Ellen DeGeneres — the comedian, television host, and cultural icon whose career has spanned decades — recently made headlines with what she described as the final chapter of her career in stand-up comedy.
During a performance in Santa Rosa, California, as part of her nationwide comedy tour Ellen’s Last Stand…
Up, DeGeneres delivered a message that surprised many fans: this tour will be her last major public performance, and she does not intend to pursue Broadway, movies, or other entertainment projects after it ends.
For decades, Ellen has been a household name — first as a stand-up comic in the 1980s and ’90s, then as a beloved talk show host for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired for 19 seasons and became one of the most popular daytime television programs in the United States. But in recent years, her public image and career path changed significantly.

The Announcement in Santa Rosa: The Final Performance Intent
At a show in Santa Rosa, an audience member asked Ellen whether she would be appearing again on Broadway, in movies, or in other major live entertainment projects after her current tour concluded. In response, Ellen was candid and unmistakable, saying: “Um, no. This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
She delivered the remarks with a mix of humor and straightforwardness, underscoring that she intended to step back from being a public performer once her final Netflix stand-up special — shot during this tour — is released.
When asked if she would reprise her beloved role as Dory from the Finding Nemo/ Finding Dory animated films, she reiterated that she would not be returning to film work, quipping, “No, I’m going bye-bye, remember.”
Tour Cancellations and Their Aftermath
Despite being billed as her farewell tour, Ellen’s Last Stand…Up did not go entirely as planned. Several scheduled shows were abruptly canceled mid-tour, including dates in Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago.
Ticketmaster notifications informed ticket holders that the events were canceled and that refunds would be issued, but no official reason was provided by the tour or by Ellen’s representatives at the time of the cancellations.
The abrupt cancellations sparked speculation among fans and the media about what might be behind them. Some commentators suggested that ticket sales challenges and changing public perception could be factors, while others connected the cancellations to the ongoing public conversation around Ellen’s reputation following past controversies.

Even so, as of the latest reporting, no official explanation from Ellen or her team has been publicly released regarding why the shows were canceled.
Addressing the “Mean” Allegations and Career Challenges
Ellen’s career trajectory underwent a major shift after allegations emerged in 2020 that The Ellen DeGeneres Show had fostered a toxic workplace environment.
A BuzzFeed News report cited multiple current and former employees describing intimidation, racism, and a hostile organizational culture behind the scenes — allegations that contradicted Ellen’s long-standing public persona of kindness and generosity.
In the years since those reports, Ellen’s public image has been a subject of intense discussion. During this farewell tour, she frequently addressed these issues in her comedy sets.
At times she used humor to deflect or reinterpret the narrative, including making light of being “kicked out of show business for being mean.”
At one show, she joked that at some point the industry might “kick her out for being old,” acknowledging the many interpretations of her career’s recent arc. But she was also clear about rejecting the notion that she is or was a mean person, telling audiences, “I am many things, but I am not mean.”
Netflix Special: A Final Performance on Screen
Part of Ellen’s decision to step away from stand-up and public performance centers around a new Netflix stand-up special being recorded during the tour. According to multiple reports, this special is intended to be her last major entertainment project and the capstone of her stand-up career.

In the special, tentatively titled Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, she dives into reflections on her life, her career highs and lows, and the controversies that shaped her later years in the spotlight.
Some portions of the special — as reported — tackle the allegations about her workplace and attempt to reclaim or contextualize her personal narrative.
There have been varied reactions from critics and former employees regarding the special’s content. Some former staffers say the material misses the mark or fails to fully address the experiences of those who worked behind the scenes, noting that a Netflix special does not equate to being “canceled” in the strictest sense.
Nevertheless, for Ellen and many of her longtime fans, the special represents both a conclusion and a chance to revisit her comedic voice in a way that feels personal and direct.
Context: The Long Road to This Moment
Ellen DeGeneres’ career is one of the most remarkable arcs in modern entertainment history. She began as a stand-up comic in the late 1980s and early 1990s, gaining attention for her observational humor and affable stage presence.

