Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, his spokesperson said Thursday, marking the latest health issue for the former president.
Spokesperson Kelly Scully confirmed the procedure to the Associated Press after Inside Edition aired footage on Thursday of Biden leaving a Delaware church with a visible scar on his forehead.
Why It Matters
Biden, 81, previously had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his chest two years ago while in office. In May, his office disclosed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. ”
Cancer has deeply affected the Biden family. His son Beau died of brain cancer in 2015, and First Lady Jill Biden has undergone procedures to remove cancerous lesions.

Cancer touches us all,” Biden wrote on social media at the time. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”
What To Know
Scully said Biden received Mohs surgery, a technique that removes layers of skin until no cancer is detected. The exact date of Biden’s surgery is not known.
After his prostate cancer announcement in May, Biden’s personal office said, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”
The news that Biden has been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer raised fresh questions about his White House’s transparency during his presidency.
Days following the announcement, President Trump shared a post which called Biden a “decrepit corpse.” The post also accused Democrats of stealing the 2020 election, pardoning “their friends,” and of using “an autopen to start wars”—the latter a reference to the accusation that Biden did not physically sign official documents, including pardons, and that the White House instead used an automated signature.
In June, Trump ordered an investigation into the Biden administrations alleged use of an autopen and alleged that Biden was not aware of presidential orders and appointments.
Biden has denied these allegations, calling them ridiculous and false.
Biden’s last years in office, and his re-election run in 2024, were marked by concerns over his age and mental acuity. Though he assured voters he was able to beat President Donald Trump and complete a second term in the White House, he later withdrew from the race and endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris.
In his first U.S. television interview since leaving office, Biden acknowledged in May that he bears some responsibility for Donald Trump‘s return to the White House.
President Donald Trump’s Health Concerns
Trump, who turned 79 in June, is the oldest person ever inaugurated as president and responded Tuesday to social media rumors and speculation about his own health.
Recent photos show bruises on Trump’s hands and swelling in his legs. The White House has said he was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which veins in the legs cannot effectively return blood to the heart, causing it to pool in the lower limbs.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt attributed the bruising to “frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin,” which Trump takes to lower his risk of heart attack and stroke, while doctors note easy bruising can result from age or medications like blood thinners.
