John Stamos has been a heartthrob since his early days on General Hospital, but the only person who’s stolen his heart is his wife, Caitlin McHugh.
The Fuller Housestar married McHugh in February 2018 — two months before they welcomed their son, Billy. Stamos, who has struggled with alcohol addiction in the past, has credited his wife and son for keeping him on a “new path,” and bringing him a renewed sense of joy in life.
“They have kept me on this path because going down the road of being sober and taking care of yourself, everybody tries. Everybody does it,” Stamos exclusively told PEOPLE ahead of the release of his memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, in October 2023. “You could get going for a little while. Then it’s like, ‘I can drink again.’ So it’s staying on the path is what they mostly do for me.”
He added that though McHugh is 23 years his junior, he’s “learned a lot” from her, including broadening his political views and doing more charitable work.

“Being older with someone younger, you go, all right, you know everything and they need to listen to me. But I’m always learning something from her,” he shared. “What I love about our household with Billy is there’s always political conversations going on or charity events.”
He continued, “The other day I was listening to some political book or something. I was like, ‘I never used to care about this.’ And she said, ‘That’s because of me.’ But she brightens up the house. And it’s not just political talk, it’s being a good human talk.”
So who is John Stamos’ wife? Here’s everything to know about Caitlin McHugh and her relationship with the actor.
She is an actress
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-caitlin-mchugh-2-07954865d945449fa43e65c2e158bc58.jpg)
McHugh made her acting debut in 2007’s I Am Legend and appeared in a handful of episodes of various network TV shows since, including Castle, The Vampire Diaries and Switched at Birth.
She also worked on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2011 opposite Stamos.
“I played a guy who was so egotistical that he thought he should spread his progeny, so he had like 60 kids or something,” Stamos told PEOPLE in 2017. “He was poking holes in condoms and stuff. And Caitlin, ironically, was one of the girls that I was trying to fool and have a baby with.”
She has her own podcast
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-son-billy-1-5c92b2c7571241df96ff4f763420f93c.jpg)
In addition to her acting career, McHugh hosts a podcast called How Can I Help?, where she “finds nonprofits, businesses, and individuals who are making a positive impact in the world and she figures out how to help their causes.”
“When I grew up, my mom was really into charity and giving back and stuff, but Caitlin, she had a podcast called, How Can I Help? And tomorrow, she’s going to Tijuana to help the kids,” Stamos told PEOPLE in 2023. “I just love that in our house and I love for Billy to see that.”
She was engaged when she first met Stamos
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-caitlin-mchugh-3-bbc8b785486c4ad3bf73ac81e7f01258.jpg)
After the two met on Law & Order: SVU, Stamos wrote in his memoir that he had a “crush” on the actress and even asked her to leave her fiancé for him. Though she declined, he didn’t lose hope.
“She was in another relationship. And we just met back up again,” Stamos recalled to PEOPLE. “Her roommate was on an episode of Fuller House, and so she was in the audience. I walked in, I went, ‘Hey, are you stalking me?’ She was like, ‘No.’ … That’s why I love her. She’s like, ‘What? No. I haven’t thought of you twice.’ ”
Stamos then learned that McHugh was divorced and dating again, and he made his move. Six months later, the couple moved in together.
Stamos proposed in October 2017
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-caitlin-mchugh-4-8dac47953f324c67af0a3aa682b4c030.jpg)
Stamos proposed to McHugh in Disneyland on Oct. 23, 2017. During the elaborate proposal, the pair first watched a compilation of romantic moments from Pixar and Disney movies. He ended the display with a moment from The Little Mermaid encouraging him to “just ask the girl.”
He did indeed ask, and McHugh was quick to say yes.
“She loves Disneyland and [at the park], I got on my knee and asked her,” Stamos said. “I pulled the ring out. I don’t know how she did it, but she went to hug me and slipped her finger right in it. When the park closed, we ran around the park in our Disney onesies.”
