They say it takes a village to raise a litter — or, in this case, one very large, very gentle roommate. In a video shared by @justgunnerstunner, we see Gunner, the XL American Bully, decide that Tokyo, the family’s little Dachshund, and her newborn babies were now his responsibility, too.
Before Tokyo’s puppies even opened their eyes, they already had him watching over them. From keeping the Doxie company during 3 a.m. feeds to letting the tiny pups crawl all over him, this “banned breed” proves he’s really just a wholesome dad in disguise.
Dachshund’s newborn babies treat Bully as their dad in video

With over 634K likes, this video of an XL Bully with Dachshund babies got a deep, collective “aww” on the internet — and it’s really not surprising. It opens with Tokyo curled protectively around one of her puppies, cleaning and fussing over them.
The text reads, “Our sausage dog has babies, she thought she’d be doing it all alone…” But then the video cuts to Gunner, standing just outside her enclosure, watching over her like a quiet sentinel. He’s letting her know she can always count on him to be around.
The next few clips show the Bully step into the role of dad and take it very seriously. He helps her “keep them clean,” aware of his giant size but careful all the same. He’s there during late-night feeds, lying beside Tokyo as she drifts to sleep, her newborns tucked safely next to her. The narration reads, “It’s like he knew she needed him.”
As the puppies grow, so does their fondness. One pup crawls toward Gunner’s bed, curling up on the edge of his blanket. Another nestles next to his arm like it’s the safest spot in the world. The clip ends with Aiko — the puppy they kept — resting against him in a patch of sunlight before they both doze off together. The emotional in-video text tells us, “To her, he isn’t just a friend… He’s her dad.”
Tokyo’s puppies sure have learned what love looks like, thanks to the “dad who stepped up.” And the comments section is just as heartwarming. One viewer wrote, “Not every man was meant to be a father, but Gunner most certainly was.” Another added, “Gunner’s heart is bigger than he is.”

Even if pet astrology isn’t usually your thing, thinking about dog and owner compatibility can be a great way to explore your pet personality match, which can come in handy seeing how there are so many cute dog breeds to choose from. So, whether you’re a Leo ready for a confident pup or a Pisces who craves snuggly companionship, discovering which adorable dog breeds matches your personality can make choosing a pet feel even more magical.
However, Dr. Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor for Embrace Pet Insurance, notes that there are other telling signs you should think about when deciding if a pretty dog breed is a good fit for your lifestyle too, like if you have kids in your home or if you live in an apartment. Still, it can be cool to think about whether the stars align for you and a pet, like a Dachshund. “While these factors are not included in a person’s Zodiac sign, it can be fun to consider whether a person’s star sign and their personality may make them a better fit for certain breeds of dogs over others,” Dr. Hunt points out.

Dachshund Personality Traits: What to Know
When it comes to personality traits, Dachshunds (AKA Wiener dogs) have it in spades. “Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshunds are a unique breed with their low, long bodies and strong front paws that are perfect for digging,” shares Dr. Victoria Carmella, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Pet Honesty. Their history contributes to their bold and confident personalities, which has earned them the reputation of having a big-dog attitude! It’s no surprise that they have grown in popularity in recent years. It’s hard to resist a Dachshund’s charm.”
Dr. Carmella also reports that Dachshunds thrive in homes that can provide them with enough daily exercise and mental stimulation. So, if that’s not you and not part of your Zodiac sign’s personality, you may not be right for one another.

5 Zodiac Signs That Bond Best With Dachshunds, Experts Say
Experts report that Dachshunds get starry-eyed over people with these five zodiac signs (or with similar personality traits).
1. Aries
Birthday: March 21 to April 19
Which Zodiac signs bond best with Dachshunds? Aries! Both Aries and Dachshunds are spirited kindred spirits. They’re lively, bold, fearless, a touch stubborn and open to new adventures. “Aries are known to bring enthusiasm and bold energy, which is a perfect match for a Dachshund’s spunky and confident personality,” Dr. Carmella says. “Their adventurous spirit will translate to plenty of activity and fun.”
That said, Dr. Hunt shares that an Aries and a Dachshund might be a bit too alike. “Perhaps the only problem with this match made in heaven may be that the two would feed off each other and then be uncontrollably spirited and fearless without a moderating factor,” Dr. Hunt states.
2. Leo
Birthday: July 23 to August 22
Leos are natural leaders who are known for their creativity, courage and generosity (like Aries, this Zodiac sign also has a stubborn streak, though). Those leadership qualities make the Leo one of the Zodiac signs that bond best with a Dachshund.
“The Leo’s expertise in leadership would be very helpful in training the Dachshund, who can be a bit stubborn and need some direction for training to be successful,” Dr. Carmella says. “The Leo may find that some of their own traits of courage and stubbornness may be well matched by the Dachshund—they definitely have some things in common.”
3. Scorpio
Birthday: October 24 to November 21
If you’re a Scorpio, the best dog for your zodiac is a Dachshund! Why? Our experts say Scorpios are intense, passionate, loyal and determined. And while they can be a touch guarded to the point of “mysterious,” a Dachshund can easily sniff out and appreciate this sign’s unwavering devotion.
“A Scorpio’s sense of loyalty won’t be lost on the Dachshund,” Dr. Hunt says. “A Dachshund bonds strongly with its owner or family and will no doubt appreciate that its loyalty is returned. Additionally, a Scorpio’s determination and passion will be helpful when directed toward a Dachshund.”
4. Gemini
Birthday: May 21 to June 21
Twinning? In some ways, yes, a Gemini and a Dachshund certainly share similar personality traits. So if you’re this star sign and looking to get a pet, a Wiener dog could be your pet soulmate!
“Known for their strong communication skills, Geminis and Dachshunds are both known to be social and friendly,” Dr. Carmella shares. “Both love interaction and engagement, so they undoubtedly will share a special connection.”
The extroverted personality isn’t the only thing that makes a Gemini one of the five Zodiac signs that bond best with Dachshunds. “Dachshunds are adaptable and versatile in many different environments, changing speeds or tasks without difficulty, so Gemini signs and Dachshunds are likely to be a great match,” Dr. Hunt adds.
5. Aquarius
Birthday: January 20 to February 18
As far as Zodiac signs and dogs go, an Aquarius is often independent, intellectual and unconventional. Wait, sorry—are we describing an Aquarius or a Dachshund, again? They are so similar!
“A Dachshund is among the most independent and bravest of dogs,” Dr. Hunt says. “Bred to be a badger hunter, they fought their battles alone. So, while a Dachshund is affectionate and loyal to its owner, they are also typically an independent dog, making them a good match for an independent Aquarius owner.”
