Hoda Kotb has been filling Savannah Guthrie’s shoes since the Today show host’s mom Nancy was first reported missing on February 1. However, as the search operation moves towards its fifth week, the network is reportedly eyeing a longer stint—and making some tentative long-term decisions. According to People, Kotb’s Today show future has been extended, marking her first extended return since leaving her co-hosting gig early last year.

Kotb, who retired from the Today show in January 2025, has been back in her co-anchor seat opposite Craig Melvin since February 6. And as the search for the 84-year-old continues, People confirmed on February 25 that the former TV personality will keep holding down the fort as Guthrie takes an extended leave of absence from her post.

However, according to Page Six, there are no official plans for Kotb to return full time or for Guthrie to quit the show. “At the moment, we’re taking things week by week, day by day. Hoda has been a steady hand, and calm presence for the staff,” the publication revealed they were told by NBC insiders. The sources also revealed that while morale is low in the office due to the crew’s close relationship with Guthrie and her family, they’re trying to keep things going like normal as much as possible.

“Everyone, from top down is focused on supporting Savannah and her family, and also doing the best job possible, because that’s what she would do. She is just so missed by everyone,” they added.

“We still believe in a miracle. We still believe that she can come home,” she shared in the tearful clip. “Hope against hope. As my sister says, we are blowing on the embers of hope.”

Guthrie continued,“We also know that she may be lost, she may already be gone. She may already have gone home to the Lord she loves and is dancing in heaven with her mom and her dad and with her beloved brother Pierce and with our daddy. And if this is what is to be, then we will accept it, but we need to know where she is. We need her to come home.”
