Coach Andy Reid Threatened To Give Travis Kelce The Boot

Kelce was involved in a heated standoff with coach Reid during the Kansas City Chiefs’ 22-9 win over the New York Giants on Sunday night.

The pair were seen losing their cool on the touchlines, although Reid was quick to downplay the clash during his post-game conference, insisting the now-viral moment is part of what’s obtainable in the “emotional” sport.

According to the Daily Mail, lip-reader Nicola Hickling shared the content of the heated argument, revealing that Reid made a brutal threat to Kelce’s place on the team after failing to catch a pass from Patrick Mahomes.

Just as Kelce walked over to him, Reid shouted in disgust: “Tell me why I shouldn’t kick you off!” before daringly bumping his chest into the tight end, saying, “How about that?”

Kelce responded: “It’s my ankle, I need to see doc about that. I could’ve saved that if it wasn’t for that.”

Kelce’s performance wasn’t so convincing as he finished the game with four of seven attempted catches for 26 yards.

At the time the incident with Reid happened in the second quarter, he’d managed just two catches for 4 yards as the Chiefs dug up their first win for the season.

Meanwhile, Reid brushed off the incident with Kelce, stating that he loves his passion.

“He’s a passionate guy and I love that part,” the 65-year-old football coach told reporters about the incident, per the Daily Mail. “I’ve been through a lot of things with him, that’s all part of it. I love that he loves to play the game; that’s what I love. And it’s an emotional game, so I’ll take it.”

According to the news outlet, Reid also addressed rumors about Kelce’s future and whether or not he’s comfortable on the team.

“The question came up yesterday about Travis and the intensity and all that. Is he frustrated or not frustrated? Well, he’s seen how the offense works, and so when things aren’t going the right way, he’s very aware of that,” Reid said.

He continued, “He’s a pretty smart guy, and he’s been doing it longer than anyone else on this team has been doing it. He wants to make sure he gets that point across to the guys, and so he does that. I’m OK with that part.”

The football coach added, “He knows also, like the coaches know, where we can go with this, too, and the growth we can have here. And we need to take care of business in that area.”

At the time, Kelce seemed displeased with his game as he was seen fuming on the sidelines. However, Mahomes took the fall for it, saying he threw the ball “a tad too early.”

“We got the defense that we wanted,” Mahomes said, per the New York Post. “We expected them to play that [Cover] zero, zero with the hole player, the safety. I just threw it a tad too early. Just trying to put it on his body low before that hole player got there. I think if I can put it more on his body, and not so far out in front of him, then he can catch it, take the hit, and get in the end zone.”

Shortly after the game, fans took to social media to slam Kelce for his attitude, with an X user saying he “needs to stop acting lame” and that he “has a strop when he cannot get his own way. Travis sucks.”

Kelce’s heated sideline exchange with Reid seemed reminiscent of the duo’s confrontation during Super Bowl LVIII.
