The Ring’ Star Daveigh Chase Left $400K Estate and No Will After Death at 35

The Ring’ Star Daveigh Chase Left 0K Estate and No Will After Death at 35

The “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Ring” actor’s mother is asking a probate court to name her the administrator of her daughter’s estate, according to documents obtained by NBC News.

Daveigh Chase left an estate valued at an estimated $400,000 when she died at 35, according to newly filed probate documents.

People reported that Chase died without a will, prompting her mother, Cathy Chase, to ask a Los Angeles court to appoint her administrator of the estate. The filing described the former child actress as unhoused at the time of her death.

Chase died in Los Angeles on June 16. Cathy submitted the probate petition on July 8, less than a month later.

Her Mother Has Asked to Administer the Estate

Probate documents obtained by People state that Cathy is seeking authority to administer the estate under California’s Independent Administration of Estates Act. She also requested approval for a $400,000 bond connected to the appointment.

The court has not yet granted the request. A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 12 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, where the petition and administration of Chase’s assets can be considered.

The filing identifies Chase as unmarried and without children. It lists Cathy and Chase’s father, John Schwallier, as her surviving parents, but it does not provide a final distribution order or establish how much any individual will ultimately receive.

The petition lists a Chatsworth, California, property as Chase’s last known address while also stating that she was unhoused when she died. Earlier reports said she experienced periods of homelessness during the years after her acting career slowed.

Chase Died Weeks Before the Probate Filing

Initial reports following Chase’s death cited meningitis, a blood infection and sepsis based on information provided by a man who identified himself as her boyfriend.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later listed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS, as the cause of death. Chronic polysubstance use was recorded as another significant condition, and the manner of death was ruled natural.

Chase’s mother previously said her daughter developed an addiction after receiving pain medication following a 2016 motorcycle accident. Cathy disputed claims that she had abandoned or expelled her daughter and said she repeatedly tried to locate her and arrange treatment.

She Was Known for Lilo and Samara

Chase began acting as a child and won the 2003 MTV Movie Award for best villain for her performance in The Ring.

She also voiced Chihiro in the English-language release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away and appeared as Rhonda Volmer across multiple seasons of Big Love.

After her death, original Lilo & Stitch directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois shared an illustrated tribute showing Stitch on a beach with Lilo’s doll Scrump and a sandwich for Pudge the fish.

‘The Ring’ star Daveigh Chase left behind substantial estate worth 6 figures

Daveigh Chase had $400,000 in personal property, yet was living on the streets of Downtown Los Angeles at the time of her death.

The late actress, who starred in 2002’s “The Ring” and voiced the character Lilo in Disney’s 2002 hit “Lilo & Stitch,” died last month at just 35 years old. Her mother, Cathy Chase, said the late actress left behind $400,000 in personal property in court docs obtained by Page Six Monday.

Cathy is asking the court to appoint her as the administrator of Daveigh’s estate.

According to the docs, Cathy believes Daveigh’s father, John Schwallier, “resides in the Philippines with an unknown address” but also “keeps properties” in Las Vegas.

Daveigh’s primary cause of death is listed as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner report obtained by Page Six last month.

Also listed is chronic polysubstance use, which is the use of more than one drug in a short period of time, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The former child star had no children and was never married. But her alleged boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, created a GoFundMe campaign to help her “find comfort and peace” in her final days before her death.

“Daveigh Chase, my girlfriend, has always been a light in my life. Many people know her as a talented childhood actor from ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ ‘Spirited Away,’ and ‘Donnie Darko.’ But behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship,” Hernandez shared in the online campaign.

Her primary causes of death are listed as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and chronic polysubstance use in the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner report. Daveigh is seen here in February 2012.

“After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA. When we met, I promised to protect her and give her the love and comfort she deserved. Together, we found moments of happiness and hope,” he wrote.

But Daveigh’s former manager, John Ryan, later urged fans not to donate to Hernandez’s GoFundMe after it went viral.

“Apparently, a man claiming to be her ‘boyfriend’ that none of us friends or her family has heard of has set up a GoFundMe on ‘her and her families behalf’ that he set her up as the organizer,” Ryan told The Post.

“I can confirm Daveigh has a trust account set up at SAG to cover all costs,” he added.

Ryan, who managed the late actress for more than a decade, also claimed she had “millions” in unclaimed residual checks at the time of her death.

Ryan told the outlet that he and her stepsister Gaia Brown had enlisted the help of a private investigator in 2025 to track her down and get her some help, but after he was able to speak to Daveigh on the phone, she “disappeared” again.

“We were so close to finding her,” he told The Post. “Daveigh was the sweetest and brightest light in Hollywood. I can’t believe this is real. Her legacy and work will live on forever.”