McHugh also announced the happy news on her Instagram, posting a photo of her and Stamos kissing. “I kissed the boy and said…yes!” she wrote in the caption. “That’s what you do when the sweetest, most romantic Prince Charming treats you like a princess and asks you to be his 💍.”
The sweet proposal came after the couple learned they were expecting a baby. “The [pregnancy] happened. Then I said, I better have a ring on her finger because it’s the right thing to do, and I wanted to marry her anyway,” Stamos told PEOPLE in December 2017. “So I called her parents to ask, and it was like, ‘You better!’ “
They got married in February 2018
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-caitlin-mchugh-de7ebf64c73c44bf9359164c99ed64f1.jpg)
Just four months after getting engaged, Stamos and McHugh tied the knot on Feb. 3, 2018, in an intimate ceremony at Little Brown Church in Studio City, California. The bride wore a strapless gown with a tulle skirt.
“They exchanged wows in front of family and close friends,” a source close to the couple told PEOPLE. “It was a very touching ceremony. There were tears, but mostly smiles. John and Caitlin looked very happy.”
The night before the ceremony, however, was not as happy of an occasion as McHugh’s hotel room at the Beverly Hills Hotel was burglarized and approximately $165,000 worth of jewelry was stolen. Neither McHugh nor Stamos were in the room when the crime occurred.
She and Stamos welcomed their son shortly after their wedding
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-caitlin-mchugh-5-705f34a199174616a28ff6866ed32c87.jpg)
Stamos and McHugh announced they were expecting in December 2017, and their son, Billy, arrived on April 10, 2018.
The actor told PEOPLE in December that he “always wanted to be a dad,” but didn’t think it would happen for him. McHugh shared that Stamos’ reaction to the happy news was “priceless.”
“The look on John’s face when I told him we were pregnant was priceless,” she recalled. “It was the look of a man who has wanted a family of his own but wasn’t sure it was going to happen for him. Now it is!”
After welcoming their baby boy together, Stamos has since talked about what a joy their son is and how “mischievous” he is growing up to be.
“He’s so charming and people come up to him and say, ‘Oh, my God, you’re so handsome. You’re so charming,’ ” Stamos told PEOPLE in October 2023. “I’m like, ‘Don’t tell him.’ “
However, another kid doesn’t seem to be “in the cards” for the couple, even though they previously hoped to expand their family further, they told PEOPLE.
“By the way, [Billy’s] asked for a kid all the time, like a brother or sister. If we take three minutes of not paying attention to him, he goes crazy,” Stamos said.
“He could never deal with a sibling,” the Full House alum continued. “No, I know he couldn’t. He’d like it at first. Oh, there’s a little baby, then me. We got to deal with a kid.”
Stamos credits her for changing his life
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/john-stamos-caitlin-mchugh-6-f828bf44dfab43338679996df557faea.jpg)
McHugh greatly impacted Stamos’ life as he credits her for helping him stay sober and “straightening up [his] life” since his 2015 DUI arrest, which helped motivate him to enter treatment.
“I wasn’t deserving of it yet I think. But six years ago, I sobered up and I became a better person,” he told PEOPLE in August 2021. “And when Caitlin came around, I recognized it immediately. I said, ‘I have to be good for that to make it work.’ “
McHugh added that the two work hard to make sure they prioritize their marriage while still juggling being parents to a young child. Communication and special date nights proved to be essential for the couple, especially when their son was still a toddler.
“I forget what the magic ratio is, but I think it’s about having more positive reactions over negative,” McHugh said. “It’s nice to connect over something else — it’s not always about the kid. We’re still trying to find the balance!”
All of the sleepless nights and chaos ended up being “what I always wanted,” Stamos concluded. “My dreams came true 100 times over.”
In an Instagram post Stamos shared in honor of McHugh’s birthday in May 2024, he praised her “unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.”
“You’re a good person, Caitlin, and I’m lucky to call you my wife and partner on this journey,” he wrote. “More adventures, more dreams, more us. Here’s to you, to us, and to never settling for anything less than this amazing life we have together!”

