Tom Selleck—who starred on Blue Bloods for 14 seasons from 2010 to 2024—admitted the cast agreed to a significant pay cut in attempts to keep the CBS series on the air.

Tom Selleck is still feeling blue about how his longest-running series came to an end.

The Blue Bloods alum shared that the show’s cast—which included costars Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Len Cariou—had agreed to do “all sorts of things to keep the show going” before it was canceled ahead of its 14th and final season, including accepting a lower salary.

“The real truth to that is in the last year of [Blue Bloods], at our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back,” Tom explained during a live taping of Ted Danson’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast published July 28. “We’d already taken a 25 percent cut in salary.”

And the group of actors—many of whom had been working together since the series’ premiere in 2010—thought the 2023 dismissal from their “labor of love” was premature.

“Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on,” the Magnum P.I. star continued. “That’s hard to get. It may be some kind of record to have the same cast intact for that length of time.”

Aside from splitting up the longstanding “family,” Selleck also noted that the cancellation was especially “frustrating” considering the cop procedural’s enduring success, even through its last season.

According to the 81-year-old, “Out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods was number six in our 15th year.”

Despite reiterating that the series—which followed New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (played by Selleck) and his family tree of law enforcement officials—was cut short, Selleck still spoke highly of the experience.

“A lot of shows become miserable to work on,” the Broadway performer contrasted his experience on Blue Bloods. “You get a lot of egos and ‘I’m not coming out of my dressing room until he’s coming out’ and it’s miserable.”

According to the source, the Magnum, P.I. alum had previously lost around 15 pounds by cutting back on “grease binges” at fast food restaurants. However, as he struggles to revive his career, “that willpower seems to have flown out the window,” the source tells Globe. “There’s a fear he may be digging his own grave.”

The Hollywood legend, 81, starred on Blue Bloods for 14 years before its cancellation in 2024 — a decision he was vocal about disagreeing with.

“I’m kind of frustrated,” Selleck told TV Insider at the time. “My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.”

As Globe previously reported, Selleck felt extra betrayed when former costar Donnie Wahlberg scored a spinoff, Boston Blue.

“There was talk of Donnie helping him land a spot on the spinoff,” the source notes. “But it didn’t go anywhere and Tom’s taken it pretty badly.”

While TV Insider reported this May that the Emmy winner signed on to host, narrate and produce Crime and Justice With Tom Selleck for History Channel, the documentary series does not have a release date yet.

“Tom wants a lot more than that,” admits Globe’s source, who says it’s alarming just “how low his spirits are” right now. “He’s bored and in a rut, and that’s why he’s stuffing himself with junk.”
