Débora Rebeca Xi Artola, 15, died after accidentally coming into contact with the cables, according to local authorities
A Guatemalan teenager died after she accidentally came into contact with high-voltage cables and was subsequently decapitated by the current, according to multiple reports.
Débora Rebeca Xi Artola, 15, was on top of a building in the El Centro neighborhood of Alta Verapaz when her tragic death occurred, according to a Spanish-language news release shared by local fire officials.
The teen seemingly did not notice the wires around her and received an electric shock when she accidentally touched them, fire officials said.
Neighbors claimed a group of teens were practicing dance moves on the roof when Débora slipped and got caught in the cables, according to Spanish-language newspaper El Heraldo.
One clip of the incident, viewed by PEOPLE, seemingly showed the teens on the roof moments before Artola fell onto the power line.
The high-voltage cables sent electricity surging through Débora’s body, which led to her decapitation, per El Heraldo and Televisión Azteca.
Débora was pronounced dead at the scene, according to fire officials. She fell about six meters (nearly 20 feet) to the ground.

Andrea Xi, Débora’s mother, honored her daughter with multiple emotional posts on Facebook, including one with an image of the late teen at her quinceañera in March, according to The New York Post.
“I love you forever. My princess,” she wrote in one, adding in another that her daughter was her “first and great love.”
Erik Artola, one of Débora’s relatives, also paid tribute to the teen with a special TikTok video featuring clips from the young lady’s life. “You are in heaven but you deserved to be here longer,” he wrote atop the images.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started to assist Débora’s family in wake of the tragedy.
