John Stamos, 62, Gets First Tattoo and Says the Bold Ink Is Symbolic of a ‘New Chapter’

The special piece has a nod to the Beach Boys

NEED TO KNOW

  • John Stamos shared that he got his first tattoo at age 62
  • The ink, an image of the “Appeal to the Great Spirit” statue, has a connection to the Beach Boys and symbolizes his “new chapter”
  • Stamos will soon release a new book about fatherhood and has a role in the next season of Hunting Wives

John Stamos is going to be permanently inspired after getting his “first” tattoo.

On Tuesday, March 17, the Full House alum posted a behind-the-scenes video of him getting inked for the first time at age 62.

For his first piece, which was done why artist Oscar Jordan Urbina and is located on his upper arm, Stamos decided on an image of the Cyrus Dallin statue, “Appeal to the Great Spirit.” The early-1900s artwork also inspired the logo for the Beach Boys’ own record label, Brother Records, established in 1966.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the work as a Native American Man on horseback communicating with a “divine power.” Stamos wrote that the image also represented the Beach Boys’ “artistic freedom and trust in a higher creative path.”

“Lately I’ve felt that same pull in my own life,” explained the actor. “Stepping into this new chapter of my career, taking bigger swings, following the work wherever it leads. The timing felt right, so I put that Great Spirit on my arm as a reminder to stay brave, stay open, and trust the direction the art is taking me.”

If many thought Stamos was already tatted up, that’s because he went viral in 2019 for pranking Nick Jonas by making him the singer think he got a large tattoo of his face on his body. The joke was a part of an ongoing prank war between the two stars.

This year, meanwhile, is about expansion for Stamos. Earlier this month, PEOPLE revealed the news of his forthcoming book, which holds “personal and often humorous reflections on modern masculinity, fatherhood and the lifelong process of growing up.” (A release date and title have yet to be revealed.)

What inspired the project was performing the song “When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)” with The Beach Boys, alongside his son, Billy, 7, who he shares with his wife, Caitlin McHugh. During the performance, Stamos looked back on the lessons his own father taught him, along with his hopes for “the kind of man he hopes his son will become.”

“I’m writing it as a dad who’s still learning, still asking questions and hoping that by talking honestly with other men about kindness, respect and courage, we can raise boys who grow up with both heart and backbone,” he said.

Stamos will also be featured in season 2 of The Hunting Wives, telling PEOPLE of the role, “I’m in this phase of my career where I’m really looking for challenging, different roles.” Calling the show something “darker” than what he’s typically known for, he added, “Like I said, I can get away with a little bit more than other actors, for a little while at least — until these things start coming out where it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s Stamos.’ “

John Stamos shocked his wife with Drag look

John Stamos “really freaked out” his wife with his dramatic appearance change in Drag.

The 62-year-old actor – who has seven-year-old son Billy with spouse Caitlin McHugh – sported dark contacts and thinner eyebrows for his role in the horror comedy and he had a great time stretching himself multiple ways with the project.#

He told People magazine: “It does become very dark in this movie. I watched a lot of true crime. And I really wanted to change my look.

“[The change to my eyes] really freaked my wife out.”

The Fuller House star jumped at the chance to star in the movie because he has always wanted to work with Danny DeVito, who has produced the film along with his children Lucy and Jake, and he hopes it has fostered a relationship with the 81-year-old Hollywood legend that will last some time.

He said: “I’ve always gravitated towards older gentlemen in my career and mentors. I hope that he becomes one, you know?

“I’ve been a Danny DeVito fan my whole life, and I’ve always wanted to just meet him and to get to work with him.”

John would have done anything for Danny – and didn’t even hesitate when the Twins star called him with an unusual request shortly before he went on stage with the Beach Boys.

He recalled: “I go, ‘What do you want?’ He goes, ‘I want to show your butt in the movie.’ I said, ‘OK.’ ”

Drag also stars Lucy DeVito, as well as Lizzy Caplan and Christine Ko, and a synopsis for the film explains it tells the story of two sisters whose robbery of a New York home “turns into a nightmare when one of them throws out her back and becomes immobilised on the second floor.”

The description added: “The night spirals out of control as they embark on a painful journey to make it out before the homeowner returns.”

John noted of the tricky plot: “I thought they did that really incredibly. And then watching Lucy and Danny and Jake work together was a beautiful experience.”

Meanwhile, after an appearance on The Hunting Wives, which John noted is a “pretty dark, wild show as well”, it seems he is taking his career in a new direction as he is keen to “stick with” similar projects.

