A California grandmother underwent multiple surgeries, including a deep plane neck and facelift, after noticing the changes in her appearance from losing weight for health-related reasons
NEED TO KNOW
- Mae is a 70-year-old woman who underwent a dramatic plastic surgery transformation a few months ago
- The retiree experienced a life-threatening medical condition that empowered her to lose weight, which, in turn, changed the way she looked
- Following her weight loss, Mae decided to undergo an intense cosmetic surgery, including a facelift and neck lift, performed by Dr. Carl Truesdale
A 70-year-old woman lived her whole life thinking she wouldn’t get plastic surgery, until one eye-opening moment changed it all. In fact, Mae, who lives in California, tells PEOPLE she felt very “secure” with her signs of aging, including her all-natural gray hair.
Her outlook shifted after 2023, the year she “almost died” from a bilateral pulmonary embolism. The health scare pushed her to change her diet and exercise more frequently, which is how she lost over 50 lbs.
Within five months, she noticed that her appearance began to change because of the weight loss, and suddenly, her face was “just skin” — “then it just kept getting worse,” she adds.

Deep into her new wellness journey, Mae decided to look into cosmetic enhancements at 69. She did her research on YouTube and eventually consulted with around three surgeons before landing on Beverly Hills, Calif.-based plastic surgeon Dr. Carl Truesdale, whose video of Mae’s transformation has gone viral.
Despite not having undergone any cosmetic work prior, Mae went all in with a dramatic makeover. “I got basically the whole thing,” she says. Her operation included a deep plane neck lift, a facelift, a lip lift, upper and lower blepharoplasty, endoscopic eyebrow lift, fat transfer and CO2 laser resurfacing. All of it, she marvels, “took off 30 years” from her appearance
Like many who undergo plastic surgery for the first time, Mae was shocked by how much of an impact the intense nip and tuck had on her body. Her head became numb as did her ears (two months out from her surgery, she says she still couldn’t feel any sensation in the area). She also had to relearn how to smile because of the tweaks made to her mouth.
“It’s just been a process, and you just go through each little stage. I guess anybody who’s had a baby — you know how your body heals after that? It’s big stages, and you keep thinking, ‘Is it ever going to get back?’ “
Despite her virality online, Mae has only told one of her friends, in addition to her husband and six children, about her makeover. “I thought a lot more people would be more judgmental. That’s why I kept quiet.” But that hasn’t kept others in her close circle from noticing a little oomph to her look. She says one person went up to her and said, “Well, gee, babe, I don’t know what kind of surgery you had, but I want it.”

Mae is feeling more confident than ever before, thanks to her transformation. “My biggest thing was, I’d be driving down the street and think, oh, people are seeing my ‘turtle neck’ because that’s what it looked like. Now, I drive down the street and hold my head high.”
She has some ways to go until her results fully settle in. Still, everything in her life feels like it’s falling into place.
“I am enjoying myself,” says Mae, who is getting back into her active lifestyle with yoga and spending time with her grandkids.
Another transformation might be in her future. “I wouldn’t mind doing a mommy makeover,” she says. She doesn’t know how her body would react to the surgery, which typically involves a breast augmentation and tummy tuck, but moving forward, she hopes her outward appearance becomes a true reflection of how she feels inside. “I look great in clothes. I’m down to 107 lbs, and I feel really good and stronger.”