From there, she starred in her own sitcom (Ellen), made iconic cultural moments — including coming out publicly as a lesbian on national television — and became one of television’s most recognizable faces.
Her daytime talk show, which launched in 2003, dominated daytime ratings for almost two decades and became intertwined with American pop culture.
Yet the later part of her career was overshadowed by controversy. The 2020 explosive report about behind-the-scenes conditions on her talk show prompted an internal investigation, leadership changes, and a reevaluation of her public persona.
Ellen acknowledged the fallout publicly and apologized for any pain caused to staff, though she has maintained that some accounts were exaggerated.
In 2022, The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended after its 19th season. While Ellen framed the decision as a creative choice — saying she was ready for new challenges — the timing dovetailed with intense media scrutiny and shifting audience expectations.
Mixed Reactions from Fans and the Broader Public
The news of Ellen’s farewell tour and eventual exit from stand-up comedy has elicited a wide range of reactions:
Longtime fans have expressed gratitude for her decades of entertainment — from her stand-up early in her career to her talk show that brought joy and inspiration to millions.
Critics and some former colleagues have questioned the framing of her career’s final chapter, pointing out that controversies surrounding her talk show and workplace decisions remain part of her legacy.

Some media observers note that while Ellen’s tour has seen devoted attendance in certain cities, the cancellations of specific stops might reflect changing audience dynamics or logistical challenges that affect live comedy tours in the current entertainment landscape.
Despite the differences in opinion, there’s a common acknowledgment that Ellen’s influence on comedy, daytime television, and LGBTQ+ representation in media is significant and enduring.
What Comes Next for Ellen DeGeneres?
According to Ellen herself, once her Netflix special is released later in 2024, she intends to step out of the limelight of show business entirely — relinquishing tours, scripted roles, films, or Broadway ambitions.
In her own words to audiences: this moment marks the final time fans will see her in a performance setting.
Whether she chooses to pursue private passions, personal interests, or creative endeavors outside of public entertainment remains a personal matter, one she has not fully detailed beyond the broad declaration that, “after my Netflix special, I’m done.”
Conclusion: Celebrating a Complex, Influential Career
Ellen DeGeneres’ decision to end her stand-up career — and perhaps broader show-business presence — is a defining milestone in a career that has spanned comedy clubs, sitcoms, talk shows, Broadway legends of fans, and international fame.
From the laughter she brought to millions to the very public struggles and controversies she faced later in her career, Ellen’s journey reflects both the highs and the challenges that come with life in the entertainment industry.
As her final Netflix special approaches and her remaining tour dates continue, fans around the world are taking stock of a long, complex career — honoring the moments of joy she brought, grappling with the controversies she confronted, and recognizing the end of a remarkable era in contemporary comedy and television.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi ‘heading back to US’ after fleeing Trump’s America
The pair decided to settle in the UK the day after Trump was re-elected President, but they are now eyeing up spending more time in California, it has been claimed

Ellen DeGeneres and her wife are planning to spend more time in the U.S. after moving to England a year ago to flee the country over Donald Trump becoming president, according to reports.
A year ago DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi left America and bought a rural home in the Cotswolds. At the time they said they could not bare staying in the US over Donald Trump being re-elected.
The pair decided to settle in the U.K. the day after Trump was re-elected President. In the TV star’s first public appearance in the U.K. in July, DeGeneres told a crowd in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, that life “is just better” in the U.K.
The Mail on Sunday claimed that DeGeneres has told friends she and de Rossi intend to spend more time in California, where they previously lived for many years, because they “miss their friends'” and dread the thought of another British winter. The publication reported a source said, “Ellen was adamant that she and Portia were going to stay in the UK while Trump was in the White House, but evidently she’s changed her mind somewhat.
“She’s been telling friends they are coming home soon because they miss them and can’t take the winters over there, and Portia wants to act again. They will be here for the holidays and longer by the sound of it. Ellen was very clear that they’re coming back to California sooner rather than later. They miss the warm weather and their friends.”

De Generes, 67, and de Rossi, 52, a star of TV shows Ally McBeal and Arrested Development, first moved to Kitesbridge Farm in Swinbrook, Oxfordshire. They then sold the 43-acre estate in July for £22.5 million ($29 million).
After that, they decided to move into a hilltop mansion with land to keep horses on because de Rossi is a keen rider. Explaining their decision to move, DeGeneres, said, “When we decided to live here full time we knew that Portia couldn’t live without her horses. We needed a home that had a horse facility and pastures for them. The home also has plenty of space for their two puppies, Sport and Jinx, and their older dog, Kid.”
It appeared the pair had adapted well to country life, as they were seen on many outings at local pubs. .
Previously explaining her move to the U.K., DeGeneres said during an appearance at the Everyman theatre Cheltenham, “We got here [to the UK] the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in’. And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here’.” She also told how a reason she left is because she fears the “Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage.”