John Stamos’ Foul-Mouthed Response To Question About Leaving His Wife For ‘Full House’ Co-Star Lori Loughlin
John Stamos didn’t mince words when addressing an inquiry from a podcast host that seemed to question his love for his wife, Caitlin McHugh.
The actor was asked whether he would ever ditch his wife for actress Lori Loughlin, with whom he has been a long-time friend.
John Stamos responded with an expletive-filled rant, in which he admitted that he remains committed to his marriage to Caitlin McHugh.
John Stamos Says There Is ‘No F-cking Way’ He Would Leave His Wife
During a recent appearance on the” Good Guys” podcast, Stamos demonstrated just how devoted he is to his wife, Caitlin McHugh, when asked a personal question about his loyalty to her.
Hosts Ben Soffer and Josh Peck had told the actor that many fans wanted to know if he would “ever leave [his] wife” for his long-time friend Loughlin, adding that it was “the biggest question” they got ahead of his appearance.
The question seemed to stem from fans’ belief that their onscreen chemistry as lovers in the ’80s series and their subsequent closeness could transition into real life.
However, Stamos shut down those speculations with an expletive, saying that there is “No f-ucking way!” that he would leave his wife. He also hit back with a comical dig at one of the hosts for raising the question.
“I’m not Mormon – do you do that with your wife? Are you a swinger?” he added, per the Daily Mail.
The Actor Says His Relationship With Lori Loughlin Is ‘Platonic’
Shortly after, Stamos then clarified that his relationship with Loughlin was “platonic” and has been so since they became friends on the set of the series.
Still, he did admit that there was one time he thought they crossed the line and made out.
“I always thought that we made out on some ride at Disneyland – I’ve known her since the early ’80s,” the actor told his hosts.
His recollection, however, came with one issue, which was Loughlin later telling him it never happened. As such, Stamos claimed he remains uncertain about whether that moment ever actually took place or if it was just a figment of his imagination.
“I don’t know if it was something I made up in my mind,” Stamos further reflected, adding, “You know, some kind of fantasy.”

Uncle Jesse’s Honest Journey: John Stamos on Sobriety, Mental Health, and Getting Lean at 62

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Beloved actor John Stamos, best known to millions as the perpetually cool Uncle Jesse from the sitcom Full House, has become as open about his personal health battles as he is about his long-running career. At 62, the star’s health narrative is one of honest struggle, redemption, and a disciplined commitment to wellness, encompassing both mental and physical transformations.
Stamos has been notably vocal in recent years regarding his past struggles with addiction and the proactive steps he has taken to maintain a clean bill of health.
The Battle for Sobriety
The most critical issue Stamos has publicly addressed is his fight against alcoholism and substance abuse.
The star’s journey hit a widely reported low point in 2015 when he was arrested for a DUI (Driving Under the Influence). Stamos later confessed that the incident was a necessary “rock bottom” that forced him to confront his dependence.
- The Catalyst: Stamos revealed that his drinking escalated significantly following the death of his mother in 2014, compounded by the earlier passing of his father and a painful divorce.
- The Road to Recovery: Shortly after the DUI, Stamos entered a 30-day substance abuse program, where he successfully quit alcohol, as well as sleeping pills and antidepressants.
- The Result: Today, Stamos has been sober for many years, attributing his clarity and ability to be present as a husband and father to this life-altering decision.

