First responders in Oregon are giving a dog a second chance at life after rescuing her from a dangerous situation.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, the City of Happy Valley confirmed in a release on Facebook that the Happy Valley Police Department and Clackamas Fire Department collaborated to help rescue the dog, whom they have named Sweetie and described as “truly a survivor,” from “a heavily vegetated water retention pond.
“Sweetie had wandered into an enclosed one-acre pond area filled with dense blackberry bushes, cattails, and waist-high water,” the release read, noting that Sweetie “kept fighting,” even though she was “scared, injured, cold and exhausted.”

With the help of a drone equipped with thermal imaging technology, the fire department found the scared dog “standing in nearly two feet of water, hidden in thick brush.”
Though Sweetie “evaded” several rescue attempts, first responders were able to save her and take her to VCA Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Clackamas. She was treated for “superficial wounds and exposure.”
In a Sunday, March 1 update, the City of Happy Valley confirmed that Sweetie was “surrounded by so much love and support from our incredible community” and had gotten a “clean bill of health” from the clinic.
After being released from the vet, she “enjoyed a little pampering with a spa day” before heading to the city’s office.
Since she isn’t licensed or microchipped, Sweetie is going to Clackamas County Dog Services, where she will be available for adoption within a few days.

“Our Director shared that she is incredibly sweet, loving, and will make a wonderful companion for a lucky family,” the release read.
While Sweetie’s past remains a mystery, the release noted, “One thing is certain — she is incredibly strong to have endured such difficult conditions.”