DeGeneres came out as a lesbian in 1997 in her hit sitcom Ellen. She went on to host her talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show which concluded in 2022 after claims were made that she bullied staff and that there was and a toxic on-set environment.
Before the show came off air, DeGeneres issued a written and on-air statement to staff over the allegations. She later claimed the scandal felt “misogynistic” and “too orchestrated, too coordinated.”
She also called the controversy as “devastating.” But in a 2024 Netflix special, For Your Approval, she quipped that she “‘got kicked out of show business for being mean.”
Ellen DeGeneres And Her Wife Reportedly Plan U.S. Return After Ditching The Country For The U.K.
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are reportedly considering a move back to the U.S. after they dumped the country for a new life in the U.K.
Some say the couple would only be staying for the holidays as they try to avoid the cold weather in the Cotswolds, but there are also reports that de Rossi wants to return to acting, so it remains to be seen how long they plan to be in the States.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have earlier liquidated their real estate portfolio, meaning they’ll either have to buy a new home for their stay or settle for a hotel or Airbnb.
Ellen DeGeneres To Move Back To The U.S. With Her Wife
DeGeneres and de Rossi are seemingly not comfortable with all the offerings of the British countryside, where they relocated to late last year.
The comedian and her wife moved to the U.K. partially to escape the political climate of the U.S. after Donald Trump emerged as the winner of the last election.
However, they are now reportedly packing their bags and plotting a return to the sunny shores of California as they look to evade the chilly Cotswolds winter.
According to the Daily Mail, they also made the decision because they “miss their friends” and are looking to reunite with them during the holiday season.
“Ellen was adamant that she and Portia were going to stay in the UK while Trump was in the White House, but evidently she’s changed her mind somewhat,” a source told the news outlet.
“She’s been telling friends they are coming home soon because they miss them and can’t take the winters over there, and Portia wants to act again. They will be here for the holidays and longer by the sound of it,” they continued.
The Power Couple’s Return Is Likely Temporary
Meanwhile, questions have been raised about the length of the couple’s impending stay in the country, as reports initially suggested they would never return, regardless of the circumstances.
At the time they moved to Britain, DeGeneres admitted that their decision was linked to Trump’s emergence as the winner of the elections, adding that life “is just better” in the U.K.
In fact, it appeared as if they would never make their way to the U.S. again after ditching their first home in Oxfordshire for a hilltop mansion with enough field for de Rossi to indulge herself and raise her horses.
“When we decided to live here full-time, we knew that Portia couldn’t live without her horses. We needed a home that had a horse facility and pastures for them,” DeGeneres said about their choice of home.
According to the Daily Mail, a source close to the TV presenter denied that their stay is permanent and confirmed that it would only be for the holidays. However, they refused to state just how long the visit would last.
“Ellen was very clear that they’re coming back to California sooner rather than later. They miss the warm weather and their friends,” the source added.
Ellen DeGeneres And Portia de Rossi Have Sold Off Their Homes
It remains to be seen where DeGeneres and de Rossi would call home during their stay in America. While they moved from the U.S., they decided to sell off all their real estate portfolio that remained in the U.S.
Earlier in January, the couple listed their Montecito five-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom property for $29.9 million. Later in March, they placed one of their last properties on the market for around $5 million, 4 years after buying it for $2.9 million.
According to real estate site Realtor.com, the mansion boasts 1,691 square feet of space and comes with its “own patio, spa-like bath, and generous closet space.”
It also featured a spacious yet simple kitchen with wooden cupboards and solid grey worktops with fitted appliances.
“A sound fence ensures privacy and serenity, while the spacious backyard offers room for a pool or guest house all within moments of the beach, Coral Casino, and Lower Village,” the listing added.
The Former Talk Show Host Was Embroiled In A Workplace Controversy
Long before her move to the U.K., the TV host was plagued with accusations that she fostered a toxic workplace environment on her hit talk show.
Others accused her of bullying workers and forcing them to work beyond their scheduled time.
She offered a written apology to staff at the time, but later said the whole scandal felt “misogynistic” and “too orchestrated, too coordinated.”
During her 2024 comedy show on Netflix, DeGeneres also talked about getting “kicked out of show business,” jokingly telling her audience, “There’s no mean people in show business.”
Ellen DeGeneres Was Slammed As Tone-Deaf
Many labeled her apology tone-deaf and came down on her for its lack of genuineness.
“Not only did Ellen turn my trauma, turn our traumas, into a joke, she somehow managed to make this about her,” a former employee told the Daily Mail.
“When she said: ‘Oh my summer was great,’ and that was supposed to be funny, I thought: ‘It’s funny that you had a rough summer because everyone was calling out all of the allegations of your toxic work environment and now you’re the one suffering?'” another said.
Others commended DeGeneres for addressing the situation, but called it an attempt to win back viewers.
