Christian Brueckner, the man German authorities have identified as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, has made a bombshell confession.
Brueckner has never been charged over Madeleine’s disappearance and has previously denied having anything to do with the case.
Now, almost 20 years after Madeleine disappeared from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz, he has spoken publicly about his movements on the night she vanished.
The development comes as British investigators continue to pursue possible evidence against Brueckner, with reports suggesting the Metropolitan Police are considering whether there could eventually be a route to bringing him before a UK court.
Madeleine disappeared nearly 20 years ago
Madeleine McCann was three years old when she disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007.
She had been on holiday with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and her younger twin siblings.
That evening, the adults in the group went to a nearby restaurant while the children remained in their holiday apartments.
The parents used a system of checking on the children throughout the evening.
At around 10 pm, Kate McCann returned to the apartment and discovered that Madeleine was missing.
A huge search operation was launched almost immediately, with police, holidaymakers, local residents and volunteers searching the resort and surrounding area.
Madeleine’s disappearance quickly became an international story.
Her photograph was shared around the world as investigators attempted to establish what had happened to the little girl.
Despite years of searches and investigations across Portugal, Germany and the UK, Madeleine has never been found.
The case remains unsolved
Almost two decades later, there has still been no definitive answer about what happened to Madeleine.
The case has generated countless theories and attracted investigators from several countries.
The Metropolitan Police launched Operation Grange in 2011 to support the investigation, while German and Portuguese authorities have conducted their own inquiries.
Madeleine’s parents have continued to appeal for information and have repeatedly said they will never stop looking for answers.
Her disappearance remains officially treated by British police as a missing-person investigation, while German prosecutors have investigated the case as a suspected murder.
The fact that no body has ever been found has also meant that investigators have faced enormous difficulties in building a case.
Christian Brueckner became the prime suspect
Christian Brueckner was publicly identified by German authorities as a suspect in 2020.
He was living in the Algarve around the time Madeleine disappeared and had links to Praia da Luz.
German prosecutors have said they believe Madeleine is dead and have investigated Brueckner in connection with her suspected abduction and killing.
However, he has never been charged with any offence relating to Madeleine.
Brueckner has repeatedly denied involvement.
Investigators have previously examined his movements, telephone records, vehicles and connections to the area.
His yellow-and-white Volkswagen campervan also became an important part of the investigation because of reports that it had been seen around Praia da Luz.
German prosecutors have previously said they had evidence they considered significant, but securing enough forensic evidence to support a charge has remained a major challenge.
Police have continued looking for evidence
The investigation has continued despite the lack of charges.
In 2023, German and Portuguese investigators carried out a major search at the Barragem do Arade reservoir in the Algarve.
The location was around 30 miles from Praia da Luz and had previously been linked to Brueckner.
Investigators searched the area extensively, including sections around the reservoir, but the operation did not produce a public breakthrough that resulted in charges.
Further searches were carried out in Portugal in 2025, focusing on areas connected to Brueckner and the period when Madeleine disappeared.
The searches demonstrated that authorities had not abandoned the case, even after years without a prosecution.
Brueckner was released from prison last year
Brueckner was released from a German prison in September 2025 after serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.
That conviction was unrelated to Madeleine’s disappearance.
He had also faced other allegations and charges involving sexual offences, although he was acquitted of a number of separate charges in Germany.
Following his release, he was subject to restrictions including electronic monitoring and travel conditions.
His freedom has brought renewed attention to the Madeleine investigation, particularly because of his status as the main suspect.
Reports have also suggested that British police are examining whether sufficient evidence could eventually be assembled to bring proceedings against him in the UK.
The Independent reported earlier this year that the Metropolitan Police were seeking to build the strongest possible case, although there remain significant legal and evidential obstacles.
The Met is still pursuing possible evidence
The potential for a future UK prosecution has added another layer to the long-running investigation.
According to reporting cited by The Independent, a senior Scotland Yard source said that if evidence were strong enough to extradite the prime suspect and try him in Britain, that would be something the force would seek to do.
However, that remains conditional on investigators gathering sufficient evidence.
There are also legal complications surrounding the possibility of extraditing Brueckner from Germany.
For now, he remains a suspect rather than a defendant in the Madeleine case.
And throughout the investigation, Brueckner has maintained that he had nothing to do with the disappearance.
Christian Brueckner finally addresses his movements
Brueckner has now spoken about his movements on the night Madeleine vanished in an interview, according to The Independent.
It is the first time he has publicly given an account of where he says he was that evening.
Rather than claiming he was far away from Praia da Luz, Brueckner says he was actually close to the resort.
He claims he was on a beach nearby and says he had been involved in selling drugs.
He also described encountering police in the area as the search for Madeleine was beginning.
According to his account, officers stopped him several times as he attempted to leave the area.
Brueckner says his vehicle contained drugs at the time, but that police did not discover them.
He has presented this as an explanation for why he was trying to get away from the area that night — rather than anything connected to Madeleine.
Brueckner’s bombshell admission about the night Madeleine disappeared
In the interview, Brueckner admitted that he was around 150 yards from the resort when Madeleine disappeared.
He claimed he had been on a nearby beach selling drugs, saying he had travelled from Spain and brought cannabis into Portugal.
Brueckner also claimed that he was stopped by police several times in Praia da Luz as officers searched for Madeleine.
He said he became concerned about the police presence because his van allegedly contained drugs and that he was attempting to leave the area.
But despite admitting that he was so close to the resort on the night Madeleine vanished, Brueckner continued to deny any connection to the three-year-old’s disappearance.
He reportedly said: “I have nothing to do with the little girl’s disappearance.”
Brueckner also claimed he had previously avoided discussing his movements because he believed police were attempting to frame him for Madeleine’s disappearance.
His admission does not amount to a confession that he abducted Madeleine, and no charge has been brought against him in connection with her disappearance.
Instead, it provides Brueckner’s own account of why he says he was close to Praia da Luz that night, something that investigators will have to consider alongside the other evidence gathered during the nearly two-decade investigation.
For now, the central mystery remains unsolved: Madeleine has never been found, and Brueckner continues to deny that he had anything to do with what happened to her.
