Why Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Won’t Be ‘a Spectacle’: Source (Exclusive)

Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on Aug. 26 after two years of dating

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce may have shared their engagement news with the world, but their actual wedding won’t be a such a public affair.

A source tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue that the pop star and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end “want to keep it more private” when they tie the knot.

“It will definitely be a private affair and not a spectacle,” the source says. “They both have a close circle of friends, and they’ll respect their privacy.”

Swift and Kelce, both 35, announced their engagement on Instagram on Aug. 26 after two years of dating, sharing sweet photos from the proposal with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Kelce popped the question with an old mine brilliant cut diamond — a ring the source says Swift is “still showing off.”

“She’s incredibly happy,” the source adds. “It’s all just perfect.”

The engagement is the cherry on top of an exhilarating era for both Swift and Kelce, who recently kicked off his 13th NFL season with the Chiefs. Though the team dropped their season opener to the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5, they’re set for a Super Bowl rematch versus the Philadelphia Eagles in Kansas City on Sept. 14.

Swift, meanwhile, is gearing up for the highly anticipated Oct. 3 release of her forthcoming 12th album The Life of a Showgirl, which she worked on in between Eras Tour stops, she said on Kelce’s New Heights podcast.

“This album is about what was going on behind my scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant,” she said. “I’m so proud of it, and it just comes from the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life. That effervescence has come through on this record.”

As for wedding planning, the couple are taking things one step at a time. Kelce said on New Heights that he hasn’t thought for “one second” about a bachelor party, but promised that it’s “gonna go crazy” when they do get to wedding planning.

“That,” he said, “is the next step.”

Jason Kelce has his eyes on a particular role at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding!

During a teaser for his appearance on the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast on Tuesday, Sept. 2, Jason, 37, told hosts Taylor Lewan and Will Compton that he is “hoping” to be the best man at his brother, 35, and the pop superstar’s nuptials.

“Hopefully I’m the best man. We’ll see,” Jason said. “Trav has a lot of friends, I’m just hoping to get the opportunity.”

In the caption accompanying the teaser, the podcast shared that along with discussing his and Travis’ New Heights podcast and his journey as a NFL player in Philadelphia, Jason would also be opening up about “⁃Taylor Swift becoming a Kelce.”

Jason sharing his hopes about his role in the wedding comes after he broke his silence on Travis and Swift’s engagement news on the Aug. 27 episode of the brothers’ podcast.

“Gigantic piece of ‘New News’ that just hit the waves,” Jason shared during the episode, referencing a popular segment from the podcast. “We did record this podcast on Monday, which was Travis’ one day off. So, he is not here to address this himself, but we felt it necessary as a team here at New Heights to get together and send Travis and Taylor a giant congratulations for being engaged! The proposal heard ‘round the world.”

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and the “Love Story” singer announced their engagement in a joint post on Instagram on Aug. 26.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” Swift wrote in the caption of her post alongside several photos from their floral-filled garden proposal. The post was also set to her song “So High School,” which is seemingly about her romance with Travis.

Many of Swift’s famous friends have also since reacted to the news, including her BFF Selena Gomez and collaborator Sabrina Carpenter, whom Swift, 35, is teaming up with for the title track of her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl.

Gomez, 33, reshared Swift’s engagement photos on her Instagram Stories and captioned them, “When bestie gets engaged 🥰,” while Carpenter, 26, posted a series of white heart emojis alongside one of the couple’s loved-up photos from the announcement.

Following Swift’s record-breaking Aug. 13 appearance on the New Heights podcast, Jason praised the musician for how she described new fiancé Travis on the show.

“When she said you were a human exclamation point, I was like, ‘Goddamn.’ Like, she is f—ing good with words,” Jason said on the Aug. 27 episode. “That is such a great way to describe Travis Kelce. That might be better than Big Yeti, the human exclamation point,” Jason continued, referencing the nickname Travis was given at college thanks to his facial and body hair.

“That’s my new nickname for Travis Kelce. Stealing that one,” Jason added.