Prioritizing Mental Health
Beyond the addiction, Stamos has been candid about his concurrent struggles with mental health issues, including depressive disorders and processing significant emotional traumas.
- Seeking Clarity: He acknowledged feeling a profound loss of identity, stating he “didn’t feel like me anymore” during his darkest times.
- Daily Wellness Routine: To manage his mental health, the actor has adopted a focused daily routine, which he humorously calls “mental flossing,” involving journaling and practicing gratitude.
The Physical Transformation at 60+

In his sixties, Stamos has dedicated himself to a dramatic physical overhaul, focusing on longevity and being an active father to his young son.
- Significant Weight Loss: Stamos reportedly lost over 25 pounds (approx. 11 kg), dropping from around 205 lbs to a leaner 178 lbs through consistent lifestyle adjustments.
- Diet and Fitness: His wellness plan includes adhering to a Mediterranean-inspired diet, strictly cutting out processed sugar, maintaining heavy hydration (drinking at least three liters of water daily), and engaging in EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) training three times a week.
- The Secret: Stamos emphasizes that his secret to staying youthful is not vanity, but rather consistency, clean eating, good sleep, and hydration.
A Focus on Others

While Stamos’s personal health remains robust in 2025, his recent public attention has shifted to supporting his close friend and former Full House co-star, Dave Coulier. Stamos has offered regular, encouraging updates on Coulier’s successful battle and treatment for Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, demonstrating his deep commitment to the well-being of his Full House family.
John Stamos’s story is a powerful reminder that behind the curtain of Hollywood fame, the fight for health and happiness requires courage, honesty, and continuous effort.

John Stamos Blasted His ‘Full House’ Co-Star’s Husband
Elsewhere on the podcast, Stamos also touched on Loughlin’s split from her husband of 28 years, Mossimo Giannulli, earlier this month.
He called his friend’s husband a “terrible narcissist” and also claimed he was to blame for their involvement in the college admission bribery scandal for their daughters, Isabella ‘Bella’ Rose, 27, and Olivia Jade Giannulli, 26.
“I’m just heartbroken for her right now,” Stamos reflected on Loughlin’s failed marriage. “I’ve really tried to be there for her during this time.”
“It’s heartbreaking,” he added. “She was married 27, 28 years. Her kids are good girls. She’s beautiful inside and out. But I told her, ‘Every bit of negativity or hardship you’ve been through has been connected to this guy.'”
John Stamos Says Mossimo Giannulli ‘Busted’ Lori Loughlin ‘Up To The Core’
Speaking further about Loughlin’s failed marriage, Stamos refused to answer questions about whether Giannulli was “supposedly not a very good guy” and may have cheated on Loughlin during their marriage.
“I’m taking the Fifth on that, but whatever he did busted her up to the core,” the actor shared.
“She put up with a lot over the years with this guy,” he added about his friend. “She is an angel, and she always made things better.”
Stamos went on to reveal that he has cut ties with Giannulli, regardless of the fashion designer being a “very successful dude.”
“When you have a wife like that and a family like that, how do you bust that up?” the actor blasted Giannulli.
The Actor Called Lori Loughlin A ‘Good Person’
Amid his friend’s struggles, Stamos has made an effort to be a steady source of support, with the full backing of his wife, who reportedly has no issue with their close bond.
“She lives in my neighborhood,” Stamos said about Loughlin. “Caitlin’s been good about it.”
He went on to praise his friend further, emphasizing that she’s a genuinely good person despite what some may think of her in light of the scandal.
“[She’s] a girl who, you know, has lived her life really well, a good person, a good mother, [and] a good wife,” he added about her.

John Stamos wants to tell you about the most famous crime you may have never heard of
Right off the bat John Stamos knows it’s surprising that he’s narrating a true crime podcast.
The “Big Shot” star who came to fame via “General Hospital” and “Full House” years ago (not that he has aged at all, trust us) told CNN recently, “I’m realizing it must look pretty weird.”
But not as weird as the subject of the podcast and how it all came together.
“The Grand Scheme: Snatching Sinatra” tells the story of the 1963 kidnapping of then 19-year-old Frank Sinatra Jr., the son of legendary crooner Frank Sinatra.
The 10 episode podcast premiered ad-free earlier this month on Wondery+ and is now available where ever podcasts are streamed.

