Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce had a heated exchange on the sideline during the first half of Sunday night’s 22-9 win over the New York Giants.
As Kelce returned to the Chiefs bench following a series in the first half, broadcast cameras captured the star and his coach arguing. Reid bumped into Kelce during the exchange. The two continued to have a seemingly intense conversation as they walked down the sideline.
Reid was asked about the frustration of his star players at halftime and told NBC, “That’s OK, we need some juice, so that’s good.”
After leading the winless Giants 9-6 at halftime, the Chiefs opened the second half with a touchdown drive and held off New York, avoiding their first 0-3 start since Reid was hired in 2013. Kelce finished with four catches on seven targets for 26 yards.
Reid was more expansive about the incident after the game, telling reporters not to make too much of the sideline exchange.
“I mean, he’s a passionate guy and I love that part,” Reid said. “I’ve been through a lot of things with him, so that’s all part of it. I love that he loves to play the game, that’s what I love. And it’s an emotional game, so I’ll take it.”
Kelce was not available to speak with reporters after the game.
Reid elaborated on Kelce during his Monday video call with reporters.
“The question came up yesterday about Travis and the intensity and all that,” Reid said. “Is he frustrated or not frustrated? Well, he’s seen how the offense works, and so when things aren’t going the right way, he’s very aware of that. He’s a pretty smart guy, and he’s been doing it longer than anyone else on this team has been doing it. He wants to make sure he gets that point across to the guys, and so he does that. I’m OK with that part. He knows also, like the coaches know, where we can go with this, too, and the growth we can have here. And we need to take care of business in that area.”
This wasn’t the first time Kelce and Reid have made contact on the sideline. Kelce bumped into Reid while yelling during the Chiefs’ eventual Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers. Reid made light of the incident, joking that Kelce caught him off balance. He was joking again on Sunday night, quipping of Kelce, “Listen, he’s an emotional guy — he’s Irish.”
“I love Travis’ passion, so I’m OK with that,” Reid said. “We didn’t have enough of it that second quarter. It wasn’t where we needed to be. So within reason, you know — he knows. He knows when to back off the pedal and he knows when to push it, too. That’s the part I love about him. I mean, the guy’s all in. Just sometimes I have to be the policeman.”

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Head coach Dan Quinn said that Marcus Mariota will get the start.
“I said at the beginning we were going to be very diligent about his return to play and make sure we didn’t miss any steps. So we’re gonna be smart, not just fast,” Quinn said. “The player wants to do everything all the time, that’s who he is as a competitor, which is what I love, but that’s how we’ll roll.”
Daniels, who sprained his knee during a Thursday night loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, did practice in a limited fashion on Friday, but it was not enough for the team to want to play him. This will be the first game the second-year quarterback will miss in his young NFL career.
While Daniels didn’t miss a game in 2024, he was out for most of a Week 7 matchup against the Carolina Panthers with a rib injury, and he sat out the second half of the regular-season finale versus the Dallas Cowboys due to leg soreness. Mariota relieved Daniels both times and thrived under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, completing a combined 33-of-41 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns in a pair of Washington victories.
While Daniels said he was “good” after the 27-18 road loss to the Packers, his MRI indicated otherwise. He was sacked four times and hit another six times in the defeat.
Other notable Week 3 injuries:
-
Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft didn’t practice Friday after a knee scare Thursday, but he’s expected to play Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said on Friday that Kraft would be a game-time decision. “He has to feel comfortable and be cleared,” LaFleur said.
-
A toe injury kept San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy sidelined for Week 2, and, while Purdy appears to be progressing well, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that it’s “highly unlikely” the fourth-year signal-caller will start Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. That will be the case, as Purdy will reportedly not play in Week 3. Mac Jones is poised to make his second consecutive start in Purdy’s place. Jones threw three touchdowns during a 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints last time out. Purdy made encouraging progress throughout the week, however, and could return as early as Week 4.
-
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Emeka Egbuka is expected to play Sunday against the New York Jets, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, despite being listed as “questionable” with a hip/groin injury. The rookie wide receiver out of Ohio State is second on the Bucs with 96 receiving yards and leads the team with three touchdown catches.
-
Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been ruled out for Sunday night’s game with the New York Giants and will not travel with the team. Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder in Week 1 after colliding with tight end Travis Kelce.
-
Quarterback Justin Fields has already been ruled out for the New York Jets’ game against the Buccaneers after suffering a concussion in Week 2.
