about how he and the princess shared a phone call on the previous evening.

In his interview for Palace Confidential, Kay was looking back on a 40-year career, much of which has been reporting on the royal family.

Prince William and Prince Harry, who are estranged, are last known to have reunited in August 2024 at the memorial service for their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, held at St. Mary’s Church in Norfolk. However, sources revealed the brothers kept their distance, sitting apart and avoiding interaction throughout the event.

The brothers came together when they unveiled a statue of their late mother in July 2021, on the day that would have been her 60th birthday, and also reunited during the funeral events for Queen Elizabeth in September 2022. However, when Harry was visiting Britain and some of his charities in September 2025, the princes were only eight miles apart at one point and did not meet up.

Kate Middleton and Prince William Join King Charles at Biggest Royal Gathering Since Ex-Prince Andrew’s Arrest

  • Kate Middleton and Prince William stepped out with King Charles for the first time since ex-Prince Andrew’s arrest in February
  • The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on March 9
  • The King was also joined by Queen Camilla and other royals for the annual service

Kate Middleton and Prince William showed their support for King Charles at the biggest public gathering of royals since the former Prince Andrew was arrested.

On March 9, the Prince and Princess of Wales attended the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in London, the couple’s wedding day venue in April 2011. They arrived in coordinating blue ensembles, with Kate wearing a Catherine Walker coat and matching hat.

They joined King Charles, Queen CamillaPrincess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester for the service.

Prince Albert of Monaco also joined the congregation.

Inside, the royals greeted each other warmly, including a curtsy and a kiss on the cheek for King Charles from his daughter-in-law, Princess Kate.

In other years, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor might have attended. But, after he stepped back from royal duties in the wake of his links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2019, he did not attend many official royal engagements. However, he continued to join the royals at family events such as funerals and holiday church outings.

In October 2025, King Charles announced that he was stripping Andrew’s royal titles and honors. In addition, Andrew would have to give up his lease at Royal Lodge, the residence where he’s lived for many years.

Then came the bombshell news of Andrew’s arrest on Feb. 19, his 66th birthday, at his temporary home of Wood Farm at the royal family’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk, over allegations of misconduct in public office. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

At Westminster Abbey on March 9, anti-monarchy protestors gathered outside the service with signs alluding to Andrew’s scandals. Some held letters that spelled out “What did you know?” while another read “Charles, what are you hiding?”

Inside, the 1,800-strong congregation at the Commonwealth Day service heard an address from former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner, who is a Royal Commonwealth Society Ambassador, while dancer Oti Mabuse gave a reflection. There was also a poem from Selina Tusitala Marsh, the inaugural Commonwealth Poet Laureate.

There was also the world premiere of the Commonwealth Symphony, composed by Rekesh Chauhan and a collaboration between the Royal Ballet School and Sapnay Entertainments Ltd., which unveiled a cross-cultural partnership between classical ballet and Bollywood.

The service brought together government representatives, young people and leaders from the creative community, showcasing how the Commonwealth — which comprises the U.K. and the family of 55 other nations and 2.7 billion people — can harmonize its diverse voices.

A traditional Scottish Ceilidh band and the Melodians Steel Drum Orchestra also contributed their unique talent to the service.

Although the BBC traditionally broadcasts the Commonwealth Day service, the network did not do so this year for the first time since 1989. Instead, an episode of Escape to the Country, a long-running reality TV show that follows prospective homeowners leaving city life, aired.

“Our decision not to broadcast the Commonwealth Day Ceremony in the same way we’ve done in previous years reflects the difficult choices we have to make in light of our funding challenges,” the BBC said in a statement, per Hello! magazine. “We can confirm BBC News plans to cover the service across its platforms, including the BBC One bulletins and rolling news channel.”

King Charles also releases a message in honor of Commonwealth Day, with this year’s address focusing on being a “force for good” amid the world’s challenges.

“We join together on this Commonwealth Day at a time of great challenge and great possibility,” the King says in a preview of the full speech released over the weekend. “Across our world, communities and nations face the increasing pressures of conflict, climate change and rapid transformation. Yet it is often in such testing moments that the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth is most clearly revealed.”

He continues, “Working together, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to stand as a force for good — grounded in community, committed to the kind of restorative sustainability that has a return on investment, enriched by culture, steadfast in its care for our planet, and united in friendship and in the service of its people.”

Kate Middleton’s Pregnancy with Prince George Was Initially Kept Secret for This Reason, Court Hears

‘Mail on Sunday’ editor Charlotte Griffiths claimed in court that she learned of Princess Kate’s pregnancy before the palace’s official announcement

NEED TO KNOW

  • Journalist Charlotte Griffiths claimed that she chose not to report Kate Middleton’s pregnancy with Prince George, now 12, to maintain boundaries between her personal and professional life
  • Griffiths testified in Prince Harry’s lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited, denying the use of private investigators or phone hacking
  • She detailed her social connections with royals, including attending events with Prince Harry and learning of Kate’s pregnancy privately

Mail on Sunday editor claimed in court that she chose not to scoop the news of Kate Middleton‘s pregnancy with Prince George after learning about the news at a private social gathering.

In a witness statement released on March 10, journalist Charlotte Griffiths made the claim as she gave evidence in a lawsuit filed by Prince Harry and several other high-profile figures against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). The claimants are accusing the powerful publisher of unlawful information gathering, and Griffiths said in her testimony that she “never used a private investigator or search agent.”