He quipped: “Maybe no more Hallmark movies!”

John Stamos Takes Part in ‘What Were You Like in the ’90s?’ Social Media Trend with Nostalgic Uncle Jesse Photos

The trend sees people sharing a video of themselves now, contrasted with photos of them taken in the 1990s.

NEED TO KNOW

  • John Stamos is taking part in a throwback social media trend
  • In a new Instagram video, the Full House actor shared a video of himself now, contrasted with photos of himself then
  • The “What were you like in the ’90s” trend sees users sharing similar posts, all set to the Goo Goo Dolls song, “Iris”

John Stamos is taking part in the “What were you like in the ’90s?” trend currently sweeping social media.

In a video shared on his Instagram page recently, 62-year-old Stamos posted a video with the words, “Dad, what were you like in the 90s?” over top.

While the beginning of the video shows Stamos now, it then cuts to a montage of images of the actor in the 1990s — including some of him in Full House, him posing next to a motorcycle, and him carrying his then co-star, Lori Loughlin.

He captioned the video, simply, “Memories!”

Other social media users weighed in on the video in the comments, with one writing, “Every girl’s first crush, Uncle Jesse🤣🫶🏻”

Added another, “Have mercy!” a nod to his Full House character’s oft-repeated catchphrase.

Like other social media users, Stamos’ post is set to the Goo Goo Dolls song, “Iris.”

Other celebrities who have taken part in the trend include Drew Barrymore, Brooke Shields, and Kristin Davis.

Stamos played Uncle Jesse on Full House, which followed a recently widowed father who enlists his brother-in-law and childhood best friend to help him raise his three daughters.

He recently teamed up with fellow cast member Jodie Sweetin (who played Stephanie Tanner on the show) for another social media video, in which the two wore matching blue sweatsuits, and danced to Taylor Swift’s “Opalite.”

“If Uncle Jesse and Stephanie Tanner had social media today,” the text over top of the video read.

Wrote Stamos in the caption: “I’d follow them.”

Full House originally aired on ABC from 1986 to 1995.

While Stamos told PEOPLE back in 2022, during the show’s 35th anniversary, that he felt it was “time to move on” from Full House when it ended, he said he has since embraced the show’s legacy.

“When it ended, it was time to move on. I was trying to keep my distance from it,” he said. “And it just got bigger every year, bigger and bigger, and I realized, ‘Why am I running from this?’ I got to the point too where I’d done enough work that I felt I was able to do other things and prove myself as an actor. And so now I just absolutely love it. I just love it.”

John Stamos Issues Statement on ICE

John Stamos is known for keeping his public platform focused on family, gratitude, and career milestones. But on Monday, January 26, the actor made it clear that staying silent no longer felt possible.

In a handwritten message shared to his Instagram Stories, Stamos addressed what he described as deeply troubling actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, framing his post not as a political declaration, but as a response rooted in basic humanity.

“I usually stay out of politics. This doesn’t feel like that,” the note begins. “What I’m seeing from ICE feels cruel. I don’t need it explained away or reframed. I trust my own eyes!”

Stamos went on to explain why he believes the familiar criticism aimed at outspoken celebrities no longer applies in moments like this.

“When people are treated like threats instead of human beings, when fear is the tactic, something is broken,” he wrote. “‘Stay in your lane, actor’ doesn’t apply when basic humanity is IS the lane. This is ALL OF OUR LANE!”

Who Is John Stamos’ Wife? All About Caitlin McHugh

The statement arrives amid heightened national attention on immigration enforcement following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and U.S. citizen who was killed by a U.S. Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis. Federal officials have said Pretti approached officers with a firearm, while bystander video appears to show him holding a phone. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has said he has been in contact with the White House regarding the incident, which remains under investigation. This is the second ICE killing a civilian in Minneapolis in two weeks.

Without referencing the shooting directly, Stamos’ message focused on what he sees as a broader erosion of accountability and empathy.

“I’m tired of the hypocrisy, too. The speed of the cycle has erased shame,” he wrote. “Harm happens, outrage flashes, then we move on like nothing stuck. But it sticks. This doesn’t feel right, and staying quiet feels worse.”

The actor ended his message on a somber, cautionary note that quickly resonated across social media.

“Lately it feels like the bad guys are winning,” Stamos wrote. “Maybe the least we can do is not look away. – J.S.”

Stamos does not often comment on political issues. This time, his message focused less on ideology and more on personal discomfort, framing the moment as a question of basic humanity rather than partisanship.

As he made clear in his closing lines, for him, silence now feels like the greater risk.
