Dahlia and her six siblings were found in a box on the side of the road in North Carolina. No one is sure where they came from or why they were abandoned, but luckily, they were found by the right people.
The puppies were taken in by Lenoir County SPCA. All of them were covered in fleas and had worms, and their rescuers made sure they got the care they needed as quickly as possible. Besides those few minor issues, all of the puppies appeared to be totally healthy and normal — except for Dahlia.
Dahlia’s rescuers noticed that she had some kind of injury or birth defect on one of her front paws. Thankfully, it didn’t seem to be causing her any pain. Dahlia got around just as well as the rest of her siblings and barely even noticed she had a special paw.

“She has got no clue she is different,” Tiffinie Jarman of Lenoir County SPCA told The Dodo. “Dahlia tussles, runs and romps just like the others.”
When Dahlia runs around, it’s easy to tell that her one paw isn’t like the rest of them. It’s also clear that it doesn’t stop her even a tiny bit.
“In fact, she already has a pressure wound on her ankle, which comes from consistently using it to walk and run,” Jarman said.
Dahlia’s rescuers are in the process of taking her to the vet to have her paw looked at to decide what the best course of action is. It’s possible it could need to be amputated if it might affect her quality of life long-term. Whatever happens, though, everyone is confident that Dahlia will continue to be herself and not let anything get in the way of living her best life.

The rest of Dahlia’s siblings will be available for adoption shortly. Dahlia will join them on that journey once her rescuers have figured out her paw and have determined she’s healthy, happy and ready for her forever home.