Stamos told CNN he discovered the not very well known crime story courtesy of his own interest in music.
“Almost like 25 years ago, I was doing a gig at the Orange County Fair with [rock duo] Jan and Dean,” Stamos recalled. “I’d met them through the Beach Boys over the years. And Dean Torrence turned to me and said, ‘Hey, Stamos, do you know anything about producing?’ I told him yes, but I didn’t.”
“He goes, ‘Well, I have this manuscript. I have the rights to the story, my best friend kidnapped Frank Sinatra Jr.,’” Stamos added, holding up the manuscript. “I go “What?!’”
That led to Stamos forming a friendship with the author of the manuscript, Barry Keenan, who was one of the kidnappers and who wrote the manuscript while he was in prison.
Days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Keenan, then 23, and an accomplice grabbed Sinatra Jr., who was newly into his singing career and performing at Harrah’s Club Lodge in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
The kidnappers demanded a $240,000 ransom from the elder Sinatra and were eventually caught and prosecuted.
Stamos said he’s been trying to tell Keenan’s story for years, but ran into several obstacles – including the fact that Sinatra Jr., who died of cardiac arrest in 2016, did not want it told.
But Stamos couldn’t let it go, particularly because the story was so wacky.
He said Keenan proved to not be the most apt kidnapper, forgetting his guns as well as to pay his hotel bill and skiing in Lake Tahoe as everyone from the FBI to mob boss Sam Giancana was trying to locate Sinatra Jr. and his kidnappers.

“Everybody is after this guy and he’s doing runs down the bunny slope up there in Tahoe with his girlfriend. So you can’t make this up,” Stamos said. “And when I talk about it, like I usually say, it’s like the Marx brothers meets the Cohen brothers, but doing this podcast…we really got to dive into Barry and his story and his psyche and where he came from.”
What Stamos found was a mentally ill man who seemingly couldn’t catch a break, believed God told him through the radio to kidnap someone to earn some money, and concocted the scheme.
More than anything the actor said he wanted to shine a light on mental illness, which he said was swept under the rug when the now 81-year-old Keenan was growing up.
“I don’t want to glorify this man, what he did. He made a horrific mistake,” Stamos said. “Nobody got hurt. Thank God.”
He said he was already a casual fan of true crime podcasts and wouldn’t mind if “Grand Scheme” got additional seasons telling the stories of other unbelievable crimes.
Stamos also wouldn’t be against the story making its way to the screen someday and he said he would want to play John Irwin, Keenan’s mother’s boyfriend.
“He looked like Clark Gable, had a thin mustache,” Stamos said. “He was a tough guy and he was the one who made the ransom calls because he had a great voice and Barry asked him to do that. And that’s the character I would want to play.”
John Stamos doesn’t hold back when asked if he would bring Lori Loughlin ‘into the fold’ of his marriage
The ‘Full House’ actor also discussed his former co-star’s separation on a podcast, calling her ex Mossimo Giannulli a ‘narcissist’
When asked on a podcast this week if he would bring a newly single Lori Loughlin into his relationship with his wife, John Stamos had a definitive answer.
“Would you bring her into the fold?” the “Good Guys” podcast co-host Ben Soffer asked Stamos, adding that the top question they received from fans for him was whether he’d leave his wife, Caitlin McHugh, for Loughlin.
But Soffer said he and co-host Josh Peck would rather ask if he’d want Loughlin to join him and his wife in an unconventional relationship.
“Come on, Aunt Becky, bring her in. Bring her into the fold,” Soffer said some fans ask, referring to her character from “Full House.”

Stamos questioned if they meant a “threesome,” and they clarified it was more of a polyamory/open marriage question.
“No,” he answered. “I’m not Mormon.”
After that, they began to discuss the swinger lifestyle, and he said, in his opinion, “It never works” — except for a few sets of couples he knows.
Stamos went on to say that he and his wife are supporting Loughlin as she navigates her separation from her husband, Mossimo Giannulli.
Loughlin and Giannulli announced their separation earlier this month after nearly 28 years of marriage.
“She put up with a lot over the years with this guy,” he said.
“She is an angel, and she always made things better,” he shared, calling Giannulli a “narcissist” and adding that he’ll never speak to him again.

