Turning 13 is something to celebrate — for both animals and humans alike.

For years, pet parents Nicolette Mason and Nina Kossoff joked about having a “Bark Mitzvah” for their dog Frankie. When they realized the milestone birthday was fast approaching, they thought, “Why not?”

Mason, 39, talks with PEOPLE exclusively about all the planning that went into throwing their pug the perfect party.

First, Mason and Kossoff, 34, had to pick a date that fell near Frankie’s 13th birthday, landing on Sept. 1, 2025. Then, they invited their friends to join them for a brunch in their backyard in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“We then worked on a loose program, looked up the Torah portion for that week, and wrote a dog-ified interpretation of the text,” Mason says.

“Then, we picked a theme — a popular tradition for a lot of Reform American Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Since Frankie is a New Yorker, we went with Frankie’s Delicatessen & Appetizing, as an homage to some of New York City’s iconic Jewish culinary institutions, like Russ & Daughters.”

They created designs featuring a deli-inspired logo and a portrait of Frankie that Mason drew, which they used to decorate their space and bring the theme to life, party favors and all. With the promise of brunch for their friends, they got fresh bagels and schmear, pastries and fruit.

“It ended up being the perfect balance of heartfelt cultural nods and lighthearted fun, and equal parts reverence and ridiculousness,” Mason says.

After all the guests arrived, their friend Joanna led a “brief ceremony” with Frankie front and center, which concluded with the hora.

“Frankie was lifted in her chair like the true queen that she is, and our friends were laughing, crying and chanting ‘mazel tov’ louder than we expected,” Mason shares. “We know Frankie loved being the focal point of the day.”

“We talked a lot with our friends about the necessity of creating and sharing little moments of joy, so we knew we had to lean all the way in with decor and Frankie’s Delicatessen & Appetizing theme – gift bags with Frankie’s merch and black and white cookies, and all.”

Mason recommends other dog owners host a “Bark Mitzvah” for their dogs as well, noting that “any gathering that brings joy and celebrates culture, tradition, or just the things (and pets!) we love is something we all need more of in our lives.”

“Pets are such a big part of so many of our families; they deserve to be celebrated, too. We’ve seen all kinds of celebrations for animals — from 100-day ceremonies to quinceañeras to sweet 16s — and all have been beautiful to witness,” Mason says.

For those looking to follow in Mason and Kossoff’s footsteps, their celebrations should include “good people, good food and good times!”

“There’s no one right way to do it — it’s really a ‘choose your own adventure’ kind of celebration,” she adds. “I’m really happy we could do something that honored our heritage, celebrated our senior dog, and brought our friends together for an afternoon of fun. Add some bagels and belly rubs and you’re basically guaranteed success.”

This isn’t the first time they celebrated their dogs, and they hope it’s not their last. Mason shares that they also celebrated Frankie’s 3rd birthday with a bang, and hope they can celebrate Frankie’s 16th in equally lavish fashion. They also hope to have another “Bark Mitzvah” for their 5-year-old rescue pug, Dorothy, when the time comes.

Mason shared snippets from the fun day on TikTok, and the video went viral, amassing over 356,000 views.

She says one of the most exciting things about their celebration was the online reaction, noting that she “definitely didn’t expect it to reach as far as it did — but the response has been overwhelmingly positive, happy and celebratory.”

“People really seemed to connect with the joy of it — and, of course, the sight of a pug being lifted during the hora doesn’t hurt,” she says. “So many people were also interested in the merch we made that we made the tees available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Pug Rescue of Korea and Muddy Paws Rescue in NYC.”

Part of the reason the celebration was also so successful — and viral — was due to a neighbor who posted their point of view, showing Frankie being celebrated in a crowd of people. The woman, Claire, posted the sweet clip on TikTok, which got over 1.6 million views.

“We hadn’t met this neighbor before, but a friend of mine in Chicago sent her video to me that afternoon, and we immediately connected over TikTok and invited Claire over to join us,” Mason shares. “It was really kismet, and such a good New York moment.”

“From there, we and our friends who were at the party started getting messages from their friends seeing the video on TikTok or otherwise – friends from different cities and states, friends we hadn’t heard from in years, it really went so far beyond what we could’ve imagined.”
