A dachshund has left internet viewers in stitches for what he did after receiving a birthday cake—once.
His owner, Leah (@leahmohmea), shared a video of the aftermath of what seemed like a well-celebrated birthday: the dog returned to the dining table and now demands another cake … every night. The clip has racked up more than 20,300 likes and over 93,300 views on TikTok.
“What’s the thing that your dog has never forgotten? I fear I may have caused ours,” Leah wrote as a text overlay.
“It’s been weeks since I fed my dachshund her birthday cake at the dining room table and now most nights she stands by the table and demands cake,” she added.
Dogs and Memory
Science tells us that dogs are more capable of remembering than we might assume.
Experts at PetMD say that dogs can engage in episodiclike memory—recalling an event that happened in the past, even if they weren’t consciously trying to remember it.
For example, experiments found that dogs trained to imitate a human action still remembered it 24 hours later.
However, it is not all straightforward. While canines can form strong memories around meaningful events, their short-term memory for arbitrary actions may last only a couple of minutes.
So, while our cake-loving dachshund may not recall everything, it is feasible that one special cake and a fixed table routine could become a memorable trigger.

Dog Birthday Cakes
If you are celebrating your pooch’s big day, there are plenty of cake recipes designed just for dogs. For instance, one recipe from Allrecipes uses ingredients such as egg, honey (optional), peanut butter, oil, vanilla, shredded carrots and whole-wheat flour.
These cakes differ from human birthday cakes: they avoid high sugar levels, certain frostings, and ingredients that could be harmful (such as xylitol in some peanut butters).
The Internet Reacts
TikTok users were quick to add their own stories of pets with memorable habits.
“Give that baby cake or I’m calling the ASPCA,” posted Kayla.
“Set our smoke alarm off while cooking dinner and now he shakes every time I’m in the kitchen,” shared one user.
“This is kinda embarrassing but every time my dog sees me putting deodorant on, she immediately starts chasing her tail because she thinks we’re going somewhere,” wrote another.
“I was wrapping gifts and the roll of wrapping paper rolled off the island onto the ground … not near my dog at the time. But 2 years later she runs by the island like she is in level 10 danger. Every time,” shared Denise.
“My dog once found a half eaten muffin on the sidewalk and would stop there every time for MONTHS, thinking muffins just sprouted out of the ground there,” added another user.
