Meghan Markle’s unsuitable outfit on her Colombia trip with Prince Harry is very distracting

Meghan Markle was already a fashion icon before joining the Royal Family, and she continues to prove it time and again. To be honest, we’d need more than two hands to tally how many times the Duchess of Sussex has left us speechless with her breathtaking fashion moments, which seamlessly merge sophistication with flair.

However, Meghan has also worn ensembles that have completely scandalized the royals, and her most recent trip to Colombia with Prince Harry was no exception.

On August 15, 2024, Markle and Harry began their Colombian journey at the invitation of Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez. According to People, the couple aims to promote their own Archewell Foundation as well as their favorite issues, such as female empowerment.

Impressive work, without a sure, but one of Markle’s costumes stole the show. In one of the parties, the Duchess wore a navy blue Veronica Beard waistcoat set with a halter neckline and cigarette trousers, accessorized simply with studs, a tennis bracelet, and the renowned Cartier Love bangle. Classy? Yes. Controversial? Absolutely!

Some of her sharpest critics — or should we say fashion police? — claimed that the attire was distracting and completely improper for an official event. “Again showing the massive shoulders, next it will be the billboard back. Same old thing,”one X user remarked. Of course, no Meghan moment would be complete without someone bringing up Princess Diana and accusing her of “cosplaying” her late mother-in-law.

Some fans think she’s ‘cosplaying’ Princess Diana

Similar to the outrage over Meghan Markle’s allegedly unsuitable clothing during her trip to Nigeria, critics did not hold back in their displeasure with her fashion choices in Colombia. The waistcoat that highlighted her shoulders? Apparently, that was the worst fashion crime ever committed. Furthermore, others claim that she has brazenly copied Princess Diana’s look.

“Meghan Markle’s desperate attempt to cosplay Princess Diana is a sad parody, revealing her obsession with a legacy she’ll never live up to. It’s not homage; it’s a cringeworthy act of vanity, highlighting her relentless quest for attention,” one critic said, with another piling on, “She can dress up all she wants, she will never be a Diana. Diana had a warm personality, she wore the clothes, the clothes didn’t wear her. With M, the clothes wear her, and always hang on her poorly.”

But let’s give the duchess a break here. She has never claimed to be channeling Princess Diana, however several of her outfits do resemble the late royal’s classic appearances. But if she was, Princess Diana wouldn’t have cared.

After all, as Harry recently told the BBC, his mother and Markle would have been best friends, possibly sharing a closet. “Oh they’d be thick as thieves, without question, I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me,” he told E! News (via Twitter). “But then, as I said, would have probably been best friends — best friends with Meghan.”

Markle was born to Doria Ragland, an African American former television studio intern who later became a social worker and yoga instructor, and her husband, Thomas Markle, a lighting director who was white; the couple met on the set of the soap opera General Hospital. Markle’s parents divorced when she was a young child, but both remained active in her life. In 1995 she had an uncredited role in the sitcom Married…with Children, for which her father served as director of lighting and of photography. After graduating from Immaculate Heart High School, an all-girls Roman Catholic school, in 1999, Markle studied theatre and international studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois (B.A., 2003).

Markle then returned to Los Angeles to embark on an acting career. She quickly began landing guest roles in TV shows, including CSI: NY, 90210, CSI: Miami, and Fringe, and she supplemented her income working as a freelance calligrapher. Her big break came when she was cast as paralegal Rachel Zane in the popular USA Network legal drama series Suits (2011–19). Markle, who had briefly been married (2011–13) to producer Trevor Engelson, was introduced to Prince Harry by a mutual friend in 2016; Harry is the younger of the two sons of Prince Charles (later Charles III) and Princess Diana; his older brother is Prince William. An early date was a camping trip to Botswana. The tabloid press quickly discovered the relationship, and its coverage of the couple was seen by many as salacious and often insulting and racist. Late in 2016 Harry made the relationship public while berating the British press for its treatment of Markle. The couple’s engagement was announced in November 2017. The wedding took place at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018, and Meghan was given the title duchess of Sussex. Their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was born on May 6, 2019.

Though Meghan was often praised for her open and relaxed demeanour, the couple continued to be bedeviled by the tabloid press. In addition, a rift between Harry and Meghan and the other royals began to appear. In January 2020 the couple announced that they would retreat from their royal duties and planned to become financially independent of the royal family. It was later announced that they would, as of March 31, no longer be “working members” of the royal family. The couple subsequently relocated to Los Angeles, where they continued to support various charities. In addition, Meghan publicly discussed politics and personal subjects that were considered unsuitable topics for members of the royal family. Notably, in 2020 she revealed that she had experienced a miscarriage. On June 4, 2021, she gave birth to a daughter, Lilibet (“Lili”) Diana Mountbatten-Windsor; the name honoured both Harry’s mother and his grandmother Elizabeth II, whose nickname was Lilibet. Shortly thereafter Meghan released the children’s book The Bench, about a father-son relationship. In 2022 she began hosting the podcast Archetypes, which sought to “investigate the labels that try to hold women back.”

In September 2022 Elizabeth II died, and Meghan and Harry were prominent at various events, including the funeral. In addition, they made a joint appearance with William and his wife, Princess Catherine, at Windsor Castle, despite an alleged rift between the brothers. Later that year the highly anticipated docuseries Harry & Meghan aired on Netflix. A candid look at their relationship, it chronicled the couple’s courtship, marriage, and decision to step back from their royal duties. The docuseries also highlighted Harry and Meghan’s struggles with the news media.

A royal expert has accused Meghan Markle of “dropping” people she no longer needs. Angela Levin also said that Meghan and Prince Harry are at the “beginning of the end” of their professional partnership after Harry went on some solo engagements in New York, including projects involving some of his key charities, including the Diana Awards. The Duke of Sussex also made a surprise US TV appearance with Jimmy Fallon.

Levin told GB News that Harry and Meghan are facing a crisis amid their evident professional separation. The royal biographer questioned if Meghan has become “fed up” with Harry, telling host Nana Akua, “All of the conversations were very negative, he was very sad about a lot of things, saying we’ve got to change the world, but actually what he means, I think, is that he wants to change his own world.”

“So you have to work out why has this happened – was Meghan fed up with him to get rid of him for ten days? Are they really just going to divide their work? What actually is the reason?” she added.

Levin went on to predict the end of Harry and Meghan’s relationship. “My own feeling is that this is the beginning of the end. Because once she finds that she’s okay on her own, then she’s satisfied,” she said. “As we’ve seen throughout her life, she drops people when she no longer needs them, and I think that will be what happens around the corner.”

When Akua asked Levin if she believes Harry has “woken up” from his “haze of love” for Meghan, Levin said the Duke “needs her all of the time,” and is “controlled” by her. Levin said, “I think if he was very popular, he would be very positive with the way he talks about the charities. The thing that we saw that was very popular was when he was with Jimmy Fallon, taking on the haunted maze. There we saw the original Harry. He was laughing, he was enjoying himself, he was as happy as can be. He’s gone back to being a teenager and enjoying himself.”

Levin went on to claim that Harry’s first few engagements in New York revealed his “anxiety” and “nerves,” which suggested he needed his wife by his side. “What’s very interesting is that he was there by himself. He can’t do anything without Meghan – for the first few charities he was going to, he was incredibly anxious,” she said.

She added, “He was fiddling with his hands and adjusting his tie, and he was really nervous. That shows you that Meghan is controlling him so much, that he doesn’t know how to manage by himself.”
