Gracie Laney, Logan High School’s senior runner, had an unusual experience recently while competing at a track event in Utah. As she soared ahead of her opponents and glided down the final stretch alone, Gracie came across something unexpected – a cute four-legged friend! Track meets are typically full of exciting running and jumping events; however this one was made even more fun when Gracie encountered her furry companion on the course!
All she had to do is run steady and she would have no problem coming in first place for her team. A dog in the area, however, had other plans for Gracie. “I’d say probably about the 50-meters [mark], I could feel something coming on me, and I thought it was a person. I thought it was the runner,” Laney.
“And then I kind of realized that it was really small.” As she ran the second heat of the girls’ 4 x 200 relay event, suddenly, a small dog came speeding up behind her. Somehow, the pooch broke free from her owners and decided to try to catch Gracie.
Video footage shows the little dog named Holly, appear on a grassy area, run past two other participants, and catch up to Laney. Amazingly, Holly not only went neck in neck with the speedy Laney, but she wound up passing her off and coming in first place!
“After watching the video, I thought, ‘Holy cow, that dog is so fast,’” Laney. “So I thought it was kind of funny [that] I got beat by a dog.”
Laney was taken aback when she heard the crowd erupt in cheers as Holly approached her – she thought it was just a run-of-the mill audience reaction. Little did she know that they were actually cheering for Holly’s reunion with its rightful owner! Although Laney never discovered who owned the beloved pup, she is overjoyed knowing that it found its way home safely and securely.
She hopes one day to potentially meet up with Holly again and get a selfie together before saying farewell once more.