“I think when you have a wife like that, and a family, how do you do that? How do you bust that up?” he asked.
In “Full House,” Stamos and Loughlin played husband and wife — Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky. The popular sitcom ran from 1987 to 1995.
The 62-year-old said people always assume there was something romantic between him and Loughlin, but he emphasized they’ve always just been friends.
He admitted that he once called Loughlin the “one who got away” in an interview before he met McHugh.
“It was interesting,” he said. “There was a very small window for the two of us being single at the same time.”
The actor said he didn’t want to “belittle” his relationships down to the musical “Grease,” but compared Loughlin to Sandy before her transformation and ex-wife Rebecca Romijn to Sandy after.
He said at the time he was more attracted to “rebellious” women.

Stamos married former Victoria’s Secret model Rebecca Romijn from 1998 until their divorce in 2005.
“Lori was so sweet,” he admitted. “I loved working with her, but she was just too nice for me.”
He said that he even thought that he and Loughlin had made out on a ride at Disneyland once, but she denied to him that it happened.
“So, I don’t know if I made it up in my mind — you know, some kind of fantasy,” he laughed.
Stamos married McHugh in 2018. They have one son, a 7-year-old named Billy, who is Stamos’ only child.
John Stamos’ 7-year-old son, Billy, uses his father’s fame to impress girls

John Stamos has revealed that his seven-year-old son, Billy, has started using his father’s fame to woo girls.

The 62-year-old actor, who is known for his starring role as Jesse Katsopolis on “Full House” and later reprised the role in Netflix’s “Fuller House,” has revealed his son is name-dropping him to win over girls at his new school.
Stamos, who has Billy with wife Caitlin McHugh, told E! News, “He said, ‘Dad, we had to write down all our things.’ The girl next to him put ‘Fuller House.’”
Billy soon informed the girl of her dad’s role in the show, saying, “You know, that’s my dad. My dad’s on that show. And he plays Uncle Jesse.”
Stamos laughed, “He’s using it with the girls.”
“The Grandfathered” star went on to admit that his son likes to use catchphrases from the sitcom to “mock” his dad.
He told the outlet, “He watches ‘Full House,’ but he watches it to mock me. Because I’ll be like, ‘Go put your Legos away.’ He responded with Michelle Tanner’s (played by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) iconic line: “You got it, dude.”
Stamos quipped, “He’s pulling catchphrases on me. But mocking. Not like it’s cool or anything.”
John Stamos Has Fiery Response When Asked If Would Invite Lori Loughlin Into Caitlin McHugh Marriage

The topic of an open marriage came up during John Stamos‘ latest interview.
Earlier this week, the 62-year-old actor appeared on the Good Guys podcast hosted by Josh Peck and Ben Soffer where he fiercely defended his Full House co-star and longtime friend Lori Loughlin following news of her split from Mossimo Giannulli.
During their conversation, Ben asked John if he would consider inviting Lori into his marriage with Caitlin McHugh.
“No. No f–king way,” John answered before turning the question back at Ben.
“I’m not Mormon – do you do that with your wife?” John asked. “Are you a swinger?”
Ben, who is married to fellow podcast Claudia Oshry, responded, “I don’t.”
Shortly after that, John clarified that his relationship with Lori, 61, has always been “platonic.”
However, he did reveal that there’s a chance that they made out decades ago.
“I always thought that we made out on some ride at Disneyland – I’ve known her since the early ’80s,” John said, though Lori later told him that it never happened.
“I don’t know if it was something I made up in my mind,” John reflected. “You know, some kind of fantasy.”
Also in the interview, John didn’t hold back while slamming Lori‘s estranged husband Mossimo and blamed him entirely for the college admissions scandal.