ANL is the publisher of several influential titles, including the Mail on Sunday, where Griffiths has worked since 2008. Her title there is now editor at large, and she opened up about her decision not to break the news of Princess Kate’s pregnancy with her son Prince George, now 12, before the palace announcement.

Griffiths said that she established her society contacts when she attended school in west London and at the University of Leeds, “studying there at the same time as Chelsy Davy and continuing to socialize in similar high society circles ever since.” Chelsy dated Prince Harry in the 2000s, and Griffiths said she met Harry through friends. She alleged that it was also through her social network that she was invited to a “country weekend” that Prince William and Kate Middleton were also expected to attend in the late fall of 2012.

“Friends invited me to a country weekend in the last week of November/ first weekend of December 2012, which both Prince William and Kate Middleton were also expected to attend. William arrived solo on the Friday and explained that Kate was suffering with morning sickness,” Griffiths said in her witness statement. “The fact that she was pregnant with their first child would have been big news, and St. James’ Palace only confirmed it the following Monday because she had to be admitted to hospital. I decided to keep it to myself.”

At the time, the journalist was working for the Mail‘s Diary column and said her editor, Geordie Greig, “was quite annoyed” when he found out that she knew the scoop but didn’t report it to him immediately, as they would have broken the news before the palace announcement days later. (On Dec. 3, 2012, the palace announced that Kate was expecting her first child and was admitted to London’s King Edward VII Hospital for hyperemesis gravidarum, or severe morning sickness. She was discharged four days later, and Prince George was born in July 2013.)

Griffiths maintained that the intel was “information I had learned at a private event and that I was attending in a personal capacity, so I treated it as such. I missed a scoop to maintain my friendships and because I knew where the line was and had decided not to cross it. There are many similar examples I could give, but the point is that this is a principle that I have always maintained and continue to abide by.”

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge (L) and his wife Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge leave the King Edward VII hospital in central London, on December 6, 2012.
Prince William and Kate Middleton leave the King Edward VII hospital in London on Dec. 6, 2012.

Griffiths elsewhere elaborated on separating her private and professional life.

“I draw a line between my professional and own personal social life (as compared to my attending events as a journalist). If I am at an event working and chatting in a social context, I make clear that I am asking questions as a journalist by telling the person that I work for the Mail on Sunday. If I’m attending a private dinner with friends and am told something in confidence, then I treat it as such,” she said.

The account about Princess Kate’s morning sickness was not the only royal encounter Griffiths shared in her witness statement, as she also claimed that she attended a party that Prince Harry started in June 2012.

Griffiths said that call records show a 2:50 a.m. phone call and three texts between her and Harry on June 9, 2012, claiming, “I have never hacked or tapped a phone” and “The records I have been shown had nothing to do with a story or my job.”

As mentioned earlier in her testimony, Griffiths said that she “socialized in some of the same circles as the younger royals, having gone to Leeds University with some of their group and attended the same parties in Ibiza, and continued to spend time with those people after moving to London in my twenties. Our social life at the time tended to revolve around night clubs and house parties.”

The journalist said that Harry had friended her on Facebook and sent her his number in 2011, but that she “did not know Prince Harry particularly well and do not remember messaging him often.”

Elaborating on the context of their June 2012 communication, Griffiths said, “I do remember that around that date I had been out at a club night with our mutual friend — Arthur — who then invited me back to his house for an afterparty. Arthur hadn’t made it home by the time that I arrived but told me Prince Harry was staying at the flat and that the party had already started under Prince Harry’s watch. He told me that Prince Harry would let me in if I made it there first.”

“The music was loud, and they didn’t hear the doorbell, so Arthur advised me to call and text to be let in. That particular night stuck in my mind as I remember it was around the time of the Trooping of the Colour, and we all thought it was quite funny that Prince Harry had stayed up all night and said he had to go to that or something related in the morning,” she continued, referencing the British Army’s annual military parade to commemorate the monarch’s official birthday.

“I remember joking with another friend who was at the party that we should go along to watch, and so I think my text to him in the morning would have either been to see if he made it or to tell him that we weren’t coming as we had only got to bed in the early hours of the morning,” she said. “I don’t think I ever called or texted him again.”

In 2012, Trooping the Colour was held on Saturday, June 16, making June 9 — a Saturday — one week before the celebration.

In January, Prince Harry countered the Mail’s claim that their reporters were part of his inner circle of friends when he testified against ANL in court in London.

The publisher claimed that the prince contacted Griffiths using a Facebook profile with the name “Mr. Mischief,” an allegation that Harry denied. The Duke of Sussex said that he “never used the name Mr. Mischief” and had “no idea” if he had ever messaged Griffiths.

It was also claimed that Harry and Griffiths had met at a house party on the Spanish island of Ibiza, but Harry replied, “The only time I have been to Ibiza is with my wife and son.” (Harry and Meghan Markle visited Ibiza in 2019, with their son, Prince Archie, now 6.)

The Duke of Sussex claimed the only time he ever met Griffiths was at a house party thrown by his friend, Arthur Landon, and immediately cut contact with her once he learned she was a journalist.

“My social circles were not leaky,” he insisted in court.

Prince Harry’s lawsuit against ANL is his last in a series of lawsuits against the British media, following years of litigation over alleged, unlawful tabloid practices. ANL has strenuously denied the allegations lodged against it, arguing that its reporting was sourced legitimately.

The trial began in London’s High Court on Jan. 19 and is due to conclude this month.
