NEED TO KNOW
- Gabrielle Taylor has been sharing her experiences as a mom of twins online
- When she was pregnant with her twins, she says there was one specific way the doctors managed to tell the twins apart
- After the babies were born, Taylor admits there was more that could’ve been done to make it easier to tell them apart easily
When Gabrielle Taylor walked into what she thought would be a routine ultrasound appointment, she never imagined it would lead to one of TikTok’s most talked-about moments.
“This is how they were able to tell our identical twins apart in the womb,” she captioned the now-viral video, which has drawn millions of views and sparked heartfelt conversations among parents everywhere.
“I feel like nobody talks about twin pregnancies and what to expect when you’re delivering them,” Taylor exclusively tells PEOPLE. “I started my TikTok page to show our everyday life with twins and a toddler and thought it would be fun to share some cool facts about twins, one being how to tell them apart in the womb.”

For Taylor, what began as a lighthearted behind-the-scenes moment turned into something much more meaningful. The response, she says, opened her eyes to just how many parents of multiples feel unseen and unprepared for the chaos that comes with it.
“I was so shocked at how many people related to it,” she explains, noting how few resources exist for parents like her. “I wish there were more resources for moms of multiples out there. There really isn’t anything — and that’s why it can be so overwhelming.”
In her TikTok, Taylor shares how doctors consistently identified her identical twins as “Twin A” and “Twin B” throughout pregnancy. “Every time I went for those sonograms, it was Twin A and Twin B,” she recalls in the video. “Twin A was always on the bottom and Twin B was always on top.”
It was a routine distinction that eventually became a source of both comfort and confusion. “They had very identical heartbeats, which is kind of crazy,” Taylor says in the clip. “When they would listen to the heartbeat, it would come out being literally the same — that’s where it got a little confusing, like, do we have the same baby? Did we switch babies?”
Taylor trusted her doctors, though, and leaned into the process. “I trusted the professionals,” she says, “and they always went with Twin A was on the bottom and Twin B was on the top.”

But before any of that, there was the shock of discovering she was expecting twins in the first place. “I was looking on the sonogram screen with the doctor confirming the pregnancy, and she said I might want to get my husband in here,” Taylor remembers. “I almost fainted because I saw what she saw — twins.”
Her husband joined her moments later, equally stunned by the sight of two tiny figures on the monitor. “My husband came in and looked at the screen and nearly dropped to the floor,” she says. “It didn’t even feel real — we were so shocked.”
“It honestly didn’t even set in until I physically had them in my arms and realized, ‘wow, there’s two of you,’ ” she continues.
During her pregnancy, Taylor began to notice how distinct each twin’s position felt. “They were explaining to me that baby ‘A’ is always closest to the cervix and baby ‘B’ is always further from the cervix,” she explains. “When I felt kicks in my lower belly, I knew it was baby A, and when I felt the kicking up top I knew it was baby B.”
It was an exciting time, but nothing could have prepared her for the delivery room confusion that followed. In the middle of her C-section, Taylor says, the process of telling the twins apart suddenly became a guessing game.
“I was expecting them to have hats that said ‘A’ or ‘B,’ but the nurses didn’t do that,” she recalls. “I wasn’t sure what baby I was looking at, especially being on all the medications from the C-section.”
“I mean, they are identical, so telling me you have baby ‘A’ but not labeling him is so confusing,” Taylor tells PEOPLE. “Looking back, we get emotional and so upset that we don’t know who was who.”
Amid the excitement and exhaustion, she and her husband tried their best to keep track. “We were already overwhelmed with two babies, so my husband and I just kept asking each other, ‘what baby do you have?’ with neither of us knowing,” she says.
Those first hours are now something they remember with both laughter and disbelief. “Now we make sure we put Lewis on the left for every picture since that’s the only way we can tell,” Taylor adds.
Still, she says she wishes the hospital had done more to make it easier for them to tell them apart easily. “Feedings were so stressful,” Taylor admits. “Looking back, we literally do not know who was who because there was nothing clear to label them.”

Despite the mix-ups, Taylor says the experience ultimately became a story that defines her family in the best way. “It’s been a blessing watching all three boys grow up together,” she tells PEOPLE. “At first, we were so scared to have three under 2, and now we can’t even imagine not having twins.”
Her faith, she says, has been a guiding force through it all. “God gave them to us for a reason,” she continues. “That’s because he knew we could handle the chaos.”
Even though the family never figured out which baby was which in those first photos, Taylor says that uncertainty has become part of their joy. “Unfortunately, we have not figured out which baby was which — that will be a family story forever,” she says.
On TikTok, her story continues to resonate as parents share their own chaotic, beautiful experiences of welcoming multiples. Taylor says she’s grateful to have sparked a conversation that she says is long overdue.
“I really wish there were more resources for moms of multiples out there,” she tells PEOPLE. “It can be so overwhelming — but it’s also the best kind of chaos there is.”
